Lost Alpha performance issues

It seems the performance is rather bad considering the specifications I have. Even when turning off SSAO or anti aliasing or even turning down shadow quality my performance stays the same. In some areas it is around 30 fps but in others it can dip down to the 20s and lower when action isn't happening. I have a 660 Ti, Intel i5 3550 3.4 GHZ CPU and 12 GB of RAM. Anybody have any idea what the issue could be or when it will be fixed?

Ress~

Welcome to the GSC Forums!

When you say they dip can you be more specific as to what levels you
are in, what actions you are doing and how many NPCs are involved.

Thanks.

Yeah, for me changes to the video settings doesn't do much to help perf ... to me it seems like in DX10 mode at least I'm mostly CPU-bound. I can run everything totally maxed and it's not much different FPS/gpu usage than it is w/everything on medium w/0xAA, SSAO off, and a bunch of other stuff off.

I just run the game maxed in DX9 (no grass shadows though) and deal w/the fact it doesn't look it's very best. DX9 runs wonderfully, still looks great, and keeps my gpu usage at 80-99% a great % of the time, and doesn't start lagging badly after 20-30 mins of play like DX10 mode does. It also isn't so damn dark all the time (though it's often darker than I like it).

disable grass shadows, thats the hardest hitting performance setting in this.

I'm on a Core i7 2600K @ 4.2Ghz, 16GB DDR3 ram, 4GB GTX 770, and I was able to max everything in DX9 mode except for Grass Shadows.

DX10 mode I'm not using just cause its not compatible with Sweet FX, Fraps, and Steam In Game which I prefer to have running with the game.

Steam overlay still works for me when using DX10. Another thing about DX10 mode is that it runs much worse than DX9 and has no anti-aliasing compatibility whatsoever, so it will always look bad in my opinion. Stick to DX9, disable grass shadows, and you should be okay except during sunsets and sunrises which still lag for me. Hopefully optimization will improve over time.

660 GTX is not able to max this game out..... look at this:

http://www.pcgameshardware.de/Stalker-Shadow-of-Chernobyl-PC-29081/Tests/Stalker-The-Lost-Alpha-Test-1118991/

even I can't max it out (GTX Titan, 1176mhz, watercooled), but I can live without msaa and grass shadow and voila no performance problems anymore.

the benchmark scene isn't represantive, since its up and down, depending on where you are and look, I mostly have frames up to 200 or over 100 then 60-80 or 40-60 everything but its smooth since its hardly drops lower then 40's and surprisingly 40's fps in this game = smooth. I only had frames around 40's in crysis 3 in some scenes and that was bad feeling in these moments.... so cant judge for other games since I never had so low frames before, but from what I read, most poeple say its bad performance when a game drops under 50 fps

Everyone has different thresholds of what "bad" FPS is, especially on the PC. It also depends on if a game has microstutters on your system.

For example, Far Cry 2 feels perfectly fine at atleast 45fps for me. Other games, like Stalker, jutter around if they're not at least 50fps.

I think the true mark though is that even on the most powerful cards, cards which work great on 4k resolutions, Lost Alpha still punishes frames. Optimization is a very needed part of the mod, perhaps more than any other feature aside from bug gixing.

Just outta curiosity, why IS Stalker so hard on hardware? Is it poorly optimized?

Hate to dig up an oldie, but a goodie: Crysis. Even though it's engine is poorly optimized, I can run it full blast with no probs. I can't with Stalker, and no way does Stalker look as good. It's definitely a nice looking game, especially with the DX10 render but, it's not Crysis.

I'm using Crysis since they both came out around the same era.

Figured Metro LL wouldn't be a good comparision since it's mostly indoors, and the levels outside aren't anywhere even remotely as large as Stalker. Not to mention Metro is DX11. It runs beautifully on my system though.

As for Lost Alpha, I have the grass shadows off, and everything else maxed out and, it's kinda choppy in populated areas but, not too horrible. Prob around 15-20fps. I think I might disable the msaa and give it a go.

Why are you using Steam overlay? Stalker LA is a stand alone game, no DRM or anything. Shut down Steam while playing, it only use resources that was better used on the game.

I FOUND THE SOLUTION CAN I HAVE A DOLLAR

TURN OFF *SUN SHADOWS*!! I AM USING A 550ti AND I WENT THRU ALL THE SETTING PUTTING THEM AT MAX AND MIN AND FOUND OUT THAT ITS *SUN SHADOWS* THAT WILL DESTROY YOUR VCARD EVEN IF EVERYTHING ELSE IS AT MINIMUM!!!
I'm now running EVERYTHING at max settings, except I have sun shadows off, and I'm not lagging at all. I am slightly overclocking my gpu though, +90mhz over base of 900, and mem clock +385. But I don't think thats doing much at all lol.
And yes this is in dx10. I started the testing in dx9, then when I saw how much lag I got JUST from sun shadows, and that I wasn't lagging with everything else at max, I switched to dx10 and it isn't lagging, on max everything except sun shadows.
