2 cards IS better than one, yes, but there is a huge misconception that is that 2 cards means twice the power, which is not true at all.

And SLI support for games is piss poor.
That's why I say buy one really good card instead of 2 cheap ones.
2 cheap ones will draw more power as well, not that it really matters, especially if your cooling system is all good, but if you're going SLI mode, you may aswell go double the best or near best like Ceano here with his 280's (how's crysis run btw )

for any of you to be sure about the good/bad SLI scaling _for your system_ you need to compare by running one card and comparing it to when you run both... or three... or four

Agree with you there. I notice the difference if I run any game with an SLI profile on a single GPU.

Well i don't have any problem with playing games with my 2 x BFG GTX280 1G OC card's in SLI, and to say that there is a lot of people that have problems with SLI due to the game forums is a poor statement...because you don't see all those that DON'T have any problems post there. Also to say that SLI support for games is crap is also a statement that is wrong, i have noticed a big game performance boost just from running my two cards vs one of them. I think people need to read and learn more before they make any statement's at all, there is a lot of tests made by people that rely knows what they are doing that shows that SLI gives you much better gaming performance then with a single card. And those test's is also made by actually playing games, not just benchmarks.

Benchmarks are the not the same as in game performance.

There can be a big difference....

I personally don't believe in SLI...I just buy the fastest card when I upgrade. ( My MB is SLI capable)

Most people I know with SLI are always complaining about actual in game performance.

3D 06 mark scores and thier ilk really don't mean much anymore..

It's in game performance that counts....

My two 8600GTSs get a benchmark test score of around the same as my mates 8800GT, though he runs the game fine at max setting (though I imagine the guad core and extra gig of RAM helps him too...)

lol, 8600GT, explains it all, just because you have two of the same card it doesn't mean your system will run twice as good, it's such a big misconception and a huge waste of money. Just buy one 8800GTX and you'll be fine...
But you'll also need to have a good system backing the card.

BTW, SLI support for games is crap as well, so thats why it's not worth the money, every game that has come out so far has had issues with SLI, and on those games and their forums I see the same complaints as this one.

Consider this education, don't go with SLI, invest in one big good card, not 2 cheap ones.

This probably won't help you but I am using a 9800 GX2 with the latest beta drivers. There is an SLI profile for Clear Sky in both the beta and the latest approved release. Performance isn't stellar but it does work and you do notice a difference if you turn off SLI.
