To the North

*Sorry for loooong delay, I've been sick and I've had to travel for military medical checkup which takes tooooooo long, sorry again*

I opened my eyes as I came to, looking around in a musty room. I was lying on a dust covered bed in a room with peeled wallpaper and a carpet beyond repair, mite bitten and torn. I could see the room was empty except from myself and I still had all my equipment lying beside me, I picked up my bag and put the AK in my hands, switching the safety. As I walked to the door I slowly pushed it forward, and as I stepped inside I saw two men with their backs turned to me sitting in front of a fire. I knew immediately who they were; Andrew and Berezi.

I kept my rifle at the ready and sat down beside them, watching them.

"You're finally awake?" Andrew said, taking a large drink from a bottle of vodka.

I nodded and rubbed the back of my aching head, "What happened?"

"We thought you were Monolith or a Bandit or something. I...I hit you on the back of the head. Sorry." Berezi said, handing me some bread, "Sorry about snapping and leaving you out there alone earlier today..."

I nodded and quickly ate the bread, slightly satisfying my hunger, "What time is it?" I asked.

Andrew pulled a small watch out of his bag, "It's around 9 PM I'd say. We stay here all night, going out in the darkness is not a good idea here...Mutants roam freely here hunting anything not well hidden. They know to stay away from this building because of our traps though, we're safe unless the mutants suddenly grow wings."

I nodded and stood up, walking to the window. We were on the third floor and I could see movement in the street below, a large pack of dogs were circling a large Psuedodog. Other than the soon to be bloodbath I couldn't see anything, but then I remembered what Berezi had just said, "Hey Berezi," I said, turning away from the window, "You mentioned Monolith, I thought they were all cured of whatever was controlling them?" I asked.

"A few were...We met a few who died not knowing who they were, although we've seen plenty here in these parts of Pripyat who still worship the 'Monolith'. They're even tougher having a mind of their own now and have nearly killed both of us on more than one occasion." Berezi said, Andrew nodding.

Andrew then spoke, finishing his drink, "Enough talk, we need to rest. We leave each morning to look for a way out, we get closer everyday."

I nodded and went back to the bedroom, lying my head down on the dust and falling asleep in minutes.

I awoke to Andrew shaking me awake, pulling his bag over his shoulder, "Come on, we're moving out."

I nodded, stretching as I awoke and pulled my bag over my shoulder, once again keeping my AK at the ready. When we were all down the stairs and outside the building we found ourselves greeted by a cold morning breeze and foggy streets, it was almost peaceful if not for the torn apart Psuedodog lying in the middle of the street. We walked over the body and down the cold streets, watching for any signs of activity. Finally we all stopped in a large forested area.

Andrew turned to me, "This is the way out, although each day we find the paths are blocked by anomalies."

"So what now? We find a way out?" I asked.

"Yes....If you get out with us we'll give you one of our artefacts. I've got enough rare ones in my bag to feed you for a lifetime." Andrew smirked, "Let's go."

Slowly we creapt through the foliage, dodging anomalies. The place was dead for the most part, but the foliage that did remain was enough to block the anomalies from site....Had we not had a detector we'd be dead in seconds. We finally came to a large tunnel leading inot the ground and facing west, I turned to my companions, "Why not check out the tunnel?"

They glanced at me, turning back to pulling away foliage blocking our path, "Last time we tried..." Berezi stopped, "Last time we had a guy who wanted to do it, he went in and all we heard were his screams....Then it was quiet. Naturally we never tried ourselves."

"What if it is a way out?" I asked, staring into the darkness of the tunnel.

"No-" Berezi was cut off by Andrew.

"We could try Berezi....It's been three months since Dolzhan went in. Maybe the anomalies or whatever got him are gone?" He said, standing now in the opening to the tunnel.

Berezi sighed, "You really want to risk it? After all this?"

"I'd rather check it out and die than stay here forever....You think we'll be able to live off of decades old bread?" Andrew replied solemnly.

Berezi stood silently for a moment, glancing at myself and Andrew, "Ok...You're right. We go now, might as well get it over with if we are going to die in there..."

We all stood at the entrance and stared into the darkness. It seemed safe from what we could see with our lights, only water and a few dog bones could be seen. We stepped inside one by one, myself at the front, and moved West, hopefully finding a way out of Pripyat and to freedom.

Bit of a shame, the story was quite interesting.
