Mod differences?

Hey all,

Thinking of going through CS. What are the differences and or your opinions on the following mods. Do they do the same thing? pros/cons?

1. Faction Fronts
2. Faction War
3. PreSky
---------------------
1. Spartan 11:11
2. The Warmongers

Each of them will have an entry in the 'Mod Downloads' section that will list all changes from the vanilla game, and usually an explanation of what the mod aims to accomplish.

I presume you have played CS before if not play without a mod first or at most one that only does visual improvements. If you have played before then really it is what do you want it to change, what do you want to try, There are quite a few available with a lot of differences mod to mod so like Steelyglint said read up the info post at the start of a mods thread life to see what each one does. It is also a wise move to look it up in discussions and check for stability issues, Theres nothing worse than getting many hours or days in just to find you wont be able to finish, Fortunately CS has been around a while and there are plenty of reliable mods available, But there are some mingers be careful. GSC is the best place for the good one so you did come to the right place. And finally if you are unsure post on that mods thread and ask. Feedback is what they need to help them improve there work, Have fun.

I think he wanted to hear people's opinions on the mods, rather than a features list. Anyway, here's my opinion on the ones I have played and know a bit about:

1. Faction Fronts: Ok, I haven't played this one that much, so to refrain from giving incorrect information, all I can say is that with this mod you can expect a nicely polished experience. Out of the mods I've used, this was one of the more stable ones. Oh, and some of the weapon textures (for upcoming updates I think) look very good.

2. *EDIT: a bunch of nonsense... so I removed it*

3. Faction commander 2.5.1: I know you didn't ask for this one, but It's a personal favourite of mine and provides a good point of comparison to Faction Wars mod. It makes faction wars customizable: you can set the magnitude and the difficulty of faction AI. The faction AI seems very intelligent at higher difficulty and will take control of all units, utilizing them to expand their borders/defeat enemies. They can even aid their allies. You can also command your own faction/spawn squads/etc. though you don't have to if you don't want to. Overall, faction wars is very fun with this mod. There is also a mode called "absolute faction wars" where you don't have a story, can join any faction (except mercenaries and renegades) and go anywhere. It focuses of factional warfare. The main issue with this mod is that it is VERY UNSTABLE (or at least that was my experience). The Faction Wars mod is much more stable and less buggy.

2. The Faction Wars mod: This mod improves on the faction wars (obviously) a lot. Overall, you can expect much more activity from the various factions of the zone, and that activity does seem more intelligent. Faction wars with this mod seems to flow much better. Be warned though: If you join a very powerful faction, travelling through the zone may become like a walk in the park. I joined duty and they - along with Defiance (aka loners) - exterminated any sort of hostile within garbage, cordon and agroprom (even mutants), so I pretty much had nothing exciting happen when going through these sectors.

I guess the main issue with this mod is an issue that vanilla faction wars suffers from as well; that factions seem to be very reluctant to expand out of their own territory. For example bandits would rarely send troops out of garbage; and even if they did, it was very infrequent. Though last I played this mod was a year ago, so smoq2 might ave fixed that by now.

Hey thanks for your opinion!

I think I will try Faction War and Spartan 11:11. I checked and Faction Fronts is due for a update so I will hold off till then. And Warmonger is not out yet.

For the record, there have been a gargantuan number of improvements in the last year to the mod. You should definitely play through it again, kyf. I don't think we had even added companions at that point, but I could be wrong xD

For me the best sandbox experience for factions war is "the faction wars" and best single player experience is Presky ...although fluffy22 has some problems with saving.

I haven't tried Spartan yet, waiting for the update and I have never tried faction fronts...I was under the imppression it was the same mod with faction wars....where can I find it?

HOLY ****! I just realised this:
Current TFW version: v3.0
The version I was talking about: v0.9 That more than a year ago wasn't it? Probably 2 years ago...

Sorry about that *facepalm*; I removed my opinion on TFW because it is waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy outdated.

Downloading v2.9.5 and 3.0 patch now...

EDIT: There's an outdated file (v0.9) at filefront. When I type "Total Factional Warfare" into Google, that's the first result I get. I actually remember checking it a few months back, and since there has been no update to the file I thought the mod was dead (back then I wasn't a member of GSC forums).

Arapisuk,

You can find Faction Fronts on moddb.com but they are working on a newer version atm.

Haha, ok I'll see if we can remove that old version from filefront... come to think of it, I'm not even sure how it got up there, cause I don't think we ever uploaded one to FF.
