Oblivion Lost doesn't work - what can you recommend instead?

Hello,
im to play SoC again, and figured I wanted a new mod rather than Complete '09 again. I tried L.U.R.K, but the fact that it removes the HUD completely to make it more realistic just doesn't work for me. :/

Then I tried Oblivion Lost, but after installation and I start a new game, everything is pitch black, and it is impossible to play. I tried to put settings to "Static Lightning" which does add some light to it, but its still near impossible to navigate what so ever, cause its so dark.

So, unless someone knows a fix to OL, then what could you recommend me to install instead?

LURK is the problem since it did messed up user.ltx ... you need to delete user.ltx in order to "fix" that pitch black problem.

Win7/Vista Location of user.ltx : C:\Users\Public\Documents\STALKER-SHOC\

Win XP localtion of user.ltx : C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\

Replaced the user.ltx with the original one from backup, ran game and same result. The only visible thing in start room is the ceiling lamp, which doesnt light up the room as the rest is pitch black (its like playing with your eyes closed).

Is it worth trying to delete the entire game and re-install? This is a steam installation and I have all the local game files on an external. Also, this is OL Ultimate. Since OL was same result, I hoped Ultimate would work but didnt.

Giving up on OL mod. Re-installed the game, installed the mod, still pitch black and unplayable.

What other mods aside Complete '09 and L.U.R.K can you all recommend? Im looking for a mod that changes difficulty and adds new stuff (weps, monsters, quests) - basically an overhaul mod.

try looking in the mod discussion section (where you currently are) and read the description of the mods - see if you find any that suits you

if nothing else, look at which thread has more replies, which should give you a (basic) indication of how popular a mod is

If you've played through the game a few times why not try a rebuild like Priboi story. You play a new character in the same areas with different goals.

I just did, unforunate how you cant list according to views/replies. Found a mod called Supermod Pack, it's 1.95GB, that 'ought to add something new... Do you know what I can expect from it?

I only played it through once years ago, then Clear Sky, but never got around CoP. I have seen the Priboi's mod, however as I dont remember the storyline behind the vanilla game, I wanted to play it through again before I start on Priboi.

Super Mod Pack is ShoC filled to the brim with various mods - it is a fairly decent mod-package with Oblivion Lost as the foundation

I'd personally recommend;

"Vanilla Enhanced Mods":
(these are mods which don't change the basic premise too much, but still offers a nice difficulty/enough change to be well worth playing)

AMK
http://www.amk-team.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=480

this mod is what Oblivion Lost used as a foundation
(you may want to add the Arsenal mod for more guns)

Old Good Stalker Evolution
http://www.moddb.com/mods/old-good-stalker-evolution

this is a hugely popular mod right now and adds a lot of subtle changes to the vanilla storyline, as well as gameplay
there is a new version in the works, but the current one is more than enough to satisfy Stalkers whom love the vanilla game, but wants a different kind of challenge

O.F.F.L.I.F.E.
(found in the mod downloads section of this forum)

removes the storyline completely and let's the A.I. take greater advantage of the A-Life simulation mode, as well as adding a nice challenge, new anomalies, etc.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Overhaul Mods":
(these mods change the game much more than just adding a few new plot-twists and items, instead they focus on bringing new levels, weapons, quests, gameplay, etc. and such are for those thirsting to sink their teeth into something deeply complex and time-consuming)

Stalker Soup
http://www.tecnobacon.com/index.html

this mod is based on a hugely popular mod by the name Narodnaya Soljanka - which adds so many levels/weapons/quests and everything in-between that it will take you hundreds of hours to complete everything

Secret Trails 2
(found in the mod downloads section of this forum)

once again a popular mod, which adds a new set of levels and varied gameplay - there really is so much packed in here that it's hard to describe

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

the above mods are those I would personally recommend if you are looking for a greater challenge and want to get the most out of Shadow of Chernobyl
if you also own Clear Sky, I can only recommend The Faction War - which turns (the CS iteration of) the Zone into a war to conquer bases and exterminate all opposing forces - kinda like vanilla, but without a story-line and greatly enhanced/tweaked/finetuned gameplay/A.I., etc.

Wow, thanks for that post. I cant find a working download link for AMK, so I skipped it. Im also overseeing Secret Trails 2 as it changes the main quest.

So its either Stalker Soup or OGSE. With OGSE it seems I get alot of new features for my 2nd gameplay, whereas with Stalker Soup I would really have to be dedicated to play everything through - which would take hundreds of hours according to the description of the mod.

Im not sure if Stalker Soup might be too much. Sure, I love Stalker, but its something im gonna be playing casually, not hours a day as I have more interest in keeping up with other games (especially with Borderlands 2 releasing in a day).

What would you personally recommend of these 2? (Stalker Soup and OGSE)

OGSE any day
it's a refined version of ShoC and adds so many little touches to the game that it feels almost like experiencing ShoC all over again

it is amazingly stable, has fast loading-times and doesn't alter the main quest more than necessary

it is very suited for more casual style of gaming, in that it doesn't involve any convoluted quests that will take you days to figure out, or new areas (like the infamous "cave" ) of Stalkersoup) which can take a very long time figuring out what to do, etc.

OGSE is by far the best "vanilla enhancing mod" that I have played yet

Mod is done. I can pick 3 options when I install, but 2 requires "Photo Realistic Zone" by Argus which seem impossible to find!

If anyone has a link for a re-upload please post it!

Thanks, the textures even worked, however it seems the overall mod is bugged for me. They all speak russian w/out subtitles, only when you interact with them (F) does it turn to english. Also, the red objective indicator on map doesnt show, so I have no idea where im supposed to go for any quest.

It would near impossible to play the game without objective indicator. What a shane.

the NPC's speaking Russian is because it is a Russian mod from the beginning - it's not really like you're missing out on any crucial information, since their chatter is just that - chatter...

as for the indicator of where to go next; open up your PDA and look at tasks - there you will be shown all your current tasks, so just double-click on the circle beside one of them and you will be taken to the location where the task is

Active tasks such as finding the "perfected suit", has a red ring on it. Clicking on that task just removes the red circle. The circle that is click-able takes me to the guy who I must deliver to, not the actual quest item. When I enable the red circle, it should show on map, it doesnt.

Then tried OL Ultimate (fixed the pitch black issue), crashed after delivering a quest clearing a bear camp. Then tried regular OL, crashed randomly.

I do have Supermod Pack, but the environment is too happy in it (colorfull flowers everywhere). Seems like in the end, the only mod that really worked was Complete '09.

Well of course, missions like "find the perfected suit" aren't going to point to where it is, that would defy the entire point of the word "find" being in the name!

Word of warning for OGSE though: mutants are going to be the biggest pains in the ass you'll ever experience there. I'm talking boars that can eat 50 total rounds of 9x39mm and 5.56mm ammo and still be alive to disembowel you with his tusks.

Vanilla shows marker on map for objective. If all I can go by is "north, then west of the dumpster and then two kilometres east" (random example), then I'd rather not use the mod. Some of the first quests you get are heck far away in completely different areas, I would never know these locations by heart, and they're quests you do as you progress further into the game and reach the place.

I enjoyed OL until it crashed (the new creatures especially, its always nice with something new to look forward to). But now I just got Complete '09, I dont wanna worry about it crashing anymore.

I will probably become very unpopular with you for my comment, but here goes:

I think you should stick to Vanilla game, or play console games.

I mean where is the fun in getting a task, and be guided to the exact location. If people knew where stuff can be found they would probably have gone themselves.
A lot of the fun in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is the exploring/survival that this game has going.

I would not recommend Priboi Story for you if you want to be shown the exact location of all of your objectives, if that is a must-have for you when it comes to mods.

In Priboi Story, you get a general location where the next document you need to find is, the rest is up to you.

I played World of Warcraft vanilla without ever using addons for showing quest objectives. Similar to Stalker, they give you an idea of where to go, however at least in WoW they gave you a name of a place in the specific zone so you had a closed yet wide area you knew the objective would be within.

Stalker simply tells the objective (Lets say, "Steal the Military Documents" ). Now, unless you noted down where this military place supposedly is from the questgiver, how are you ever gonna tell when you are at the right location? (and I dont find it funny having to use pen and paper to note stuff down). And documents, ie. paper, who wants to check every corner of a building and look-over every single paper in hope that its gonna be those documents? Without an indicator of where to go some quests are gonna be forever uncompleted, unless you are ready to check every single corner of the game.

But like I said earlier, im only playing this casually. If I wanted to play this seriously I'd install Stalker Soup which I already have downloaded, but I simply have other games I put my time in more than this, as I have already completed it once.

And no, not console games. I didnt spend a fortune on a PC to hook up a PS3 or Xbox360, the only console I like is Wii due to Zelda and Mario.

So, unless someone knows a fix to OL, then what could you recommend me to install instead?
---END QUOTATION---

I can think of two reasons why it wouldn't work: either you have the wrong version for your version of ShoC, or the files weren't extracted properly. To explain:

1. The last official version of OL is 2.2, but there are a couple of sub-versions out there; one is for 1.0005/6 but there is another for 1.0004. Additionally, there are many modded versions of OL, so it can get confusing. The filename of the last official release that works on 1.0005/6 is called OL22_for_10005.7z and the filesize is 177,742,471 bytes.

2. If you didn't use the official 7zip extraction utility, there is a chance that some files didn't get extracted or didn't make it into the correct folder. For example, I use Izarc as my main extraction utility, and it doesn't handle some .7z files correctly. As a result, some files didn't get copied over to the /gamedata folder and the mod was broken.

As far as everyone eager to jump in and recommend a different mod to play, I'd like to point out that most of them have probably played through OL many times and are bored with it. But for someone who's never played anything beyond vanilla or sc2009, it's a really fun mod. Its weather system isn't as cool looking as sc2009 (in fact I'm working on a merger of OL and sc2009), but it has a lot of cool weapons, vehicles, artifacts, monsters, ability to join factions, companions, etc. and I love it to pieces, personally.
