Talking about nightmares...

Even though FarCry is a bit cartoonish, i was pretty freaked for a moment when i snipet at a soldier in a forest and got a ugly looking beast ruuning towards me..

If that was a scary second, i cant imagine what STALKER will do to ppl when they are in a basement with some bloodsuckers coming from all around

Actually, Doom. I don't think S.T.A.L.K.E.R. won't be scary, don't get my wrong. It's just that Doom III is a scripted game that every moment of it is designed to make shit in your pants. Too bad after one try it already loses the replay value, and it's undeniably short compared to S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

So... Doom 3 will be scarier in the short-term due to it being scripted and Stalker will be scarier in the long term as it will keep scaring over and over again, right?

you are about right Nazikiller but not quite.
You say that DoomIII is going to be scarier due to its script. Ok, i can agry, but the reason DOOMIII lacks true fear is due to its cartoonish characters and the imaginary monsters.

When you are in the world of STALKER, you are in a real enviroment, using real weapons and are in the enviroment that speaks scary for itself...
Walking down a dark hallway when a who knows what is going to attack is pretty nifty and scary.

now, you have doom... When you are going down a hallway, you kinda expect that in a moment or two, a monster of sdome sort will attack you... this game is liniar and thats why you know almost for sure that something is about to go down..

Stalker on the other hand is full of anomalities and an empty enviroment which is totaly up to you to explore and get to know the new faces around the block!

So familiar objects are more scary than alien/foreign ones? That makes sense, Yogi Bear. It's the mood and atmosphere that make a game scary. You get the gamer to think he's safe, and then have some freaky demon fall down right in front of him to make him wet his pants and hide in a shower cubicle all day.

Like System Shock 2 for instance. You wake up and explore a little, and as you walk into a room a computer explodes in your face. A simulation of the resulting events:

Me: "Dum-dee-dum-dum-dah. This game isn't that sc-
SS2: *BOOOOOOOOM*
Me: *Scream of terror and surprise* "I'm going to need a new deskchair, let alone a change of pants!"

And so on. The way the monsters call out to you is particularly freaky.

Robot: "Sir, where are you? You don't need to hide."
Robot: "I'm just trying to help you sir"

stlaker will have tension, because the entire world is non liniar so that no one ever knows when some group of dogs might just come walking out of a door and start chasing you. Or you could come up to the carcass of stalker and then it truns into zombie and chases u. So deffinately stalker will have more tension, it depneds upon if the person is more scared of the tension before the action, or the action itself
