I have two PC's behind a wired router and have not even used antivirus programs for almost a year. Norton (2003-2005) was bloat -
ware and filled up the registry with needless crap. It's much better now.
An ex-Norton employee was one that blew the whistle on them for
creating viruses to cure. If I would get something bad, I'd have to use
a smitfraud removal tool (or something similar) to get rid of it anyway.
Useless software...at least for me.
I only have to disable the firewall when I want to host a game (which is next to never); other than that, it doesn't have any noticeable effect on my gaming whatsoever.
It is just the idea that the health system should not profit from people becoming sick, but take a loss from it. This idea apples also to antivirus software.
Btw I'm using Fraps, and when doing screen video the system really is working hard! My play framerate dropping to 20-30, but the video is very good (really huge files! Don't know what to with them yet, just for fun.)

Download DivX to compress the files or burn them on DVD. Compressing the files with DivX does have some loss of quality though.

suspect people from countries with public health care would be less inclined to pay for antiviruses.
---QUOTATION--- I do get a performance boost from switching off my spybot - sd resident and the ATI console (that damn thing eats resoucres like youwouldn't believe) ---END QUOTATION---
This is very true - and why I use ATI Tray Tools instead
I personally use AVG - why? mainly because if computer companies were serious about getting rid of viruses and adware etc then all AV software would be free - there's also a good rumour going round that AV software companies create viruses to target companies - but this is hearsay and a bit childish - but not beyond what corporations will do to make money.
AVG might be free, it might not be game friendly - I've never noticed it interfering with anything I play - not do I get any performance improvement from switching it off, not that I notice anyway.
So - my opinion - any one who is selling an antivirus programme is well a crook - its like selling you oxgen or your own immune system.
---QUOTATION--- I use Norton Internet Security, even heavier. Never had any problems in terms of conflicts between the security software and games. I dunno how framerate I will gain if I switch it off, but everything runs fine, so I'm not bothered. ---END QUOTATION---
I use Norton too, and I do not notice anything when playing, framerate being about 60 depending on how much is happening. If Norton begins one of it's ordered general virus scans (which I regularly forget I have planned), I'm sometimes kicked back to desktop though. I think I gave Norton order to tolerate anything from x-ray machine when I installed the game.
