Question About Russian Mods Referencing a Splash Screen

Some time ago I tried to play a Russian mod called Вариант "Омега", well, V3 of it. Version 2 back then worked fine with switching around some of the stuff in the text's configs and the like to make it work with my English SoC install.

Anywho, when the mod got updated to V3, it apparently also now included an .xdb1 file that goes into the "mods" folder. This added some extra stuff along with a splash screen, but after that the mod crashed. I messed around a bit with it one day and without the file I could somehow get the mod to start, with screw-ups, of course. Anywho, I suspected that the splash screen is at fault.

Some time later I read that Russian mods that add in such new splash screens reference a splash screen that doesn't exist in the English version of SoC because only the Russian installs had this and that the references to them can be edited out. So, my question is, does anyone know where such a splash screen would be mentioned in the mod's files so that I can edit it out?

Can you remember where you read about the splash screen reference and maybe provide a link?
I forgot to ask in my email reply to you.
I'm in the process of translating this mod to English so any information you can give me will be of great help.

Seeing that you're in this thread, I'll answer to the questions asked in the e-mail here.

---QUOTATION---
Firstly, what game and patch versions are you running, it should be 1.0006.
---END QUOTATION---

I was using an English version of SoC, and yeah, it was patched to 1.0006.

---QUOTATION---
Secondly, what patches and fixes have you installed?
---END QUOTATION---

It was back then when V3 didn't have any real fixes out so I forgot what precisely it was, IIRC I just had a dialog fix or two, though I rechecked and only now saw that culmulative patches are out. Also, I got V3 from their provided torrent that was listed on AP-Pro, so it seems that I'll have to look into the Yandex DL version as well.

I read about the splash screen thing some month or two ago on Something Awful's S.T.A.L.K.E.R. thread. I don't have a link at the moment, but I keeped an image of the post in case I needed it later. http://i.imgur.com/iYghWgA.png
I also did some quick checking around and I suspect that ddraig may have meant one of the intro videos since I didn't see it in the English SoC version.

Somewhat related - I've seen a similar issue with Lost World: Troops of Doom which also had custom .xdb* files.

The splash screen in question is the THQ game intro, which isn't actually included in the English version I believe.

Basically you want to open ui_movies.xml and delete the following:

		<item type="video">
			<delay>1</delay>
			<pause_state>on</pause_state>
			<sound>characters_voice\scenario\video\thq_logo_audio</sound>
			<video_wnd x="0" y="0" width="1024" height="768" stretch="1">
				<texture x="0" y="1" width="720" height="484">intro\thq_logo_hyuv</texture>
			</video_wnd>
		</item>

This will stop the splash screen from getting called, and you will be able to start the mod.

I think it's the other way around, ddraig. The Russian version was not published by THQ, so the THQ intro is not in the Russian version. But it might not be in the Steam version either.

You can also easily fix missing intros with -nointro as a command-line parameter.

Technically, the splash screen is the small rectangle shown on Windows desktop as the game is starting up. It is embedded in XR_3DA.exe. You can view/edit it with a resource tool like Resource Hacker; I see it as resource bitmap:116:1049 in THQ SoC, unpatched/all patches. See dezodor's comment in this thread:

---END QUOTATION---

Since it is embedded in the file, it should not matter which version of XR_3DA.exe is used as the image is part of it. So the problem is likely due to one of the intro cutscenes/images.

Ardias, a belated welcome to the forum to you. If it is an intro cutscene, the easiest solution is -nointro as mentioned above.

For future consideration, or if it is not a splash screen or cutscene as discussed above, I believe bardak's X-Ray game asset converter would be useful here.

SoCPUP is a cut-down version of his converter intended solely for packing, unpacking and patching those database files. It works on mp_military.xdb0 and is relatively easy to use. Put it in the mods\ subdirectory and then open the directory in a DOS shell and run the command this way:

socpup name.xdbn

For mp_military.xdb0 your command line would be:

socpup mp_military.xdb0

That would automatically create a subdirectory called xdb0 with the extracted contents of the mp_military.xdb0 file.

The extracted files in xdbn\ can then be merged into gamedata\. I suggest finding the problem and fixing the file. I think you would be able to just copy that fixed file into the associated gamedata\ subdirectory and it would take precedence over the .xdbn version of the file, but if it does not, you can repack the fixed set of files like this (using the xdb0 directory as an example, default would be gamedata.xdb0):

socpup -xdb xdb0 -out mp_military.xdb0

You can download SoCPUP from this page:

http://www.metacognix.com/files/stlkrsoc/

I strongly suggest reading the documentation that comes with it.
