xrParticles crash

Hello,

I know I'm not the first person to encounter this issue, but I've never been able to find a definitive solution to this (if there is one) and it's the single biggest and most annoying problem in my entire mod. Basically, whenever the player is in the Dark Valley, the Army Warehouses, or the Dead City, the game will eventually crash with this error:


stack trace:

0023:0292C36D xrParticles.dll, PAPI: articleManager()


I know it has something to do with the merging of multiple particles.xr files into one, which I did for my mod. But I exported my final particles.xr from the X-Ray SDK Particle Editor, and it never has any problems anywhere but in those three maps. Does anyone know of a particularly reliable way of merging particles.xr files? Or does anyone know why it would only crash on those three maps, and if there's any changes I can make to the maps in the SDK's Level Editor that might help with these crashes? Any advice would be a huge help, as this crash happens so often that those maps are nearly unplayable because of it.

There is a tool to unpack/merge/repack the content of more particles.xr, give it a try.

When i had this ctd, i just made more merged version from the particles, and one of them worked flawless in the game.

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, I've encountered the same problems with every attempt I've made to merge the particles.xr files, including this one.

I have, however, finally figured out what specifically is causing it. Because my mod is for personal use only, it includes content from a ton of other mods, including Dynamic Campfire Mod v1.32. Disabling the dynamic campfires has completely stopped the crashes, no matter what particles.xr I use. I'll probably just have to live without realistic campfires, but I was wondering, does anyone have any advice on maybe fixing this problem without having to disable the dynamic campfires? It only ever happens in three maps, which should hopefully narrow it down...

Oh yeah, i remember, i had exactly the same problem with merging dynamic campfire, i could fix it only with removing that dyn_kfire\\dyingfire particle effect from the xr_kamp.script, and instead it i used a vanilla effect for dying campfire

That sounds like a perfect solution. Do you remember what vanilla effect you used instead? Someone once mentioned "explosions\\campfire_05_disabled" as a possible replacement, but that's not actually included in the vanilla particles or in any other particles.xr I've found.

I don't have the files what i used, but something like that should do it:

explosions\expl_car_smoke_small
explosions\campfire_02_hot_no_fire
tests\_smoke_puffs
tests\_smoke_puffs00

The explosions\campfire_05_disabled - what i posted long ago - is not vanilla, it's from the unofficial russian 1.0008 patch:

Thanks. Sadly, I just tried every one of those as a replacement, and I'm getting the exact same crash as before. The only one that had a different (but similar) crash was "tests\\_smoke_puffs", which crashed with this error:


Scheduler tried to update object particle_instance
stack trace:

0023:0478C36D xrParticles.dll, PAPI: articleManager()

[error][ 183] : Cannot create a file when that file already exists.


Know of any other good ones I can try? Or maybe something I can change in xr_kamp.script? Could it have something to do with the list of campfires in there, like maybe something missing or incorrectly configured? I never really know what's going on with the X-Ray engine, but I can't help but think the fact that the crashes only ever happen on a few maps is an important clue. But I'm running out of ideas...

campfire_05_disabled is wrong too?

I have had a similar problem, here is the thread:

Maybe i just tried to merge more times the dyingfire effect into vanilla particles, and one of the merged particles.xr were good, and no ctd after. Damn, it was long ago, i don't remember clearly.

Yup, campfire_05_disabled causes the same crash as always.

Thanks anyway for the advice, but I don't think there's anything I can do at this point. I think it's always going to crash, no matter what dying campfire effect and particles.xr I give it.

Luckily, I did find a compromise I can live with. I'm keeping the dynamic campfires in place, but I've set it up so that lit campfires don't go out once all NPCs hanging out there leave or die, until the player leaves the map or loads a save. That way, it's still basically got dynamic campfires (no campfires are lit until NPCs hang out there), and it'll never crash. Could be much worse...

What is the situation with the particles.xr, which comes with the dynamic campfires mod? Is this crashing too? Would this mod be so buggy?
