Weapon modeling

Hi all,

I've been modding Shadow of Chernobyl on and off since it came out in 2007. I've had some experience with practically every aspect of SoC modding, except for the creation and modification of weapon models and animations. I've recently set out to change that, hoping to improve the weapons I've added that have particularly weak animations, and eventually working my way up to adding entirely new weapons myself.

Unfortunately, the only guides I've been able to find have been very old, and don't seem to quite work anymore. I've followed this one as closely as I could:
http://sdk.stalker-game.com/en/index.php/Weapon_import
Sadly, I got as far as getting the X-Ray plugins to show up in the list, but they can't be activated. I can also import SMDs of HUD weapon models, but only the bones show up. I've gone through the steps again twice, but it's still broken. I'm using 64-bit Windows 7 and 64-bit Maya 8.5 (exactly as the guide recommends, except for the Windows 7 part).

Does anyone know of any better or more recent guides to weapon model/animation modification? Or does anyone already experienced with this process know where things went wrong and how I could fix it? I can use all the help I can get on this one...

I am interested in this, as well. I don't have a definitive answer for you, but here is what I have been collecting over the last month:

Thanks for the links. I've made some real progress, but I've hit another impasse. Using the "xrayMayaTools.mll" available via the STALKER Inside Wiki, an all-purpose X-Ray converter tool, and the X-Ray SDK, I managed to get a test SoC HUD weapon into Maya 8.5 as a .ogf file. I then correctly (I think) imported a .omf file I exported from the X-Ray SDK. This gave me access to all of the animations. I made some changes to the draw animation, and attempted to export it as a .object file. It worked, sort of, except that the output log had a bunch of errors apparently caused by animations being unable to find their corresponding bones (if I'm reading this correctly...). Anyway, I can import the .object file into the X-Ray SDK, but only the model itself (with textures and stuck on a frame of the animation I changed) shows up. On the right, where it's supposed to say "Object," "Surfaces," "Motions," and "Bones," it only says "Object," and "Surfaces."

I'm so close... Does anyone know anything about this process and see what I'm missing? Does it have something to do with .skl or .skls files? Or am I exporting it wrong? Any advice would be much appreciated.

You need to load wpn_xxx_hud.object in sdk actor editor (that you converted from ogf,not the one from maya) and from maya export animation as .skl.And in actor editor click motions-append and load animation you exported

Thanks! I think I finally understand how this process is supposed to work. Unfortunately, I've hit a really strange problem. In the X-Ray SDK, whenever I press the "Append" button, the whole thing freezes up. It just seems to die for some reason. Is there some trick to correctly appending animations? Or could this be a Windows 7 compatibility issue? (I rigged it to use Windows XP dialogue boxes, so I thought I was through the woods on the compatibility front...) I might even be exporting the .skl wrong from Maya. It's a little hard to tell if I'm doing it right... Anyone else see similar issues with the X-Ray SDK?

Don't forget some of the tutorial videos linked on the SDK wiki, and some other information on gameru.net (if you can read Russian.)

I might try learning this stuff myself.
