There used to be a time during development when the AI was very smart. They could work together as a team and employ different tactics. They'd suppress you, use grenades and flank you. But sadly they were forced to lower the intelligence because Dean Sharpe thought it would be too hard.

Huh??? I don't think any developers would dumb down the AI in their games before release. AI is one of the hardest things to do and excuses like "the AI was much better during development but game would be too hard, so we dumbed it down" are not true.

.

Actually this was brough up before and one of the Mods posted a link to the Dean Sharpe article where Dean said the AI was too much and people wouldn't like it and so they dumbed it down. I'd do a forum search on Dean and see what hits you get. I forgot which mod posted the link, I don't think it was siro, but it might have been.

There is always a battle of how smart to make the AI. I would have thought by now the options would let you choose better, but even on Master, I have Grunts standing right behind me, firing full auto and never hitting me. At 3-5 feet range, that would be nearly impossible in the real world

Maybe he was refering to the accuracy and damage aspect of the AI which is different from how "smart" the AI is and is easily changed. It makes no sense to remove abilities and features from the AI unless they were causing bugs and problems with the game.

If this really is true, then what are the use of difficulty levels? Instead of having the AI cause more damage and be more accurate, wouldn't it be better to have the AI be smarter on the higher levels with no advantages?

Sorry about sounding hostile, but it really ticks me off when people buy this story of "Very smart AI during development but dumbed down for final release". They usually say this for games that promise excellent AI but don't deliver. An example would be Elderscrolls 4 Oblivion. They promised next gen AI but delivered flat and lifeless AI and made the same excuse of "The AI was really smart during development but made the game too unpredictible for the player so we dumbed it down". But AI that makes the game world unpredictible and dynamic is better than the flat and lifeless AI currently in the game.

There were some developement videos around which showed how smart the AI was in stalker, It was a long time ago and do not know where they could be now, But yeah someone was saying see how they cover each other, move from cover to cover, flank ect... I don't see any of the stuff I remember from that short video in the game of today. In fact I don't see hardly anything they said the game was going to do in it. And I don't blame the developers, or GSC, I blame THQ, I think they made them release it the way they did. I just wish THQ would leave the Dev's alone and let them make this game the way it was meant to be, they worked on it for so long, They deserve to have it as they dreamed it to be.

IGCNPC: A lot has been made about the AI in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. What do you think the secret is to making good AI?

Dean Sharpe: You know, it's a tough question, because there's a difference between really intelligent AI and fun AI. A lot of times, really good AI just aren't fun. I think S.T.A.L.K.E.R had a little bit of that where the enemies were just too realistic and too intelligent, and it was just too hard and wasn't fun. So, basically, I think there's a delicate balance between realism and fun.

Damn ! Who "#"#%%&"¤@@$@€ is this Dean "Donkey" Sharpe ? Of course the game is more fun with more intelligent AI !

Throw this maniac Sharpe in nearest anomaly ASAP and bring AI back to its high level.

Sanex's A-life mod gives kind of a glimmer of what the AI used to be like. Been playing with it, and it is pretty rough when the AI begins finding allies and grouping together. Mutants in particular.

I can't say I really feel sorry for the devs or blame THQ though... Several years without much info or anything that seems like progress? I'd expect work like what I'm seeing in this game in a year or two, not as long as they had. I doubt I'll be buying any other games from them as this one was a lesson learned unless they get out some good patches fast.

oh god..you're kidding.
When i saw the trailers, i was impressed. I bought the game with what they removed in mind. when i played the game, i must say i was quite disappointed. i play on the highest difficulty..and there is absolutely no challenge.
Surely they can step up to what they had...frankly, i think the level of ai is pathetic..it irritates me even...knowing they did that....grrr that gets me.
I mean for a while before getting the game, i was sprouting off all i knew about the ai..which was one of the things that impressed me most...when i got the game, i thought it was all a farce..and knowing they had it...and took it out??! i don't know what's worse!!! !@#$!@#$ @#%@% !@$%!$#@ %!@#$% I feel !@$%!@# gipped now.

by the way Spanishearl, those things you mentioned are bugs. You should be reporting them.

I'm going off the forums...before i say something i regret.

Edit: Cooled down. Seriously though, i don't understand why they took it out. there's such a thing as phases between difficulty levels. frankly, i think the easiest difficulty is too hard for the easiest difficulty. and the hardest..well it's not nearly hard enough.
I've been watching this game from the shadows for about 3 years and the revolutionary ai was one of my favorite features. I mean the world that's supposed to be ever changing and such is a little too scripted for my liking..the game's fun..but far too easy.
They took it out..they can put it back in. They would hardly throw out something like that.
