I was feeling like you when I started playing stalker. Sprint toggle is rather unusual for ego shooters. Normally you hold down to sprint.
Anyway, it's hard coded and not changeable - unless someone would hack the engine. BUT: You WILL get used to it - believe me. I did as well!
Something considered impossible is only something that hasn't been done yet.
Just assign the keys so that you are comfortable. Personally, using the WASD for movement, I find that sprint work rather well on X, instead of the standard C.

Thought it would be hard coded. I could of swapped the walk speed with sprint but walk speed is also the drag speed.
I have always used the keypad & right mouse for run or sprint in my games. I later discovered Autohotkey, i can now use all keys around the keypad area & i also have a keyboard with 4 extra buttons above the arrow keys.
