To the North|
I followed the leader through the tunnel, following his feet as I couldn't see anything while the leader had a second headlamp shining back into our eyes. I glanced at Tall One and the two others watching the rear, I didn't see any patches on them, I could only hope they were Stalkers, although I've never heard of any Stalkers actually living at the center, at least not this close to the NPP.
"Shit! Sergei, get up here!" The leader yelled, stopping at the front.
"Can you get the light out of our faces?" I asked, he didn't say anything but the two men spoke and yelled at each other, from what I could gather the tunnel ahead had collapsed.
"How is this possible?" The one named Sergei said, "We came through not only twenty minutes ago!"
The leader paced back and forth for awhile, "I'm more worried about why we didn't hear it....Ok." He turned to Tall One and I and gave me the second headlamp which was shining in our eyes ealier, "We're going back, I saw a few branching passages back there. We're not going to lead you two by your hands, so if you want to get out with an armed group I suggest you keep up."
I wanted to say something, but all three men ran off back into the darkness. Tall One and I sprinted after them and finally caught up as they stood at the entrance to an extremely dark tunnel.
"Berezi, you're on point." Sergei said.
The man nodded his head and unslung an old AR-15 from his shoulder and stepped into the tunnel. He walked in about 25 metres and turned around.
We all stepped inside the tunnel and noticed it thankfully had much more room, we all spread out and finally got to Berezi, the man on point. After the leader and the other two examined a dusty map on the wall of the tunnel for about two minutes, making sure to keep me and Tall One away from their conversation, they were off again. We sprinted after them, they certainly didn't waste time and appeared as though they knew the area at least somewhat.
"Who are these guys?" Tall One asked as we were sprinting after them, panting.
I shook my head, stopping for two paces for air then sprinting again. My lungs were beggining to burn from the running, I could tell the filters were about to run out, leaving me vulnerable to the radiation, just as much as Tall One. At last they stopped at a large intersection in the tunnels, the two men aside the Leader panting and gasping for air.
"God damn it! The map didn't mention an intersection." He punched a nearby forklift and sunk to the floor, curling his fists in anger.
"Can you tell us who you people are!?" I asked at last, sitting down against the wall.
The three sat quietly for awhile before the leader spoke up, "We're Stalkers, of course. We live in West Pripyat, turns out it is damn near impossible to get to Pripyat from Zaton with a guide, and getting out is even harder, esspecially if an emission shifts the paths around. We come here, to the NPP, every now and again to get artifacts and find some information on the Zone. We've found some interesting things, but can't find any files at all, we've been searching for labs, we've already found several and one is just weird man, pods with dead guys in em, someone shot the place up real nice." He sat quiet again before speaking, "Looks like you two mean no harm, my name is Andrew, this is Sergei and Berezi." He pointed at the other two Stalkers.
I sat silent for awhile, thanking God they were actually Stalkers and not somekind of Soldiers or phycopaths, "So how're we getting out of here." I finally asked.
Andrew shook his head, "I'm hoping one of these paths is an exit, I'm sure that the workers must have built easy exits out of here...I hope. Before we go, here, take these filters, you won't last long without them...You're friend on the otherhand..."
We looked at Tall One who had no protection whatsoever, "I'm fine, I don't feel bad."
I nodded and while we rested the three Stalkers spoke to eachother, I couldn't tell if they really did trust Tall One and I, but we'd see.....

*I haven't fogotten, it's coming soon, trust me*
We finally got up and thankfully began slowly moving down one of the tunnels. Andrew and the others seemed to be as lost as we were now, aimlessly taking paths and returning once reaching a useless storage room or other dead end. I was suddenly feeling as though we were being watched again, just as when we were first entering the NPP, and this time I knew something really was around.
"Hey! We need to stop." I yelled to Andrew.
Andrew spun around, "What? Why, you tired or something?"
I looked over my shoulder, "Something is back there...."
"What makes you so sure?" He replied, squinting through his gas mask.
"Trust him." Tall One interupted, "He was right when my squad was ambushed."
Andrew nodded, "Sergei, go check it out."
Sergei slowly unslung his weapon and moved into the dark behind, he stood silently for a minute, then his light went out.
"What the fuck?...Shit.....Wh-"
Then it was quiet.
We stared into the dark, our lights now dimmed by something making it impossible to judge what was going on.
"Sergei?" Berezi asked the darkness.
An terrifying growl answered Berezi. We all ran into the darkness, in the fear and darkness it was hard to see our surroundings. I simply followed the dim light of Andrews light, and then I remembered Tall One. He was lagging behind, coughing and throwing up....I knew he was lying about the radiation. I ran back as he dropped to his knees and heaved him up.
"C'mon! You can make it!" I yelled into his ear, shaking him as we ran from whatever was not far behind us.
Tall One was extremely heavy and I felt like just leaving him as he now seemed completely unaware of what was going on. He was mumbling and drooling, asking who I was, where we were. I quieted him and finally I saw Andrew and Berezi's light at the end of the tunnel.
"Move it!" Andrew yelled. He and Berezi began firing at the thing in the dark. I could feel the bullets moving past and I could hear the creature behind groaning at the bullets striking it, but still relentlessly chasing. At last we reached the door Andrew and Berezi stood in and I dove in, tossing Tall One in first, Andrew slammed the heavy iron door shut and latched it with a large metal slab, the thing on the otherside began beating on the door, but growled after awhile and moved on.
I felt shaken about how many times I've almost died since I set foot in the NPP. After I was settled I examined the room, and the first thing I noticed was a light breeze coming from a nearby vent, knocking chains back and forth. The cieling also had a large inanimate fan with water dripping into the room, making the floor like a dirty mirror. Other than the few dangling chains and shelves with rusted equipment, the room was empty. I approached the vent and looked inside, it was large enough to crouch in, and I could see through the darkness what looked like a ladder leading up, hopefully out. I got the others, and without a word Andrew and Berezi solemnly climbed in, obviously Sergei was a good friend of them. I didn't say anything but grabbed Tall One, who was having trouble standing straight, and shoved him into the vent. He slowly crawled forward and gripped the ladder, he leaned against the otherside of the circular vent and sluggishly climbed. After he was about halfway up I went up the ladder, I could see sunlight in the top of the shaft, it must have been an air vent or something.
"I...I can't-" Tall One began mumbling.
"What? No! Hold on!" I yelled, seeing he wasn't even holding the ladder, but leaning against the otherside of the vent entirely, slowly sliding.
I climbed up and got beside him, I could see his face was puffy and red just like Scientist when he was sick. I heaved him up as I climbed and felt the ladder creaking under the weight, I climbed faster and finally reached the top.
"Help damn it!" I yelled, Andrew and Berezi stood up and dragged Tall One out of the vent, allowing me to climb up. I ripped my mask off along with Andrew and Berezi and looked around. We were standing in a forest clearing directly outside the CNPP walls. I could see the looming building over the treetops, now bathed in sunlight and it appeared beautiful in an eerie way. I dropped down and lied on the ground beside the vent, glad to be out of the maze of tunnels and now one large step closer to Pripyat and then my destination.
