Common STALKER backgrounds

I am new to the stalker games, but am enjoying them alot. I am trying to think of a background for my stalker. What are some common ones?

Are some ex-military? ex-police?

Are some just down on their luck guys who steal a pistol and head to the zone?

Interested in hearing some different background storys.

Stalker Backgrounds

First off, welcome to the forums! S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has an amazing atmosphere and a lot of gamers have decided to make their own stories and characters in the Zone.

I myself have a story that you can find back in the stories section that a lot of people have written their own characters and backgrounds for.

From what I've received in writing, there are a few common similarities, but that is where it stops; everyone has their own image of Stalkers and the very Zone itself.

BUT, since you are curious - I will give you some common backgrounds that I have seen as well as some that might help you out a little.

The Broken Heart: A Stalker who entered the Zone because he has literally lost everything of value to him in his life as either a direct or indirect result of the Chernobyl incident. Typically the quiet, reserved Stalker that is not easily phased by the utter decay of the world around him.

The Convict: Someone who has escaped from prison seeking refuge in a place the government would not bother to look for them. They entered the Zone in hopes of eluding their captors and possibly building a small fortune for themselves so that they can one day return to the world.

The Deserter: Someone who has left everything, whether a career, military service, or his family in pursuit of adventure and wealth in the Zone. Usually, this type of Stalker is looking to get rich quick with minimal effort and will step on the toes of others and do almost anything for money. Since there is no real way to stop this course of action besides having a hit places on them, it can become a very lucrative occupation.

The Remnant: Similar to the Broken Heart in that they have lost everything of value, but the Remnant has either refused to leave the Zone since the first incident, or was somehow unable to escape. After realizing their fate by the second incident, they have either elected to stay in the Zone because of their unwillingness to leave their homes, are are trapped in a now inaccessible part of the Zone and are simply surviving on a day-to-day basis until they can escape.

The Truth-seeker: One who enters the Zone in search of some personal truth or an answer to some of the unexplained things occurring within the Zone. Theories range from military cover up to scientific experimentation - but the end result is usually to uncover some form of governmental corruption which resulted in the disaster within the Zone.

That should give you a pretty good idea of what I think a lot of the agendas of the Zone's inhabitants are based off of the game and my own personal view of the Zone. I hope that helps answew your question.

You forgot the most important one

The Amnesiac: One who does not know why he is in the zone or even who he is, similar to the Truth-Seeker he tries to find answers to who he is, sometimes in any way possible, in the end they tend to find the answer with a little more than they bargained for.

How can you forget that one, you call yourself a Stalker

Another question. How much of the happenings in the zone are known by the outside world? Would a citizen in the US know about 'stalkers' and the war being fought in the Zone? or is this stuff kept tightly under wraps?
