You're making a mistake, but it is your mistake to make.

The only addition to vanilla that is recommended for a first run through is the ZRP.

If you settle on something else you'll almost certainly spend more time back here looking for cures and help than you spend in the game.

During the testing of the latest version of ZRP there were 4 testers killed and 7 wounded by bullets and grenade fragments flying out of the screen - just how much 'realism' do you want?

ZRP looks interesting. And don't think I haven't considered playing vanilla the first time. In fact, I'm still considering it.

I'm just afraid that when I play through the series without mods first, that most of the fun will be gone. Sure L.U.R.K. or other mods add some interesting things, but it is still the same game, and I already know the story if I play a second time. I can't even play through some games once, let alone twice.

In short, I want my first playthrough to be as awesome as possible. That of course means mods like AtmosFear, but it also means adding realism and difficulty through mods like L.U.R.K.

Choosing mods for first playthrough

Hey there!

I know what most people say: "Play through the game once without mods!" Well, I have decided not to, so please don't tell me that it is better.

For every game in the series I have made a list of mods I want to install before I'm going to play. I was hoping you could give me some feedback. I am mainly looking at mods that make the gameplay harder and more realistic, and of course mods like AtmosFear and Absolute Nature that improve the graphics.

For Shadow of Chernobyl, I was thinking about using L.U.R.K. as a base. Another obvious decision would be Complete, and although the mod looks very professional, L.U.R.K. focusses more on making the gameplay more realistic. Complete did have an Realistic Weapon add-on, so it is still an option, but at the moment I like L.U.R.K. better.

I also found the gasmask HUD from AMK very interesting. I found a thread with the scripts. https://gsc-game.com/index.php?t=community&s=forums&s_game_type=xr&thm_page=13&thm_id=20908&sec_id=16&offset=-120. If anyone could confirm they work, that would be great.

Unfortunately AtmosFear isn't available for SoC, but I found the Weather Total Conversion mod that looks quite interesting, but at the moment the download section is empty: http://www.moddb.com/mods/stalker-weather-total-conversion-mod. L.U.R.K.'s sky textures are said to be not so great.

And I'm going to use these two mods:
Absolute Textures: http://absolute.crommcruac.com/shadow-of-chernobyl/
Dynamic Shaders: http://www.moddb.com/mods/dynamic-shaders/

So, what do you think? Are there better options? I also found Oblivion Lost but to me it seems like they just crammed too many mods in there.

Thanks in advance!
