Is the vanilla underrated?

I've grown tired from playing as rambo with one of mods installed, so I decided to get back to zero and play vanilla once again. I've been refraining, because I've watched and read reviews whose claims that the game is terrible/bad in it's vanilla state.

I'm currencly out of x-18 and so far the game is awesome and well balanced. I'm wondering from where exactly comes the argument that vanilla is bad? Maybe there is point in story where the game becomes tedious or something?

Yes, I'm challenging you folks to try playing vanilla once again to refresh your memories about the original game. So far it's fun for me!

I like vanila better for following reasons:
-not having option to repair items means that I have reason to switch weapons and look out for ones in better condition. Also it means that I can finally stop worrying about collecting and using forever unique items, because they can't be repaired anyway and a plain base gun in top condition is a better choice. Makes my playthrough more authentic and immersive, because I don't know when I'll get some of the unique guns and if their codition will even make them worth using.
-Not having repair kits makes preserving condition of my armor into a vital task. Makes the experience more authenthic and immersive. Gives reason to seek out those armors to be found in zone instead of just keeping the same one and repairing on field whenever I get an urge.
-no sleeping bag is not a problem. Graphics is something I don't notice much when immersed.
-iirc didn't complete have tweaks to weapon accuracy and other aspects of how gunplay works? In that case no no no... What I want is more focus on tactical play and survival aspects, not on executing kills from a distance with whatever weapon.

I couldn't agree more. It's a lot tougher when you have to watch your
weight and stamina without Modding, without having to have your easily
repaired weapons like Modding gives you, without having all the available
resources without the hard work of earning them. My advice is to avoid any
of the "Complete" Mods. They are pure crap that makes the Games easy.

well, I do insist on modding my Vanilla experience by (at the very least) using a mod to remove the HUD and Radar

I am fully aware that you can 'just press a button to remove/enable it, but in ShoC it doesn't matter, since it re-appears when you open a backpack, use the binocs, etc. - and also I do not want to fall into the temptation of re-enabling it

apart from that, no crosshair and preferably remove the 'auto-targeting' from the binocs

if I want to find out if someone is friendly or hostile, I'll just have to approach them and see what happens

and however idiotic I realize that it is; I would actually approve of 'save-points' at various spots of the game (1, or 2 locations per map, depending on size/environment), since then it'd up the challenge, so you don't rely on quickly retrieving your loss (of course this is a matter of simply enforcing it upon oneself and only save in certain spots)

apart from these little things - I prefer vanilla-graphics at DX8; something I do believe I caught on from Tejas Stalker, many, many moons ago - when I was still wanting to push my PC 'to the limit' (the days of Super Mod Pack, et al.) only to realize that however much I pushed the textures, etc. it just didn't fit into the grittiness of the game

just my take on the franchise

In 2007, I started with vanilla. These days I prefer more hardcore mod like the NS Jt Paks. I feel that vanilla is really lacking in content outside the main quest.

Thanks. Can you write a list of those more hardcore mods you've played and give some idea they are about(excluding spoilers)?

Things got a bit messy around the trip back to bar from yantar, hauling over a lot of new armors, now I have to choose which one I'll use.
Another thing which kinda messed with my playthrough is that I planned to get the lucky stash in wild territory, hence exploited the save-reload to get stash coordinates... ...and the stash was glitched and empty. Serves me right for succumbing to greed. Had to go and kill Master stalker for second mama's beads artifact, but somehow I didn't regret it, because as I approached the camp they ruthlessly executed Wolf. Revenge kills I guess, totally didn't get paid to do that job.

Btw what are conditions for the mama's beads spawn in Dark Valley at entrance? Is it random?

edit: finished the game, all ok. Kept picking up fresh Skat armors while making my way through the final level, finished in flying colors. I overestimated the difficulty of the final game quite a bit, because Skat+set of bulletproofing artifacts made me more than capable of surviving any stray bullets and also I didn't come close to running out of ammo with preparations I made. Still died few times.
