CS and my introduction to the Stalker universe

So I am fairly new to the survival FPS genre. I have been playing Rust recently and I wanted a satisfactory single player experience, so I decided to buy CS on Steam since it was discounted to 10 bucks.
I was expecting a lot more free roam, but right now I am in an enclosed area, the swamps, kinda being told what to do.
It's OK as a diversion, and I like the game's atmosphere, but not what I was expecting. Is the gameplay going to change later in the game to allow more freedom in the player's actions?

more areas will open up as the story progresses and you will have more freedom to explore and interact with npcs, but you will be constrained by the story till the end...

you may want to check out 'The Faction War' mod. it does away with the single player game and gives you complete freedom to experience the war between the factions...

You don't have to do what you're told to, at least not right away. The game gets more fun if you postpone most main missions until all exploration and side quests in a level are done.

Once the Renegades are defeated you are free to leave the Swamps. You can always go back to previous levels, and in some cases go to new levels ahead of the main storyline.

If you absolutely crave larger levels maybe Call of Pripyat would suit you more.

I guess I'm almost out of the swamps, but I have to clear out this farm with a crapload of enemies, and I only have the pistol and shotgun or hunting rifles, as I am out of ammo for my AK.

That weapon was added to your inventory in the last game patch, it shouldn't really be in the game this early.

Once you leave the Swamps, expect serious trouble entering Cordon (there'll be an alternative route if you go back through the Swamps, though).

Don't forget to explore the Swamps for artifacts before leaving.

don't leave the swamps until you have found all the artifacts (don't sell them, you'll need them later), the veles detector in Doc's cave, done all the side missions and gotten all the stashes you can (there are about 60). you get the side missions and stash info from NPCs so talk to everyone you meet.

there is a ton of stuff to find and loot from dead bodies so look everywhere and sell the stuff you have a lot of to get money to upgrade your weapons/armour.

you'll need to find the flash drives for the technicians so they can do the more advanced upgrades.

if you are not using the SRP mod, then get it and start over before its too late...

Alas, activating all of those before leaving the Swamps requires a lot of grinding (usually by the truck near the Machine Yard). That's one of my complaints about the Swamps: so many stashes, but too few victims to activate them.

Thanks for the tips guys. I did collect my eward and was ready to leave the swamps but I think based on what you've said, I will do some more exploring. I am reasonably well armed but still no ammo for the AK, I have an SMG and some ammo for that though, very little, as well as a better shotgun.
Question: I sold Clear Sky a crapload of weapons for which I got very little money. Will those in any way affect the factions war? Granted, it's nothing they didn't yet have.

There's a little in the Machine Yard, but that's all unless you loot AK's with ammo in them from NPCs.

You can upgrade it to use the more common 9x18 ammo. Also don't forget to buy the very capable CS-1 suit and upgrade it.

Later on in the game I recommend selling especially upgraded weapons to CS, they pay better than anyone else for those.

No, you can trade with anyone you like (that's not hostile).
