Which Version's Best?

I've been playing Clear Sky with a big mod, and it just so happens now - when playing this mod - I have been experiencing the wrath of TAGES.

If some people haven't heard of TAGES, it's a disk protection system that incorporates a disk check. And in terms of games, there are disk checks in MID game, leading to disappointing crashes because of pointless disk checks that trigger a game to stop sometimes when it thinks it's not detecting the disk. Unfortunately, GSC didn't have the courtesy to get rid of it OR make an update to get rid of it.

I found that there are three kinds of versions of obtaining Clear Sky: retail, download, and Steam. I am using the retail version, and I am definitely not getting Steam's of all places, but does the download type have TAGES with it?

I was able to make much longer playthroughs, but the game still crashed because of not detecting the disk in the disk drive. But it's a download! Why does it do that while I didn't need a disk to install it?!

I do have the retail version installed still, but the two different versions are in separate folders and directories.

If you have it bought already, I see nothing wrong in using a crack here.

I'm sorry, but what do you mean by "crack?"

Usually (see the word does not mean always) used in illegal torrents, a crack allows you to play a game without having its disc or having bought it.
This site has them for STALKER:

Again, if you have problems but have bought the game, I see NO problems in using it.

TAGES...

When I look at my game boxes, I don't remember a good moment from game, but TAGES... A more hideous way of treating customers will you rarely see...

Then again, like Charcharo mentioned: if you're an honest buyer, nobody will mind you using a No-DVD crack. Or simply buy it from GOG or Steam (whichever you prefer).

The problem is still not solved, the disc error is still occuring, even with a crack.

Could it be related to something else? Obviously, the disc isn't the problem if I'm using it without the disc. I'm almost sure that it couldn't be mod-related, which is why I posted this in the the mod section.

This disc problem all started when I installed the Road to Limansk mod. However, the previous versions of the mod never gave me this problem.

Been out of the mod scene for a while, but is it possible that the Road to Limansk mod ships with modified engine files? If so, the binaries might be from the retail version of the game, not the digitial.

Another possibility is that it is something in the mod related to a specific level(s). During my own mod development at one point, despite running a no cd crack, entering the dark valley kept giving me 'There is no cd in the cd drive' crashes'. Can't remembered how I resolved it, but I'm pretty sure it was 'redo level changes from scratch'
Might be worthwhile reporting it as a bug to the mod creators. Xray does funny things.
