well....no they weren't

as far as i remember lithuania(in which i live ) was the secon or third country to rise up against the cccp(we actualy won the right to be independant)then following it other countries rised up as well but they had far much blood spilled because the cccp didn't want it to be a grand reaction of all the countries in the cccp union so tanks and infantry were sent(in our case were also sent tanks and infantry but there were only 13 or more victims i don't remember exactly and even then they were crushed by tanks not shot)

I was saying that that the currency is not a good clue. it would still be there even if the USSR had fallen. the zone is isolated and would not have recived any new currency.

P.S.

The currency makes complete sense assuming the grevne was never introduced to the Ukraine since the USSR never broke up....

I've been looking at some screen shots and it isn't very clear who the troops are. The camo could be that stuff used by MVD but im not sure and there are a bunch of different AK rifles. Plus no luck with flags on soldiers, someting on the left shoulder, but i cant make it out. Look at the UAZ (I think...) in the movies and pics, the logo-thing on the door has a blue and yellow theme, colors of the Ukr. flag. I dont speak the laguage so a translation would be helpful.

The currency makes sense in a way because the zone has been isolated from the rest of ukrain.

I can confirm that. STALKER is set in USSR Ukraine, that's why you're able to hear pro-Communist slogans in one of the trailers, I think.
---END QUOTATION---

It is in the day-night trailer that they say - "the ability to work, to learn, to rest."

Its an alternate (but close) reality. The USSR is still together.

I hope they don't include the Soviet history in the game. It's been awhile since I've studied such things. I don't want to be lost when they start talking about specific Soviet events. (Yes I'm an ignorant American. I'm not the first, and I sure as hell won't be the last. I regret nothing.)

Lol, I've been thinking the USSR has collapsed in Stalker for this past year. Whoops . But events like this would have eventually led to the collapse of USSR.

I can confirm that. STALKER is set in USSR Ukraine, that's why you're able to hear pro-Communist slogans in one of the trailers, I think. Even if that is not the case, I got the info from the folks in GSC. Also, notice that the currency is in "Soviet Rubbles" - Soviet is the Soviet Union.

i think i can explain
the game is aa non-fallen soviet union and the currenty is called "rubbels" and when the soviet union exestid all the country's in it used that money but now evry country has its own currenty
and i have no idea what weapons they have but i guess its something GSC made up or a resently invented russian gun(ufter the SU collapsed only russia had the money and resources to invent new weapons) anyway we dont have pics of soldiers holding weapons up close(not that i'v seen anyway)so until some come out i think no-one knows and if there are some please send me a link i know a little about weapons and i think I'l be able to tell what it is

I thought the game was set in modern times and the USSR had fallen...
So it would be logical that Ukrainain troops would be in the Zone. Though the stalkers use USSR currency (whatever its called) for some reason. Anyway the troops dont have VSR or Flora BDUs, instead they seem to have Sumrak Kockoffs. Probably not russian camo.

I'm confused now...

Remember the Location!

Keep in mind that the game is set in Ukraine, NOT RUSSIA! For example someone suggested that the soldiers should carry AN94 rifles. That is the standered weapon of the RUSSIAN army. Soldiers should have the AK-74 seires and elite troops should have the Vepr.

Other weapons
FORT Handguns (FORT 12 will be in the game)
Mosin-Nagant(stalkers)
AKM (Security troops/reserves/stalkers)
SV-98 (Elite snipers)
PKM (squad MG)
NSV 12.7 (on APCs ect.)
RPG 16
OTs-02 (small vz.61 rippoff, but probably more common)

Sorry, it was just bothering me
