Skipping the first mission

Probably someone has done this, but anyway: instead of helping the CS members under attack from the boars (the very first "practice" mission) I ran off towards the southern farmstead. Got under cover just in time for the emission.

After that I could do a quest for the CS squad leader (capture point from mutants), but alas the squad never followed me there. When I asked the guide he couldn't lead me anywhere, not even back to the CS base.

When I went back to the location of the first (failed) mission, the CS stalker in the tower was still alive and shouting, but dropped dead as soon as I arrived. No new emission appeared, in effect making me stranded in the swamps. I guess one might try the twilight zone level changers, though...

By skipping that mission you've broken the game I'm afraid, you won't be able to exit the swamps as the level changers won't be activated.

You gotta play along to some degree

COOL
I tried the same but probably planned the escape too far (unrealistic) and didn't make to the cover.
I assumed then that this event takes you back to CS base no matter what.

Trying to sneak away from responsibilities ...

... oh well, should have guessed that won't end well
http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/1618/csexperiments26.jpg

(for details, see screenshot thread p 32 "Some experiments with the new game" )
I admit that my short-term goals were a little different then - i wanted to gather a basic supply pack to travel further fast.

Robomook, the levelchanger won't be a problem

Will add another pic as soon as i find and upload it.

OK- here:

Lookst that following your scenario, you could enter the Limansk gates with even earlier missions active. I wonder if that would mean friendlier Renegades as well...

Took me a few tries before I succeeded, even when I took the shortest way.

Checked it on the PDA, it seems the ones in the Swamps are 100% hostile even before you join CS.

Edit: where's the hidden level changer in the Swamps, again?

The "teleport cluster" is right behind the South farm (quite a detour to get there from the twilight xone entry point ).
Caution is needed - the changers are not too clear, the area is filled with invisible walls, and among the TZ teleports there is one "real" levelchanger that takes you to the Cordon tunnel (and thus activates the main mission Cordon part IIRC).

very interesting idea. i've been playing around with it for most of the night. i made it to the fishing hamlet just in time to survive the emission. then i went to find the entry to the TZ and then on to the teleport cluster by the southern farmstead.

i made it to the bridge at limansk and did some exploring.

are the teleports near the bridge random or does it depend on which direction you go? i teleported to dark valley, garbage, cordon and the swamps. i also managed to cross the river and get into yantar and then the red forest.
-edit- ok I see how it works. thanks hhiker

i noticed that on the mini map the level changers in the swamps are visible and they work to enter the swamps but once you get back in they disappear.

i could do this for days, its like "free play", all the side quests seem to work too so there is lots to do.

I first tried climbing the tree growing across the fence, but while I did manage to land on the other side of the fence I still got stuck in a pocket between the fence and the invisible barrier.
Edit: that was at the fishing hamlet.

Thanks! Before I was running around down by the water...

BTW one must stay away from the level changers when moving south, otherwise they'll force you back into the swamps.

Arriving at the Loner base in Cordon, I heard gunfire from inside the building. Turned out to be the prison guard shooting poor Khaletskiy again and again.

Since the guide didn't take me anywhere, I had to go through Dark Valley to get south of the railroad bridge. Khaletskiy's driver was not in the tunnel, Sidorovich was not open for business and Wolf didn't speak to me.

In Yantar Sacharov didn't open, but Forester did in Red Forest.

In Army Warehouses the teleporters in the Bloodsucker Village made the screen go black --isn't it blue otherwise?

The only guides I remember that takes you anywhere are the Bandits'.

Yes, and when you first enter Dark Valley Scar talks about Fang.

In the DV factory, a door on the second floor is locked, but if you instead climb up through the crane and go to the backside the merc tunnel is blown up anyway.

Did you only saw the collapsed tunnel or did your moves trigger the "explosion" too?

* The teleport houses- yep, they flash blue in the beginning of normal game course but after the storyline quests in the Warehouses the blue flash disappears (i always described it as "no blue" to myself but it could be the same "black flash" you describe, maybe?)

* When you went to Red forest, what did you see inside the tunnel that Strelok will "blow up"?

*The "order of teleports" on different maps is not random, but they're very close together so it's often difficult to say where one ends and another starts. (Look at the thread i linked earlier, you'll find the maps of Yantar changers there- although going to yantar with first mission skipped is not recommended - the emitter is at its full power.)
I know that in Garbage if you align yourself perfectly south with compass, and "draw" straight lines wrom the westernmost tree in the nearest group, and that broken fence beside road... then the "corner" that formswhere those lines meet, marks the step to Cordon; a few steps southward is Dark Valley (iirc) and i think Agroprom was on the same line...
Anyway, i think someone had a map drawn about those as well.

Got both the explosion and the mercs' radio communication!

Strange... could this be intentional?

It looked as usual when you enter it before Strelok blows it up, i.e. a few explosive barrels, grenades etc. There were a lot of (empty) wood creates, can't remember if that's normnal.

There was no artifact in Strelok's stash down by the waterline.

When I ran through the forest I met pseudo dogs, but no bloodsucker. Only tried it once, though.

I also met a friendly stalker group at Dark Yar, but they were not ready to go to Devilish Encampment.
EDIT: asked the wrong guy, they were indeed ready.

I have pictures of this saved, but of course they should be printed out on paper to be of any use while playing...

When leaving Agroprom for Yantar I got the Sunrise suit for helping the stalkers, this was most welcome since I had relied on my leather jacket until then. But despite that suit and a couple of anti-Psi artifacts I couldn't make it through the Yantar factory, so I had to go through the Twilight Zone to reach the level changer for Red Forest from the other direction.

Yes, that's normal.
When the explosives are blown up (either by Strelok, or by you ), these crates will be smashed.

The bloodsucker won't appear until you trigger the "SOS signal" mission there. It's so nice and quiet before
Same with the Dark yar crew - they don't want to go anywhere before some main mission poins are completed (although, now that you've awoke the mutants they probably won't live that long.)

Not while in Agroprom! (I only used the Twilight Zone to get out of the Swamps and use the normal level changers after that.)

Also I would have to kill all the Renegade trader's friends as part of the haggling.

probably been done, but has anyone slid into army warehouses (in a normal game) without talking to the outpost commander?
http://i33.tinypic.com/2r2vzeo.jpg

its lots of fun! you can do the side quests for freedom, or help in the battle against monolith. hog is there but he wont talk to you. but the best is the actual army warehouse section. there is a squad of military constantly fighting a ton of zombies:
http://i36.tinypic.com/zunivq.jpg
http://i38.tinypic.com/szan3c.jpg

you can take out the military and the zombies, or you can just sit on the bridge over the tracks sniping (& looting) zombies all day long. . . 'cus they just keep respawning http://i33.tinypic.com/2h2gs4k.jpg

when you get tired or overweight you just go back and talk to the commander and the normal storyline triggers.

If you've skipped the first mission there are very few side-quests in the game. It seems only those that are tied to specific characters are present, except in the Swamps.

As for Faction wars they haven't really begun, but Freedom has taken northern Garbage from the Bandits.

Because the Faction wars are yet to occur, the loot is a bit limited yet, and the traders don't have much to sell.

The only Faction leader you can talk to is the Bandits'.

I haven't had an emission after the one in the Swamps, wonder if I'd wake up in the Clear Sky base if one occurred.

Returned to Swamps, which made the fighting between Clear Sky and the Renegades begin. If you want to take part in that with more powerful weapons (without cheating) this might be a way.

Success!

Got in and talked with Lebedev. Agreed to help him, but there's still no main mission in my PDA. I also asked Nimble about the tactical situation, and he replied that the war against the Renegades was won and the Swamps was like heaven now. Got money from the trader, and was able to buy a CS-1 suit.

Next I went to the guide, that actually took me to the Fishing Hamlet. From there I walked to the Southern Farmstead, where the guide took me to Cordon.

Instead of bothering with the machine gunner in southern Cordon, I went back to the Swamps and tried the northern exit to Cordon, but that one still didn't work so I guess one must deal with the Army. At this point I also noticed that Clear Sky's friendship had completely disappeared in my PDA and that they'd turn yellow again.

Made it past the Army in Cordon, and was allowed to talk to Sidorovich this. He even gave me a main mission, finally!

From here on the game seems pretty normal, except that the Loner guards were still firing at Khaletskiy as long as he stayed behind bars (even while their leader was interrogating him).

Also I couldn't find the General (with the Flash drive) among the soldier victims, perhaps he was at the elevator and I didn't search properly.

You should have talked to Sidorovich last.
Do all the Quest Item & Artifact hunting first.

I did get the important artifacts and a few good weapons before returning to the Swamps. I also did the few side missions available that early on. Didn't buy all stashes though, this is my 5th or 6th playthrough so I've become lazy.

The guides and level changers still don't work inside the Swamps (except for that one time they let me out of the base and then into Cordon). This means that in order to upgrade the CS-1 suit (didn't have enough money before) I must take the whole way around the Swamp's Twiligt Zone on my way out, and maybe also on my way into the base. The suit cost me 22.500, BTW.

Now I finished lowering the bridge to Limansk. On my PDA I have the reward from Clear Sky waiting for me in the HQ, but I didn't get the usual reward from the mercs, the dialog about Leishy's secret mission is missing and the merc guide don't take me anywhere.

Other guides in the game take me to various places, but not to the Swamps.

I was wondering what would happen if I made myself die by a later emission in the Swamps. Would I wake up in the Clear Sky base as if nothing had happened? Since emissions never take place in the Swamps (after the first two) I had to wait for one to be forecasted outside the Swamps, and then change level in order to be inside the Swamps when it hit.

Alas this made the game get stuck after the "Hide from emission" task failed. The surroundings looked normal but no game controls besides Pause worked, so I had to use Ctrl+Alt+Delete to end it all.

Were you in the map when it happened or in TZ?
I did some experimenting with Swamps and emissions at some point too, and being in TZ while caught in an emission always resulted in the kind of game hanging you describe above. (And i had followed the main mission properly at the time.) But while i was within the map borders, i died "normally".

Been moving around a bit more before returning to Swamps.

Alas not much is happening anywhere, it would've been great if I could somehow trigger later parts of the game, such as entering Agroprom Underground through the Twilight Zone level changers, or start the faction war.

I did get a sniper rifle and a machine gun in Army Warehouses, and of course SGIs can be found there too.

Ungrateful buggers, these mercs. Not only do they want you to rescue them from a 'Space Bubble' anomoly saving all their lives, but they also want you to spend a fortune in ammo covering their arses.

They're not lowering that bridge just for you and your Clear Sky mates; they need to use it, too.

Keep your eye on them. They usually camp just off the road on the opposite side to the Red Forest gates. It isn't unusual for them to find the mutant pack with their name on it, so you can check to see if Leshiy's withheld reward artifact is in his inventory.

No, just the entrance to the Twilight Zone there. Are you perhaps thinking of the anomaly at the Cordon bridge?

But in an earlier (unpublished) version of the game, it seems Scar was part of a scientific expedition to the center of the Zone when he became teleported all the way to the Swamps: http://stalker.wikia.com/wiki/S.T.A.L.K.E.R.:_Clear_Sky#Development_and_cut_content

The TZ is simply the areas outside the normal borders (fences etc) of a level. In these areas there are invisible level changers to the TZ's of other levels.

The TZ in northern Yantar is probably the easiest to access. There used to be a screenshot of it showing the level changers, but now I can't find the link.

Here's a thread about the TZ of SoC: https://www.gsc-game.com/index.php?t=community&s=forums&s_game_type=xr&thm_page=3&thm_id=14827&sec_id=11

Then there's another version of the same screenshot, which also has the level changers to Garbage (between Cordon and Dark Valley) and Red Forest (between Agroprom and Army Warehouses) added.

I think this topic not for me because i never use any mods. I tried weapon texts to the "configs" data in the game but we failed and game can't open. Then i reinstalled the game completely. So i didn't need them much. Game already enjoyful with it's own features.

Indeed discovering the secret level changers are great. I like this game's discovering feature. Because you can meet new things and events can be change every moment.

I think i found secret changer in Garbage. When you go to the north direction you can easily go to the Red Forest. Another one is in the Swamp. It's the north direction near the broken bridge if i didn't remember wrong. And you can pass directly to the Agroprom. Aren't they true ?

I'm still confused: getting out of the Swamps is already explained in the thread, while in Yantar all you have to do is walk north to get past the fences and enter the TZ (so you might even say the normal Zone and TZ in Yantar is the same). Or have you found some other ways?

If you've skipped the first mission there are very few side-quests in the game. It seems only those that are tied to specific characters are present, except in the Swamps.

Correction-bump of the above:

This time I found I was offered side-quests in Red Forest both by Duty and the Stalker squad at Dark Yar. After doing the Tank Machine Gun quest for the Stalkers, I was offered side-quests by Freedom in Military Warehouses, and after doing all of them the Garbage Bandits offer me their side-quests too. Perhaps finishing the Tank MG quest enabled the rest?

BTW one of the Dutyers in Red Forest had an exosuit and machine gun, never seen that before.

Unlike the other levels, the "Quest-Item" Tasks in the Red Forest & AW are
not Faction specific and may be offered by whatever Factions are available.

Now I was also offered Duty side-quests in Agroprom. I only accepted the first one, since the second involves the underground which I don't have access to.

Oddly it seems the Garbage Bandits only gave me that first side-quest and nothing more. I've never understood how all this works even in normal CS games.

I haven't been offered any (generic) side-quests in Yantar or Dark Valley. Don't know about Cordon, haven't been there yet.

The missions seem to be done in level order somehow. For me, they become available in this order: Marsh. Cordon, Garbage, Dark Valley, Agorprom, Yantar, Red Fores, Military Warehouses. Until I do the all the Return Item missions in the previous level, I cannot do the missions in the current level.
Still trying to figure out how this works exactly via the scripts and configs, since there is no order defined, nor restrictions on offering in the mission config.

Went from Dark Valley to Cordon. In the southern part everything was like last time I skipped the first mission, but when passing beneath the railroad bridge the Stalkers didn't open fire (despite repeatedly threatening to do so). Could it be because I'm slightly friendly with them? On the other hand nobody was shooting on Khaletskiy in the Stalker base either, so maybe they're all more peaceful this time for some reason.

Sure. Remember, I managed to skip the first (e)mission and escape the Clear Sky lunatics in the Swamp. As a consequence I don't have any main missions (yet), and people like Sidorovich and most faction leaders have locked their doors. Wolf doesn't even have any dialog.

A funny thing about guides: most of them can't take me anywhere, but a few do (Duty and Stalker ones in Red Forest, the one in the Freedom base, and perhaps one or two in Army Warehouses). But they all only want to take me to the Flea Market for some reason.

BTW, at Flea Market Wild Napr gave me a side-quest to pick up a PDA at the digger site (where a snork attacks you), but I get no dialog option to return it (perhaps it has something to do with the digger bodies not being in place yet?). Can't remember doing this Wild Napr quest for a long time --does it go away after a while in a normal game? Usually Wild Napr starts begging for money when I talk with him.

You must do Yoga's quests in order to join the Bandits, which gives wonderful opportunities.

This reminds me I still haven't helped Napr to liberate the Concentration Camp.

That's probably why my Loners aren't successful in Garbage. I allow
all the Bandits to survive and operate the Concentration Camp. They
actually don't harm anyone there and are a good source of supplies.
Freedom and Duty show no interest in changing anything there too.

Bump!

Now that I know it's possible to skip the first mission it's really hard not to it in every single new game.

One nice consequence of being a renegade from Clear Sky is that you can roam the Swamps as they looked before Clear Sky started driving away the Renegades. I'm currently tip-toeing around with my very inadequate leather suit, trying to find whatever loot is available.

Artifact hunting seems very difficult, either the anomalies are too dangerous or there are Renegade camps too close. I don't want to shoot any Renegades, instead I sneak close to their camps undetected and try to steal scraps from them.

A few stashes have been activated from looting dead NPCs, but I'm not sure how to get more without killing someone. Mutants seem to stay away from both Clear Sky and Renegades so far, so no casualties that way either.

At first I escaped from the Swamps through the Twilight Zone, as usual in this kind of game, but that makes the rest of the playing too easy due to all the powerful equipment you can find in especially Agroprom. So I decided to go back to my save right after the emission and stay in the Swamps as long as possible.

In the Swamps you often encounter single Boars that spawn in the bushes right next to you. It seems those Boars are not as limited to a certain area as other mutant groups, instead they can run over larger distances. Perhaps you could even chase one of these into a Renegade camp to get some action?

If all else fails maybe I could kill some Clear Sky members, but it would feel a little out of character.

Using the "Twilight Zone" level changers, yes.

There aren't any, so you must experiment. Be careful to make manual saves, otherwise the game might trap you in an invisible corridor where the only way forward is back into the Swamps again, so hat you must walk all the way around the Swamps map again.

From Swamps I usually end up in Red Forest, on the Limansk side. Then I cross the river some distance away from the raised bridge (where the water doesn't kill you) and make it to Yantar (or Army Warehouses, if you prefer that).

In Yantar you can approach the hidden level changers from the north (not sure if you can survive Yantar's psy fields without a proper suit, though). Here's a drawing of its level changers made by someone else, make sure to print it out: http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/895/yantarchangerje8.jpg (not shown: Garbage is between Cordon and Dark Valley, and Red Forest is between Agroprom and Army Warehouses).

Bandits will give you one too, as a reward for conquering the Loner base...

Yes I need the G36 , but not from Bandits ! I know that Flame artifact given to somebody in Army warehouses would gift you with it .. I did that already in my previous playthrough ...

The "Twilight Zone" is the name given by players to such parts of a level that are normally fenced off from the player. Please see earlier posts in this thread (and others) about how to enter these areas, and about the hidden level changers that are found there.

Skipping the first mission

Got a herd of Boars to chase me into the Fishing Hamlet, but alas the CS members killed them without any losses.

Most of the time I've been sneaking around Renegade camps, trying to steal whatever I can. Unfortunately the Renegades are very vigilant, but I did manage to get inside a couple of the buildings at the Southern Farmstead undetected, as well as the house next to the Church.

In other camps I've made the Renegades chase me in one direction, then circle around and move into the camp from the other side. That way I have been able to complete some CS side missions, like fetching the AKM from the north-western Renegade camp and delivering 5.45mm ammo stolen from the Machine yard.

Not sure how long I'll survive this way. The Fishing Hamlet supply box spawns more than enough ammo, but I'm currently down to just two medkits and two bandages, and all the easily accessible crates on the map are long gone. Maybe I could trade surplus ammo or artifacts with the CS NPCs in return for bandages to keep me alive a few days more.

OK figured that out thanks...
So I managed to just enter Cordon (officially) from the army checkpoint area ... I just talked to Sidrovitch and then I was on my own lol

Now I am at the Army warehouses and trying to collect some artifacts and if I'm lucky someone would ask for the Flame artifact and reward me with a G36

Skipping the first mission

Seems no new mutant herds have spawned in a while, don't know if that will change later but right now there are only a couple of single Boars left in the whole Swamps. According to the PDA I've killed about 49.

Especially during the night it's pretty atmospheric to sneak around outside the Renegade camps. I've managed to get into buildings at the Village Ruins and both Southern and Northern Farmsteads undetected. At the latter camp I later tricked the Renegades to chase me in one direction while I circeled and emptied their stash box.

My supplies have increased to 14 bandages and 7 medkits. My ammo supply includes over 200 shots.

Skipping the first mission

On my third day nothing new seemed to happen, so I decided to get back into the CS base using the TZ.

Like before, this made CS start their attack on the Renegades. I took no part in the fighting, but it was obvious that Clear Sky NPCs where vastly superior to the Renegades, with almost no CS casualties.

In all my recent playthroughs the Swamps faction war was over very quickly (usually too quickly), even when I didn't participate. But this time CS suddenly stopped advancing after conquering the Village Ruins and Burnt Farmstead. No new CS squads are spawning either. Loading saves, or making a return trip to the CS base (through the TZ) makes no difference. Since I don't want to kill any Renegades it seems the game has stuck here.

Angrydog: getting in is easy enough from the TZ. But once you're in there then you'll be stuck 'cus the guides won't work. if there is another way out i'm not aware of it.

Indeed Angrydog, now that I tried this again the guide in the Clear Sky base didn't work anymore. The dialog was normal, but after I clicked the final OK nothing more happened. Wonder what made it work last time...

Were the two situations using different patches?

No, it's the same patch (no mods). A couple of differences I can think of:

- In my first game, Nimble said the war against the Renegades was won. In my current game the Renegades are still holding Southern Farmstead.

- Can't remember if I killed any Renegades in my first game, but I think I did in the current one. Maybe that (or some random condition) changed the outcome of the Swamps faction war.

Maybe I should load a previous save and help Clear Sky win the war before entering their base...

Didn't work. Loaded an earlier save, killed the Renegades at Southern Farmstead, entered the TZ and entered the CS base. Nimble confirmed that the Swamps were won, but the guide still didn't take me out of the base.

Note that he doesn't refuse in the dialog, it's just that nothing happens, so I suspect I've broken something.

The Southern Farmstead has to be under Clear Sky control and with no
Renegades there in order for it to be safe enough for a guide to function.

Yes I did wait until the Clear Sky squad moved in...

Also, note that I talk about the guide inside the Clear Sky base, not the one at Southern Farmstead.
