OK, Explain the CS Artifacts & Anomolies to me

I played STALKER SoC last year and loved it. Total fan boy here. I have CS now and obvisusly the artifacts and anomolies have changed a little.

I have been in the Swamps, COrdon and a little in the Garbage/Dark VAlley. I havent found a single artifact yet!

I upgraded my "detector" 2 times. I have the green digital one now (looks like weather RADAR sort of). I still cant find anything. Sure, I see the Anomalies, but where are the Artifacts? Are they literally INSIDE the Anomalies? Or nearby?

Im not complaining, I like how GSC made it more complex and harder. Reminds me of the original Roadside Picnic book.

I know this is a basic noob question, but Id appreciate a basic overview of whats going on in CS with Anomalies and Artifacts.

Thanks!

Artifacts can be found only INSIDE anomalies. Just try to find couple of anomalies (4 and more) close to each other and then i am sure you'll find your first artifact

Make sure you bring a few bandages and med kits with you as well. Artifact hunting is definitely a bit more of a contact sport this time through the zone.

to be more exact, they are actually next to them, if they would be exactly inside one then it would be suicidal, often you'll find them near by and can sometimes with caution approach them without taking any damage, altho getting fire, electricity and poison is just about impossible to reach without taking some kind of damage.

I meant that artifacts are inside of groups of anomalies. Sorry for misunderstanding

Ok, you see a large clusterfuck of anomalies (usually 1 or 2 types). Get yours bolts (6) and the detector (o) out. Approach said clusterfuck. You'll see a green dot on your detector screen where the artifact is in position to you (it's like another minimap, short range). As you carefully approach, the detector makes the artifact materialise (nice graphic and some noise to go along with that). Now carefully grab the thing and get the hell outta there before you die to whatever area of effect "curse" surrounds the anomaly field (psychic, radiation, chemical).

It's quite easy to retrieve artifacts from anomaly fields without being hurt by the anomalies themselves (which is an almighty clusterfuck on Master difficulty). Usually your detector will go off and you'll get all excited and head towards it. Bad idea. Spam the area with bolts (hold down right click and charge the little meter to get max distance) and try and map out the location of the anomalies. I circle around the area, just outside the initial 'danger zone' (the unavoidable toxic, rad or psi damage) tossing bolts towards the artifact until one lands safely. Most of the time the anomalies are arranged in a 'U' shape with an opening to reach the center where the artifact is. Electro and Fruit Punch anomaly fields tend to be huge pains in the ass, their area damage will flatten you real quick (fruit punch especially) without some decent protective gear, which is what your suit upgrades are for. The Fruit Punch and Electro fields tend to be much larger too, often requiring you to blaze a trail among them with your trusty bolts. Getting back out is the hard part, by this point the area damage will be burning a hole in you, which makes it hard to navigate (rad damage 'greyout' is troublesome, whilst severe psi damage leaves you close to blind for the next ten minutes), if you have a hard time seeing navigate by sound.

I've dug up quite a few anomalies around the place, now I just need to find a trader who will give me a fair price for them! Methinks I'll be doing artifact runs to Yantar again, the scientists bought artifacts for a small goldmine in SoC!

So I have to do more than simply pull out the meter? I have to activate it somehow with another key?

Can I have a pistol or bolts out too at the same time as the detector?

Im in the Swamps now with a pretty nice upgraded detecter (the one with the green 1/2 circle LCD panel - think I bought it in garbage. I looks like a RADAR screen etc).

Im actually in the section of the Swamps thats Northwest of the Base Camp. Its the exact area you are taken to in the beginning scripted part of the game when you see the 2nd "emmission" There is a tower, an old railroad car, and some dead Stalkers. Tons of anomolies clustered near each other but not luck finding an artifact. I even waded out into the water near that really cool anomaly thats warping the water into a concave "hole" in the water. Nothing but pain and damage from getting to close to the anomalies.

I dont think Im using the Detector properly.

I noticed I hear a beeping when I get close to the anomalies regardless if I have the Detector in my hand or not.

Im confused as to what beeps mean what. I hear the giger counter, I get warnings of poison, rads and toxins. Which device is warning me about what dangers?

Not all anomalies have artifacts. Just whip out you detector with O when near anomalies and listen for beeps and watch the LCD display. I think I know which one you have but I'm not sure. A dot will appear on the LCD and you walk and adjust so that the dot is near the center of where the four lines meet on the LCD. When the dot gets close to the center, look around for the artifact but be careful. as they tend to bring you right smack dab in the middle of anomalies. Keep in mind that the artifacts often roll around and you might not see it if you're standing still and the detector says its right under you or something.

And yeah you can hold either your pistol or a bolt while you have the detector out.

I had a bit of a struggle getting my first few artifacts and figuring out precisely how the detector works at first, but after a little prodding and experimenting i managed to get the hang of it.

First thing to do is pull out your detector ("o" key) as you're wandering around.
Second, look around for clusters of anomalies. Several in a group.
approach them cautiously, and listen to your detector. It beeps if theres anything nearby (around 20m) and it beeps faster the closer you get.
Take note of any ill effects in the area. Particularly radiation.
Just wander around the anomalies listening to the beeping. Slower beeps mean you're going the wrong way.
Get ready to use a medkit or two. You usually take damage getting an artifact.
Save your game (F5 is quicksave)
Prod the anomalies by throwing bolts and try to plan a fairly clear course into the center of the cluster.
Dash into the cluster with your detector still out, and when it gets within 5-10 m from the anomaly that contains the artifact, you will see it 'pop out' of said anomaly. Pick it up quick and retrace your steps back to safety. You'll probably die a few times at first so make sure you save before you go running into the area.
It takes a little practice, and it is rare that your detector will even beep, but have it out as much as possible. It'll suprise you.
Generally, the best places to look for artifacts are the places where the environment is the meanest. If it looks like a green glowing swamp filled with poisionous green gas, and anomalies, it's probably got an artifact in it. Your detector will always signal an artifact is near before you're actually taking damage from the environment.
at least as far as i can tell...
many radioactive areas killed me before i could fully check for artifacts, but i'll try them again once i have better rad protection.
Hope this helps.
