How much system memory would you recommend for 3.1? I have 8 GB on a 64-bit system and I always get a BSOD memory error (Page Fault In Non-paged Area) as soon as the game finishes "synchronizing."

When I switch back to SWO3.0, the save loads fine. My current mod mix is SWO3.0, Argus Texture Pack, Darius' Sound Overhaul, ZRP, and Repair Mod 2.5. This combination has always run stable for me, but as soon as I substitute SWO3.1 for SWO3.0 I immediately get a BSOD.

Can that extra half a GB really be the difference?

Shit, I was feared that it may happen (as one of my friends reported this) - but its very strange that it happens on 8GB system.

I use 32 bit XP with 4GB RAM (so it hardly uses 3GB) and I dont have any crashes (althou I have 1GB GPU, how much do you have?).

Try running STALKER with -noprefetch in command line. Also try increasing your page file size.
I hope that it'll help you.

EDIT:
You may also try replacing the 2.0 SKY4CE shaders with 1.8 version (from SWO 3.0 package).
At the end - try deleting Argus texture pack - you'll at least be able to try out some of the 3.1 but I wont say that it'll be a fair tradeoff.

This way or another - I will have to release version with smaller skycubes.

Okay, so increasing my page file size and running with -noprefetch allows 3.1 to load successfully.

It is strange though that an 8GB, 64-bit system would have a problem, where a 4GB, 32-bit system doesn't. My GPU is also 1 GB, as it says in my sig.

I suspect a memory problem with my system, but I can't seem to figure out what it is. Only certain SHOC mods (like SMP and SWO3.1) cause it, and memory diagnostics and stress tests like Prime95 never turn up any problems.

Oh well, at least I got the mod to work.

Well so far so good, but I'll need more time to properly play test. The new shaders are nice, and make the game look more like SC2009.

I also had a neat moment where the sun went behind the clouds for a few seconds and the ambient lighting actually changed to match. That was a nice touch.

I'm going to playtest on a separate set of saves, but I don't know if I'll use it in my long term game or not. I'm still nervous that I might run into the same issue that I did with SMP, with saves that eventually cause BSOD's when loaded.

It's almost like my 8GB system refuses to allocate more than a certain amount of system memory to the X-Ray 1.0 engine...

Anyway, I'll let you know when I've seen more of the weather cycles.

Edit: Okay, so far I've seen partly sunny, cloudy, light rain, and heavy rain. I really like the new lighting. It gives the Zone a much more dark, dank, and gritty appearance without sacrificing realism.
The new sky textures during the day look nice too, though to be perfectly honest the bloom effect makes the extra detail nearly unnoticeable unless you look directly at the sky.

....Annnnddd now my saves are giving me a BSOD just like SMP did. I was afraid that might happen. Bummer...

Please stand by - I'm waiting for the reply form a friend (ShadowState) who has alredy recompressed and resized all skycubes.
As soon as I grab the pack - Ill upload...

I guess I pretty much, epicly failed on optimalization - not only the cubes are larger but they seem to have alot of unneeded data - such as unused alpha channels... I was learning Photshop while working on SWO however so I guess I have an excuse

Cool! Going back to 3.0 after seeing 3.1 is a bit of a let down.

I wouldn't call it an epic fail. As I said, my rig has always had some weird issue with memory intensive mods on Shadow of Chernobyl. It should have been able to run this. Especially since I can pile whatever I want on top of Clear Sky or Call of Pripyat with no problem.

Hey Trojan and darkh4,

I had an inconsistent bsod with a page_fault error using SWO3.1 in both my mods. I had...just removed the card it to see if it was the culprit and it seems to be.
The card is a 3 yr old Xtreme-gamer by Creative using latest Windows 7 drivers.
I had the ctd repeatable in 2 of my mods. Load the saves without the card...no ctd.

I'm only mentioning the card because of your friend and darkh4.

There is a typo in the env_ambient.ltx
ambient\rnd_outdoor\rnd_swamp\ambient\rnd_outdoor\rnd_wind_1

ambient\rnd_outdoor\rnd_swamp,ambient\rnd_outdoor\rnd_wind_1

Have you looked at Utak3 2.1 shaders?

Awesome mod!

Edit: Card worked great in XP, issues with Vista also. Hate the friggin' thing now.
Darkh4 with SMP I saw the same bsod... I think, I did not play SMP for more than maybe an hour.

Ooohh, that's right! It was a couple years ago now so I had forgotten, but when I had the problems with SMP I found that switching from my X-Fi Xtreme Gamer card to my motherboard's integrated sound fixed the issue. Albeit at a serious cost in sound quality. The sound difference was so bad that I decided I would rather just not play SMP than use integrated sound.

It should also be noted that there are others on this forum who use X-Fi cards and don't have this issue, so it would seem to be a system-specific problem.

When I get more time I might try again with integrated sound and see if the BSOD's come back....

@Trojanuch: Is your friend using an X-Fi card as well?

for those using an X-Fi . . . there are inherent OS issues with Vista and OS7.

TBH, it's not a Creative problem, as ASUS', Auzentech's, HT Omega's and countless other expansion cards suffer from the same "bugs."

. . . and odd, onboard audio solutions don't suffer these same problems. TBH, they're the only audio hardware that works flawlessly with Vista and OS7.

The reason all lies within the OS' audio kernel, and how it handles passing audio calls from applications to the hardware drivers. A ton of latency is added, and there are "translation" errors as audio calls are translated across the OS' APIs, then passed onto the hardware drivers. In essence, you end up with the same communication issues as if you had a translator so you can speak with someone of a different native language. Onboard audio drivers integrate directly into the OS via both the driver and the chipset drivers . . . in essence, WIN is given directly control over onboard audio, thereby bypassing the translation barrier that exists between the OS' kernel and other audio hardware drivers and applications.

Thank MS for being too goddamn lazy to impliment DirectSound and the same audio kernel that exists in XP after nVidia and Creative backed out of the Vista project . . . then trying to pass it off as being a "design feature" by stating that the majority of errors in XP were audio related (which is a load of BS).

-EDIT-

BTW, trojan I think there might be some issues with Sky4ce's recent RC with some hardware setups. I had a lot of issues (BSoD and artifacting) with them right after you sent out the SWO3.1 RC a long while back. Specifically, I was able to track it down to the SSAO options. v.18 worked perfectly fine, though.
