increasing online radius?

I don't even know if this is possible, but has someone tried this? It would be cool to have more action going on in the level, also when the player is not near. This would make the A-life feel more real and dynamic.

It is very simple to do.

But not advisable.

In a busy map it could result in huge freezes where you are frozen, but the game is continuing. Those freezes can end with you finding that six or seven game minutes ago (about the middle of the freeze) something chewed your arse right off and now you're dead. And you didn't even see what it was because you and your screen were frozen whilst the game loaded up stuff a couple of kilometres away.

It is just a matter of changing the switch_distance in gamedata/config/alife.ltx - bigger is more.

yeah, he's right. I've experimented with different settings of this and found the default (150m) is pretty much at a good balance anyway. I have mine set to 165m now, which isn't really that much more than default.

but give it a go and see what works for you

Thanks for the info!

I tried setting it to 1000 and the game still runs smoothly. I loaded a game in Prypiat and I can hear gunfire in the distance so it seems to be working.

I saw there are three numbers for switch_distance 150,0; 150,0; 75,0.
I assume the first number is for NPC's, the second for mutants and the final for items / stashes?

Thanks.

The ';' means comment, so everything after it is ignored. So only the first number is used.

Interesting... so presumably the first number in the comments is the default. What's the second commented number then? Minimum allowable setting?

everything after the first semicolon is ignored. some modders leave the original values in place so its easy to change back...

GSC left a lot of older values they had been experimenting with at some stage of development.

Are you saying that you have an entry like 150,0 ?
That seems in error. My values have a single number.
switch_distance = 150;0 ;150 ;75.0
There should be NO comma between two numbers.

I'm not sure, but it seems to be the way in some parts of mainland Europe to use a comma instead of a 'point' so that 150.0 looks like 150,0 - no idea why the comma is used, but I have seen that usage on several occasions.

Not gonna be helpful with computers, though.
