Drinking mod idea

This is just an idea, and it's another of my zany ideas as of late, but would it be possible to mod in thirst? I'm looking at maybe including extra food and drink, and it made me wonder. People can go a long time without eating, but even a day without any water to drink is an extremely long time (and Vodka wouldn't really make up for it, would it?). I'm thinking this idea is as simple as the hunger function, but I won't hold out any hope...

I have no idea if something like this is hardcoded, but couldn't we just duplicate the hunger function and call it thirst with a new hud icon; and then add water, milk, or something to 'cure' it?

That is probably too simple to be true, nonetheless, if we could do that I think we could even add infections. Or alcoholism...

Speaking of which, alcohol should make you more thirsty, not less.

actually it's called the postprocess mod by Rulix and P.A.X.
http://rghost.net/828522

it also includes hunger and thirst, as well as poisoning from Bloodsuckers.

Anyone able to help me with this? I sense I shall have to get acquainted with Lua (bookmarked a manual) to just understand what I'm looking at in the scripts, yet alone add anything. Unless, of course, anyone actually knows the inidividual elements of the scripts and can give me a few pointers. I've looked through the download, and...ouch...

LUA won't pose any problems I would guess. It's just another scripting language you could learn within a few days (at least gain basic skills) if you are already familiar with other programming (or scripting) languages.

The bigger problem might be finding all the script and config files that incorporate the hunger functionality - if it's not hard-coded at all. Maybe some of the mod gurus here will read this and provide some answer on this

Btw, the Priboi Story mod introduced water bottles as new food item you can find or buy, but afaik there is no thirst functionality behind this. Maybe the developers had some similar idea in mind but didn't find a simple solution to implement it - but that's just a guess.

Well, the mod link posted is supposed to have thirst present, and it has a short thread on the COP Mod discussion board. Since as I don't have COP, I cannot test it, which is the main problem. This means I have to look through the files provided with that mod, and find out what parts relate to the bloodsucker poisoning feature (not sure if I want that, although it seems anabiotics - dunno if it's supposed to refer to antibiotics - marks that feature in the scripts) and what parts relate to the thirst feature.

I believe the hunger thing is hardcoded but it doesn't mean that a similar function can't be scripted. Some custom UI would be needed but I think that some mods already do that.

Sorry, I don't see the relation between thirst and bloodsucker poisoning

thirst should be incorporated on the actor, right? And the poisoning of the bloodsuckers lair (which is one of the most fun-making quests in CoP ) does not have to do anything with the actor being thirsty !?

I took the bloodsucker poisoning thing to be a special script element that sees the actor afflicted in a specific manner if attacked by a bloodsucker (i.e. poisoned), and that I might be able to learn something from this if I look for it in the scripts. Nevermind, anyway...

I thought of the sleeping bag feature. A drink feature could be similar in theory, in that if you went a period without using a certain item, a specific effect would be felt (in this case, loss of health, maybe even being light-headed and having blurred vision, perhaps also a loss of stamina). Or is sleep also a hard-coded feature?

Good question. No idea (yet). But I agree this should be similar to having a thirst feature (what would be cool indeed)

It can't be, otherwise noone would make it work in their mods. Hardcoded=unmoddable.
