I finally got CS running after years of playing STALKER SoC, CoP, CoC, and Lost Alpha.

This game is really good!

It is tough too: I spent at least 5 days in Swamps getting gear and weapons enough to get past Military at Cordon.

Stalkers getting down in the prone position to fire is really cool!

Tons of missions/tasks to do: I currently have about 10 "Collect your reward" tasks in my PDA.

In my opinion this game has the potential to be the best of the series, but I am only just starting.

We will see.

Clear Sky experiences

My first bloodsucker encounter was interesting- they don't go completely invisible but seem to be invulnerable to damage until they show themselves. I wasted a ton of ammo from a safe position on them.

I think I see why this game was not popular among Stalkers. It is very task heavy and if you just follow your PDA you will not experience much going on in the Zone.

You will stay busy though. Developer's intent I guess.

More experiences/observations

When fighting in a group: "Hey merc help us out!", other Stalkers will push me out from behind cover when moving around to take my position!

I ask everyone if I can help or do anything for them and the answer is always, "You can't.". Have I completed all missions?

Have you noticed the sun rises and sets from the same direction?

After joining the Loner faction, everyone still calls me Merc.

The Stalker guitarists have learned some new songs, and they sing!? I stopped and hung out around a campfire in Army Warehouses for several hours just listening.

Doesn't that happen in SoC too? Can't remember.

Could be. Also you must complete existing quests for that faction, IIRC. The fetch quests for the Clear Sky faction in the Swamps will regenerate though.

They do? You're not using a mod?

BTW, make sure to stand close to NPCs, their attempts to make you start talking are sometimes hilarious (especially the Bandits).

TM5000~

Each new level and with each new Faction you meet, you have unique
and individual "Quest" Items to find and deliver back to that person.
Sometimes they come from a specific person and sometimes they do
not but be careful not to take them from a person in a risky area ( like
a level changer or near enemy lines ) since their death will cancel the
task, whether you are searching for it or have found it and returning.

Another feature is each new level and with each new Faction you meet
there is a limited window of opportunity to buy activated stash locations.
This means you should not enter each new level broke. Save up enough
money to have at least 20,000-30,000 rubles when you leave a level and
go to a new one. Buy the activated stashes as soon as possible. Usually
from important NPCs like Nimble in the Marshes or various Squad Leaders.

Another thing to consider is the Faction option. You were forced to join
Clear Sky in the first level but once you leave you are back to being a
Mercenary. GSC gave Players the option to join any Faction. Most new
Players have a tendency in their first Game ( I did ) to join the Loner
Faction not realizing the implications. You automatically make the Bandits
your enemy by doing so ( or taking the hostile tasks against them by the
Cordon Loner Trader which I advise against doing any of those ) which
also means other things you don't find out until later. One of the most
important has to do with various Repair Techs only upgrade some of the
unique Armors or Weapons. The Bandit Repair Tech Limpid is the ONLY
one in the Game who does the 3rd Tier Upgrades on the SEVA suit which
is the best in the Game. However be aware joining the Loner, Freedom or
Duty Factions give you access to their Faction Exoskeletons. FYI the 2nd
best Armor in the Game was the CS-1 Armor that you could/should have
gotten from Clear Sky and fully upgraded to 60 BP. I recommend a CS-1
Stalker ( Sunrise ) suit combo. Upgrade the Stalker Suit to carry more
weight and switch to the CS-1 for Combat situations. Eventually you can
replace the Stalker suit with the SEVA and upgrade it for Environmental.
The 3rd Tier upgrades are either Environmental ( Anomalies & Weight
carrying ) or Combat ( Heavy Armor ) which should suit your needs.

Be aware of what all Faction relations entail. Join the Loners makes all the
Bandits your enemy. Join Freedom makes Duty your enemy. Join Duty makes
Freedom your enemy. It's really foolish ( IMHO ) as a MERCENARY to join ANY
Faction when you are on a mission to pursue Strelok and his gang. Being
a neutral Mercenary works best to access ALL areas, use ALL Repair Techs
and buy things from ALL Traders. Joining a Faction is something that you
can do in your 2nd, 3rd or more Games for replayability and experience.

Lastly another dynamic to be aware of ( and the least known and talked
about ) has to do with what I call Level Migration. In other words each
Level may be a certain way or be doing certain things based upon the
Player's actions but the Game is designed not to let the Player be aware
of this obviously. What does that mean? For example in the Cordon, the
Player upon arrival is given the PDA task to go talk to Sidorovich. Most
Players leave the Marshes and go straight to him unaware that the very
moment you do, the Level undergoes a mass migration of the NPCs and
Mutants changing from their original positions to kinetic or movement
positions. Find empty Military tents across the road from the Rookie
Village? Before talking to Sidorovich there are soldiers there. Likewise
the Car Park has NPCs you can encounter before the later scripted mission.
Garbage, the Dark Valley, the Agroprom, and the Army Warehouses where
you meet a new Faction all have Level Migration dynamics. In the Dark
Valley you talk to the Freedom Leader and he sends you to investigate
Freedom positions where you find everyone dead. If you visit these places
BEFORE talking to the Freedom Leader, you'll find them alive. Likewise
in the Army Warehouses, if you delay talking to the NPC you are prodded
by PDA to talk to when you first enter ( run pass him quickly ) you can
explore a Level that is quite different than AFTER talking to him. AFTER
talking to him you find the nearby Base full of Military. BEFORE talking
to him visiting it you will find it fully occupied by Zombies. Kill them and
you can amass a huge amount of 5.45 BP ammo. Wait and most are all
gone. These are only small examples of what each level may differ in.

Here's another example for you to compare and see how you did:

The Marshes level contains 60 activated stashes. Did you buy and find
them all? You only have 3 or 4 days to activate them all by killing the
Renegades and searching their bodies ( in addition to buying a dozen or
so from Nimble ) before they "deactivate" ( or become non-activatable so
to speak ) so time is limited. There were about 40 white capsules that
are out in the open to find for basic supplies. There were 5 Quest Items
to ask for, find the items and return them to their giver including a PDA,
an artifact and other stuff. Failure to give the Quest Giver the item they
ask for may result in no more Quest Tasks given by that Faction or Level.

Here's what I left the Marshes for the first time with:

Maybe deactivate was the wrong word. What I meant to say is for a very
limited time they are activatable. Wait too long they simply don't activate.
The Marshes level is the only one that I saw that behaved in this manner.

Not that I'm aware of. They activate in the first 3 to 4 days and after
that they don't anymore. Unless that changed with the 1.5.10 patch.
One thing that did change, with the 1.5.08 and earlier you had to kill
400+ Renegades to make Expert. 1.5.10 watered that down to 200.
You know how much I hate 1.5.10. It gimped the Faction Wars and
just nerfed so many little things. I think it was put out by a different
crew than all the previous patches as they screwed up prior hard work.

The "Complete" Mods are the worst abomination to come to the Modding
Community. They are so wrong in many ways in addition to making the
Games way too easy. It's like a Mod for children who need baby steps.
I would just add the SRP. Everyone seems to like it and it fixes things.

Egh I would not go so hard on Complete. It makes the game easier, but challenge wasnt really the point to STALKER and it isnt even that hard without it.

I would suggest using Clear Sky Reclamation though.

Tejas and Charcharo:

How does CS Complete affect gameplay?

Or are you referring to the "Wish Granter" function?

I downloaded it for the weather control, not for cheating

Also I found CS to be pretty tough at the start.

Bandages heal 10% HP, some modifiers to NPC actor spotting and stealth, slightly more supplies too.

Lesser Grenade spam, less powerful Cordon Machinegun. It isnt THAT much easier but it still adds up.

Reclamation ... it needs a menu for weather control for sure, for fun and screenshots. But its otherwise superior to Complete in all ways

In all the Stalker Games if you simply make a Manual Save and then
reload it, it almost always changes the weather to something different.

There is no Rostok East ( Bar ) or Rostok West ( Wild Territory ) in Clear Sky.
The excuse is that it is not safe to travel there due to shifting anomalies blocking
the way and therefore you don't get to go. In effect the Garbage "Flea Market"
has become the center of the Clear Sky Universe. Use the stashes there to store
your stuff as a base station. Further advice is to keep the Guide, Repair Tech
and the Day Trader & Night Trader alive there. Do NOT do the jobs that Wild Napr
offers if you are a Mercenary and you are trying to keep the Bandits friendly/neutral.

Flea Market operating hours:

Night Trader hours: 2300-0300 ( 11pm to 3am )
Repair Tech hours: 2100-0500 ( 9pm to 5am )
Guide: sometimes leaves 2nd floor position to
join evening party around bonfire on the 1st floor.
Party usually breaks up at 3am and then he returns.

Three Mile Island~

True but if you stay neutral, the Bandit Base can be under constant attack
by Loners and later Duty & Freedom. This means that the important NPCs
disappear every time for their safety. Plus the Bandit Trader pays very badly
for selling items and his inventory isn't that great either. However it is a
good Base to hang out at and generally has plenty of protective qualities.

* * * * *

TM5000~

One more important word of warning. Even if you do make the Bandits
neutral/friendly, you still have to exercise extreme caution when you get
near any Bandits controlling checkpoints. They will still try to rob you or
go hostile if you try to get past their guarding the level changers. Even
if you attempt to take a job from them successfully, they can still become
hostile if you approach them for your reward. For these reasons, avoid
the Bandits at level changers including the Concentration Camp Bandits
at the Vehicle Junkyard ( at first ) until you make all Bandits green, then
you can visit safely if you approach from the north and not the sides. One
way to get past the Bandits at level changers is to wait for an emission and
then when they leave their post for safety, run past them to go elsewhere.

Or sometimes they get killed instead of disappearing. But attacks are not that common, IIRC.

But the Bandit Bartender pays OK for food and vodka, and the Bandit Technician pays very well for Flash drives. And since the Flea Market Traders only have limited funds, you can't sell a lot to them anyway. I've sometimes traded surplus ammo for vodka at the Flea Market and then sold the vodka to the Bandit Bartender (like a real Garbage scavenger). But eventually Flea Market runs out of both funds and vodka this way.

I just run past them in most places. They might fire a few rounds after you and make you lose a slight amount of Friendship, but if you're in a hurry you have no choice. On the other hand, if you cross a level during an emission you'll be in a hurry to find protection on the next level, which adds extra challenge.

Yes, the important NPCs will try to flee the area and can be killed.
When I was against the Bandits, it was my goal to kill Yoga, Borov
and the others when an attack commenced and they sprinted out.

All the Bartenders pay well for vodka, food and related items. Why
GSC decided to eliminate hunger and have all these useless items is
beyond me. They generate decent money if sold to the right people.

While the Day & Night Traders have limited funds to buy things, this
can be overcome by buying things from them like rare ammo and then
stashing it nearby. After all, there's no benefit to amassing a lot of money
and then leaving the Dark Valley and getting mugged and losing it all. For
this reason spend the money to buy stuff from them that can be used later.

I have also sprinted past the Bandit checkpoints to leave a level. I did
this at the LC going to the Agroprom and the Bandits there can go hostile
and you lose half a bar of relationship. That means if you have them green
then they drop to yellow and you have to earn your way back to friendly.

Problem is they don't sell anything you need, IIRC. I agree it's best to not carry cash in Garbage, I usually spend it on upgrading my equipment.

It's also possible at the East Cordon and the Red Forest(?) level changers, perhaps others too that I can't remember. The local NPCs at the level changer do become hostile, but they'll usually die anyway eventually. The loss of total Faction reputation can usually be fixed easily. An exception might be if you want to make the Renegades friendly/neutral, then every extra bit of Bandit friendship may help.

I've found that this Bandit checkpoint can be bypassed without pissing off the natives by traveling along the very edge of walkable terrain over the tunnel leading to Agroprom. Through this a safe route between the Garbage and the Cordon can be found as well, albeit a circuitous one.

I just got the 'collect the loot' mission from Major Khaletsky.

Bandits are completely neutral faction yet they open fire as soon as they see me.

Why is this? There are no bars in either direction for their faction on my PDA.

I have had no interactions with them, as far as I know.

No. They are across the road from the loner camp in Cordon in the house where you first meet Sin in Lost Alpha.

I have not joined any factions this time and have tried approaching slowly and unarmed but they still open fire.

Unrelated comments: the lack of Rostok and Wild Territory is very disappointing. I am already looking forward to playing LA or CoC again. They have spoiled me with their open world/sandbox environment.

How does Stalker soup compare? I have yet to play that one.

Don't take any jobs against the Bandits in the Cordon before Garbage.
This is how Players get tricked into automatically assuming that the
Bandits are your enemy like in SoC. Likewise don't leave the Cordon
and enter Garbage until you see the Loners have control of the level
changer on the other side. Otherwise the Bandits there will attack or
rob you. Wait until it is safe and avoid approaching the Concentration
Camp at the Vehicle Scrapyard totally until you get the entire Bandit
Faction green. AFTER that you can enter it from the northern side.

Ok I'm going back to a previous save before getting the mission.

I don't recall him saying I would tangle with Bandits but I will double check that.

I also gave him the pistol he asked for but haven't seen him use it yet.

My intention was to improve my standing with Miltary but I see they are not on the faction list. Neither is Monolith. I suppose their hostility is a given.

As you well know you can play Clear Sky any way that you want to.
By no means am I telling you there is only one way or my way to do so.
That's what I like about the GSC Forums unlike other places, like Reddit
for example, where people get easily offended at everything including the
implication that when someone is giving advice that it must be done in
the manner that is suggested. This is only my experience and advice:

No. They are across the road from the loner camp in Cordon in the house where you first meet Sin in Lost Alpha.

I have not joined any factions this time and have tried approaching slowly and unarmed but they still open fire.

---END QUOTATION---

That particular group of Bandits starts out hostile regardless of your actions. You can sneak into the building and enter the attic without being seen via the door on the side opposite the road, though. If you leave them be they'll eventually move on and be killed fighting Stalkers or mutants in the area.

There are some other hostile Bandit groups that you'll meet later on regardless of your relationship with the faction. Killing the members of those groups will lower your overall standing with the faction, but so long as you don't kill enough to turn the entire faction hostile (or complete missions that turn them against you) you can always win the faction at-large back by doing odd jobs and saving the asses of the friendly/neutral ones from incoming mutant attacks.

No offense taken here Tejas.

I just wanted clarification on the mission, which was 'Collect the Loot', not 'Take the Loot from the Bandits'.

So when approaching the area and taking fire from Bandits, my usual response would be to return fire and take them out, but I want to be everyone's friend this game.

So I used a previous save and took MaxChill's advice about sneaking into the house from the north side.

When I grabbed the case, the Bandits started shooting and I thought they had seen me. It was actually a group of wild boars that killed all 5 of them!

Win!

Back to the Swamps to schmooze with Clear Sky some more.

Nice. One thing you can count on in the Cordon is that any non-military NPC who doesn't disappear when danger is near (e.g. traders, repair techs, and Valerian) will be killed by mutants or enemy NPCs before long.

If you'd like to make some easy money (by my standards, anyway) at this stage in the game, kill the military at the base and then take their weapons and sell them to Suslov at the CS base. The military AI is highly exploitable due to their propensity toward prioritizing the camp jobs at the road entrance of the base, and there's no reason to worry about relation with military in the game.

Yes, there will be hostile Bandits regardless of what you do. These
are usually spawned related to tasks that become available later once
they are in place. You may see these in the Cordon north of the Loner
Base or across the street at the Farmhouse too. These are related to
tasks given by the Loner Trader that I said to previously NOT take.

There are some possible other locations some may be but it is best to
avoid them if possible and let other men and mutants do your dirty work.
Likewise in Garbage, the level changer Bandits, the Salvage Yard Bandits
and others are hostile and that is why you avoid them and improve your
relations. Once the regular Bandits go to "green", the hostile Bandits
will go from "red" to yellow". Even the Bandits that mug you after
coming back from the Dark Valley will appear "yellow" once you
catch up with them to get your gear back ( but not your $ )
if you make the overall Bandit Faction friendly "green".

Maybe the quest giver got killed? Can't remember if fetch quests are flagged as failed then. The trick is to return an item before the NPC gets killed, and then follow them so you can loot the item back once they're dead.

That might have been possible in the original design, but it was later cut from the game. You can still find code remains, such as a non-hostile Military NPC greeting you East of the Rookie Village early in the game. You can also somewhat help Khaletsky's driver.

Do NOT do the jobs that Wild Napr offers if you are a Mercenary and you are trying to keep the Bandits friendly/neutral.

The series of jobs which starts with 'find info on Fang from the diggers' (or something like it), then continues to a Dark Valley entrance, where I was to help a Stalker fight off dogs.

He died in the fight, then I got a new mission and a PDA message attributing it to Wild Napr.

Have I gone too far at this point? I still want to avoid hostilities with the Bandits, but had no option to decline the mission.

TM5000~

You need to finish the Game at least once before you try all the
wonderful exploits that are listed in Three Mile Island's signature.

No, that mission is part of the main story thread. Wild Napr can give you some missions through a dialogue choice that begin with finding a PDA that holds coordinates to a weapon cache and ends with a group of Stalkers freeing their captured friends from the Concentration Camp. Once the guards are killed and the Stalkers are freed the Bandits all automatically turn hostile no matter what, I once even had other Stalkers complete it for me when I wasn't near the camp and the Bandits still turned to instant enemies despite having a mostly full positive relation bar just before. If you simply avoid doing those you should mostly be fine with the Bandits.

Later on in Agroprom you'll encounter some missions that can lower your status with the Bandits as well, but as long as you don't let the relation bar dip into enemy levels you can raise it again by helping them out around the Garbage.

It's a good point actually: if you're too thorough the first time it feels more like a chore, and there will be less to discover later.

Back to playing CS after being out of town for a few weeks.

Saw the 'Collect your reward' for Hound was 50K ru and a FN2000, so I hoofed it to Swamps.

Went to the technician to see about upgrades for the new rifle and got the 'Are you sure you want to change locations?' window halfway up the stairs.

What the heck, I thought- and ended up at the flea market.

Another transition in the flea market sends me to the Loner camp in Cordon.

Still enjoying it.

I'd suggest to play Clear Sky with SRP addon, much much better expereince.
Lots of crashes fixed and bugs(storyline, side-quests etc.) optimized and minor fixes also

That reward is certainly not part of the vanilla game, it's much too big and will spoil the player.

Sounds like a mod bug. I've never experienced anything like that in vanilla (except once in my first unpatched game, where I was somehow sent from Red Forest directly to Limansk and missed all the gameplay in between).

Through Limansk

Scouted the route through Limansk and that was brutal!

My armor is shot and I have very little ammo, and we go straight into the deserted hospital?

I have an RPG and 1 round left. Saving it for the machine gunner.

Another thing: when fighting in deserted hospital, the light background would cause me to lose sight of the cross-hairs. I placed a piece of clear tape on my screen over the cross-hairs and drew one with a thin back Sharpie. Boom.

You should have stopped by Sidorovich. He sells an
external crosshair that you can place on your screen.

Sounds like my first playthrough, at the time I hadn't yet learned how to upgrade armor so I was wearing something like shreds of a leather jacket in the hospital. I learned much later that the CS squad leader in the hospital can repair equipment.
