Return of Scar Patch 3 English

This topic was covered in the downloads section for SoC but never (as far as I know) in a discussion forum. I repeat here what I put in the downloads area for any interest.

Had not played this game before but it piqued me enough to have a go at putting it together and getting some English translation for the Patch 3 version.

The game is well described in this forum already and further information and links can be found at:

1. Install SoC Russian version 1.0006 (look for "Сталкер ТЧ 1.0006" in Google)

2. Add "gamedata" folder from Original mod (unpatched)

3. Delete "shaders" subfolder from "gamedata"

3. Overwrite with both "gamedata" and "bin" folders from Patch 3 (complete)

4. Overwrite with two following "gamedata" Fixes:
(1) http://www.unibytes.com/UNnZ_awgdYcLqw-Us4P3UgBB
(2) http://www.unibytes.com/2sI5JTQLZ0kLqw-Us4P3UgBB

5. Add English translation. First rename original "config\gameplay" and "config\text\rus" folders to something else (eg. gameplay_bak, rus_bak) then copy gamedata folder from:

Note 1: The text file needs to remain as "rus" even though it is translated because changing it to "eng" with localization.ltx set to "eng" causes the game to crash - has to do with the multiplayer aspect of SoC 1.0006
Note 2: There are some gamedata\script files that still need some translation but the game is quite playable (I think) without these.


@Stalkerstein, an observation with Stalker Dialogue Helper.
I found that version 4.1 works quite well with the "text\rus" files but when used with "gameplay" files it causes strange behaviour (eg quest markers don't show up on the PDA or HUD) and crashes in the game. For this I used v1.5.1 with only the <text> box ticked

becomes:
<map_location_type hint="Oleg"></map_location_type>

Notice the blue_location is missing!!


To fix this use an editor like Notepad++ and stream edit the files like such:
from: ></map_location_type>

to: >blue_location</map_location_type>


I'll have to make another version of the program.
Any suggestions let me know?

Make the different sections to be translated optional again so we can choose which sections are translated like in earlier versions.

English translation file update

Please note that the English translation file in the first post and download forum for this mod have been updated. If you have already downloaded the file prior to this post please replace with this new version

Changes: Fully translated gameplay folder ..... so you should see less Russian text in the game.

Thanks for this. I have run the gameplay folder through your version 4.1 and then edited the "task.....xml" files which have the code of type
<map_location_type hint="Oleg"></map_location_type> in them. Note that they have "green" as well as "blue". This gameplay folder seems to work now .... and it has all of the Russian text translated. As per the previous post I have uploaded a new version of the translation.

I like version 4.1 of the dialogue helper but would probably agree with David on "tick-a-box" manual version ... unless you are confident enough that the automated all-inclusive version will work in all cases.

gamadata\script file translator would be nice ..... but enormously complex and difficult I would guess.

Screwing that program up makes me real mad. Like your 'saying' suggests, here I am testing over and over again and in the back of me little brain it says - don't look at that it is still okay. lol

I do have a program for scripts, but I don't trust it enough to release. It was a real nightmare to do because there is no common standard when typing in code, and variable names are just as random as random can be. And it seems like every mod I attempt to translate there are script files where there is something new to deal with.

Another problem is I have no one to test. What I need is a Guinea pig.

As far as selecting what elements to do, this seems illogical. For example translating <title> text and not <text> text would mean you would have to run the files through the program again, and in many case this will screw up the files, and translating a mod would be more time consuming and prone to error.

Oh well, anything for Stalker!

By the way, Grunter-Hunter and I have spend weeks translating Return of Scar. The Russian to English translations are atrocious. That's a fun mod too, but a biatch to translate even with six translators. Maybe we will go back to that mod some day. But for now we are working on Fallen Star.
