sky textures - how do they work?

Hey all,

I just have noticed that many sky textures contain a number of layers within one dds file, where each layer represents a different sky design.

What is the explanation for this texture setup? Are the different layers of one dds texture blended automatically by the game, or is there some sort of condition set deciding which of the layers is currently used as "active" sky texture?

The sky textures are cube type. What appear in viewer as layers are walls of the box that the texture is mapped on. The order of the walls is east, west, top, bottom, north, south
