Constant freezing

When I first started playing Clear Sky, I only had it patched to the latest version with Complete installed with no other mods. I was able to make it to Dark Valley, but I constantly had to quicksave because my game would freeze at the most inopportune times.

I don't mean the game crashes to the desktop, I mean the game would freeze with the in-game screen, forcing me to CTRL+ALT+DLT which made the game blackscreen and the task manager tell me the game was Not Responding.

Combined with the headache Faction Wars was giving me, I uninstalled Complete and am now playing with SRP V1.0.3a...only the game is still freezing at the worst times and now I save every five seconds in fear of the game freezing on me again.

Has anyone encountered anything like this? Any help would be much appreciated.

All four Stalker games have a habit of throwing up odd problems, and the freeze, which is usually just a pause caused by NPCs, mutants and stashes spawning on the edge of the switch-distance, is just one of them.

Sometimes those freezes turn into full-scale lock-ups. You're quite lucky in being able to exit with the task manager. That often fails due to the task manager appearing under the game on the screen, so it is inaccessible. The only way out of those is to hit the restart button and reboot the machine.

The only cure is, apparently, to acquire a machine with the processing capabilities of a fully conscious AI - something on the order of HAL9000. As such a thing doesn't exist yet, it is just one of those things us Stalker players must be patient about and accept with equanimity.

Make many hard (named) saves, not quicksaves. Never trust a quicksave. And never trust a Stalker game - it is hard-wired into the game engine that it should be bloody-minded, perfidious and sticky-fingered (after an apparently causeless CTD you'll find that things you found previously will have diminished in value - a top-level, 5,000 Ruble artifact will have become a low-level 1,000 Ruble artifact; a looted corpse that, first time around, had good loot will have poor offerings, etc.). It is a thief, pure and simple, worse than the bandits in the game.

What are your hardware specs? Is the computer's cooling system working properly under load?

I've always assumed permanent freezes and black screens are caused by the video card rather than the CPU. Maybe the video card driver could be causing trouble as well, as a last resort try an older version.

My CPU is an old 3GHz dual core from 2007, despite that my CS freezes usually just last a split second or so. Permanent freezes have occured, but only rarely.

Don't know if mods can cause these kind of problems, I play vanilla CS exclusively.

My cpu is AMD 6000 X2 (3ghz twin core) and I've had lock-ups in all of the games and mods for each, so it just happens.

I certainly happens, but my impression was it happens very frequently for the OP...?

If it's just rarely, the best approach is indeed manual saves. I usually make a new one before leaving a level and before important decisions.

i5 4690k OCed here

The games still have small hiccups. But they are half a second usually.
And rarely.

Happens in CoP mostly due to size and often respawns.

It is on the CPU.

How often do you get permanent freezes?

At worst, about every five minutes or so. Other playthroughs it varies. One time I didn't get one and thought I was in the clear. I'm still in the swamps, would that have anything to do with it?

A few things to try:

- Make sure you are not running any overlays while playing
- Run a hard disk error scan (chkdsk /b)
- Run a RAM error scan (Memtest86+ and/or Windows Memory Diagnostic)
- Try running the game with static lighting and see if that helps; if it does, begin raising settings until you deduce the culprit
