Is this a good idea for a new mod?

I loved the stalker game series but after 3 games of being near Chernobyl, or dare i say it, being in the zone entirely gets old eventually. What I want to do is create a new adventure taking place in a random small town in america, but since there aren't many radiated areas in america i was going to make the setting where america has some sort of modern civil war and all of america goes into nuclear fallout. (would make sense given the 25+ states petitioning for recession after obama won the election for president) anyways , is it a good idea, or would this piss off stalker fans or would it give them something new to do. BTW I'm talking a complete overhaul of call of pripyat (custom player models, new weapons, new features, 100% new geometry and maps, etc.)

No - you will be.
Stalkers map making process is a pain, time consuming, and complex.
Best read up on the threads here about the Level Editor, so you know what your in for.
Creating a total overhaul mod such as your is a lot of work. In fact, we had someone else in here a few weeks ago, wanting to do the same thing. He rage quitted after about a week, 'cause apparently we were self centered @$$holes who didn't want to help him. He refused to post in the correct places, or read what information there was available (let alone look for it), and expected his mod on a silver platter. There are only a few people with the level of experience required to make custom levels, and they aren't around that much. Level creation in the SDK, because of how old it is, is actually a lot of outdated methods and processes, which will take a lot of time to execute and finish.
My advice, read up on the documentation and help threads in the SoC and CoP forums, especially the Level Editor thread here, and make a note of all encountered problems and their fixes, as you *will* run into them. If you need questions, use the Level Editor thread here. SoC is still the most active forum of the lot, mod wise.

I've never done level editing in x-ray and if its as complex as it sounds I might not go through with it. I have done tons of editing in cry engine but its got alot more documentation than any other engine except for maybe unreal... Maybe i should wait and see if S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 ever gets released and start then cause its gonna be built on the cry engine (maybe not now that bethesda supposedly has the rights to it but we'll see how that plays out) And that guy sounds like a real drag. XD Thank goodness he ragequit cause I don't get along well with people like that.

No place in the US with a bad rep for radioactivity?

What about 3 Mile Island? The term 'The China Syndrome' didn't just appear from nowhere.

But your main problem is that the Zone was created by scientists who were employed in secret labs by the Supreme Soviet - the US doesn't have one of those (does it? Hmmm). They were taking advantage of the exclusion zone in order to perform nasty experiments.

I suppose there is Area 51. And aren't there chemical and biological warfare labs somewhere in Texas?

Might as well make up an entirely new storyline and background. I think it would be easier than trying to tie the Stalker ethos to some part of the US. It wouldn't be as convincingly weird if it wasn't tied in to that 70+ year history of communist secrecy and paranoia (and corruption).

And driving a Cadillac for a mile in the 'new' zone would just about use up every drop of available fuel in the entire place. The US is an entirely different bucket of maggots to the USSR. Even secrecy is handled differently. The C-Consciousness would be front page news across the nation before they even got it off the ground. There is too much freedom in the US to produce anything even vaguely resembling the machinations of the old Soviet state.

But don't let me put you off trying.

The Stalker books "Southern Comfort" and "Northern Passage" have a New Zone, which is formed in Afghanistan. Pretty good books, and it already has an established backstory and mutants and such.

I agree with everything you wrote, but it is hardly damning evidence that a person who cannot read or write also could not create a map.
