Editing string_table_tasks files problems

I'm trying to do some machine translations of Russian stalker mods and I'm having trouble accessing string_table_tasks...xml files.

1.) On my system I can't find a way to get Notepad and Wordpad to display cyrillic and so any cyrillic characters show up as garbage, making translating using these impossible.

2.) I CAN see cyrillic if I open xmls using other programs like windows XMLeditor, MSword, Firefox, etc.

3.) BUT and whenever I try to open any string_table_task file I get errors. MSword says there is an invalid character, Firefox says "XML Parsing Error: not well-formed line 2, column 9" and other programs do strange things like refuse to open the file at all with no messages, MS visual studio will display cyrillic for other xml files but only for string_table_tasks files it displays cyrillic as garbage.

Can anyone offer help?

1. Use Notepad++ instead of Notepad, and if you open cyrillic xml, choose Encoding->Character set->Cyrillic->Windows-1251, and real cyrillic characters will appear, which you can translate

2. For automatic xml translation, I used @promt 7.8, it was quite good with russian files, and gives a good basic translation. Sometimes gives better translation, than google.

The best part - it has a file translator with xml translating capability!
You can load a stalker xml as example, the program inspects it, and gives you a rule file with the xml properties, what you can load into the file translator, which won't screw up the output xml.
After that you can translate multiple xml files with one click, and you can use the output xml in the game as is.

Of course you will have still some untranslated cyrillic words, but it's great starting point. It spares a lot of copy paste work.

Thanks for the help. Notepad++ works well, displays the cyrillic and all. And Google translate can translate whole documents, they just have to be cleaned up by hand. Now I have to get to work!

Each word should be at least 3 characters long.
