Shadow of Chernobyl: Flickering when increasing grass draw distance

Hi!

I recently discovered the STALKER games, and right now I'm playing Shadow of Chernobyl. This game is incredible!

I've been using xrpatch/ActivePerl to increase grass drawing distance to 125m, huge difference esp. with absolute nature! It works great in CoP and CS, but in ShoC I often get flickering esp. where there's open land/hills with vegetation, and sometimes vegetation and grass have this jerking movement. Is there a way to fix this? I've tried with 3 different shaders, Complete, PRZ2, and Shaders MAX. I've also tried the Photorealistic Zone 2 texture mod (which looks great), and that produced the same kind of flickering both with and without the grass draw distance mod. I'm really at a loss here..
I use an iMac in Bootcamp with Nvidia 680MX, Stalker v1.0005 via Steam, grass draw distance 125m. I have Complete+realistic weapons mod, absolute nature+structures added to ShoC.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It can't be fixed. Remember, its a hack. Bugs are going to happen. Try decreasing your grass density or distance, but the flickering will still probably happen.

Some people claim they don't have any grass flickering in ShoC, so maybe it's a hardware/GPU driver issue? Anyway, thanks for the reply.

I notice after installing Photorealistic Zone 2 on top of Complete I get some flickering when running around in the open fields (esp. steep grassy hills) when not using the added grass draw distance. It's less than with the xrpatch, but it's still there occasionally. I didn't get the flickering when only running Complete. Could there be some kind of texture/levels conflict causing this? Thanks!

Hi, creator of the PRZ2 here

To my knowledge, it indeed is the cause of PRZ2. I still have to test what makes it flicker like this (im running 201m a.t.m. while testing the performance) and I do too, have the flickering.

Ill tweak the mipmaps a bit, then the see if the shaders are the cause or if the vegetation sprites are the responsible ones. Hope to get this fixed soon

Sit tight.

Didn't someone on this forum note that if you changed a shader variable from an integer to a float that this flickering (that is, jerking motion) went away?

Or is that a different kind of flicker, like in and out of visibility?

Ive had the same problem with AMK NS with or without PRZ2. Seems when i first enter a new territory the sides of my screen start flickering, and the grass is flickering also. Im using the grass draw distance too. I have been trying different shaders also. It seems to go away after ive been in the same territory for awhile.

Most of the values I'm using use Float instead of vanilla code, but I might look up on what you meant.

Also, the flickering is when you're moving and you see the grass 'popping' in and out (as in it disappears from time to time whilst moving around)

Thanks Loner1, hopefully you'll find out what's causing the flickering. Btw. I tried installing Absolute Nature over PRZ2 (and removed the PRZ2 layers folder), but flickering is still there.

Overall the PRZ2 mod has really increased the immersion factor for me in ShoC. Looking forward to see how PRZ for CoP turns out! Your youtube clip looks impressive, nice how the vegetation and ground textures blends together..
