Determining cover

I'm writing a new combat AI for stalkers and found two peculiar functions:

level.low_cover_in_direction(lvid, dir_vector)
level.high_cover_in_direction(lvid, dir_vector)

I need to determine the amount of cover from the ground so the stalker will know if he should stand or crouch. However, the functions seem to return some strange values between 0-1 and I have no idea how to use those. Can someone please explain to me the functionality of those two?

Its to do with the AI maps I believe. Each node in CS and CoP has a high and a low value associated with it. I'm not exactly sure why, but I believe those 2 functions reference these ai map node values. It doesn't give any indication of these values in the SDK, so I don't know exactly how to use them.

I just don't get why there are 2 functions labeled "low" and "high". It could be made simpler by providing one function which returns the approximate hight of cover in 4 or 8 directions.

I would really like to know when to make NPCs stand or crouch.

As for me, I've been having a pause from stalker for a bit longer than I expected was needed. I reached a point when I was simply puking at the sight of CS menu background.

I was mostly busy with my work and family life during that time, with occasional rounds of Infestation aka WarZ.
Recently I felt the urge to go back to TFW and all I want to do, is throw most of functionality away.
