Ok Stalker 101

There were these two Russian brothers they wrote a novel called "Roadside Picnic", one of the brothers teemed up with a film director and wrote a screen play called "Stalker" and asked the Soviet film industry if they could make it - as it was sf and a bit odd to understand and was no way related to politics they said "da".

The brother who wrote the screenplay then wrote another novel based on the screenplay, the novel was called Stalker.

Several decades later the wonderful Ukrainian company GSC decided to make a game and used the films and books as inspiration and thus S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl was born.

Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker film is interesting. Portraying a great and implicitly dangerous, not explicitly violent ambiance to the Zone, interesting characters, good performances from the actors and beautiful, impressive, elemental if sparse music. It's long and features thick exposition and philosophy with little traditional action.

That said, not everybody will view it with the same affinity I did and if viewing it solely based on preconceptions gathered from the game, you will probably be disappointed.

Taking nothing away from Tarkovsky's film, I think a modern film or high budget, high profile series exploring the military/paramilitary, fortune hunting, political and philosophical aspects of a "Zone" with mythology culled from everything from the short story Roadside Picnic through the game Call of Pripyat has potential. A modern film based around Roadside Picnic was supposedly planned some time back, but it doesn't seem it will come to fruition.

Edited to clarify Tarkovsky's film's basis, indeed, being the Strugatsky story. I suppose I think of them as pretty separate and distinct and so neglected to note that.

there were rumours that a film was being made based on Shadow of Chernobyl a couple of years ago.

Stalker the film was based on Roadside Picnic, there is also another film (again Russian) about two or three men wondering around a post apocalyptic world, its about and hour or so long, in black and white and they are the only 3 people in the film. I just can't remember what it was called. I think this film may also have been an influence on the games.

And talking of games made from books - Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" was the basis for "BioShock", the Polish writer, Andrzej Sapkowski, novels about Witchers (genetically modified humans) was made into the game Witcher, unfortunately only "The Last wish" (the first Witcher novel) has been released in English.

I saw the movie Idi I Smotri http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091251/ some year ago and somehow i found the atmosphere very STALKERish even though it's not set in the same setting or time era.

Some sequences of that movie really gave a bad feeling, like the kind of depressing metallic acidic agony sometimes present in the STALKER games.
I immediately thought that GSC must have used the atmosphere from that movie as an insperation source. Or it's just coincidence.

"BioShock" is a wonderful game and I readily, happily caught on to the Ayn Rand references. It's nice to see a certain depth and forethought present in a game. The sequel is subject to my eager anticipation.

Not very familiar with The Witcher book (translated) or games, but they look interesting.

That movie looks pretty rough. I wonder where all it was shot. I wouldn't doubt the game crew has seen and used many films for inspiration, or at least acquiring war torn settings and ambiance that might seem a bit homogeneous (certainly not to say generic). I wonder where that film was shot because it may be they actually used some of the same or at least similar locations, doing environmental footwork?
