modding the HUD: how to

Well, sort of. I've found the right file, and all I've managed so far is to remove the textured frams around some of the information (which actually makes the HUD look quite cool and minimalistic).

if you use the config-->ui-->ui_hud.xml you'll see a reference to all items there such as:

<texture id="ui_hud_map" x="0" y="0" width="185" height="192" />

referencing the frame around the mini-map in the corner.

Don't delete these outright! All that does is CTD. But if you set the width and height both to 0 , it makes them invisible.

It's a start, so at least those who want to do HUD mods can play around with one of the right files. I'm sure there is more to it. For instance,

I changed the values for the health and armour frames:

<texture id="ui_hud_shkala_armor" x="185" y="0" width="164" height="38" />
<texture id="ui_hud_shkala_health" x="185" y="38" width="164" height="34" />

so the y value was reversed, and all that did was move the armour frame up a touch and the health frame down a touch, so even though they were moving on a Y axis something must be telling them where to be on the screen to start with, otherwise they would have swapped places.

Still investigating, but it's interesting nonetheless.

EDIT: Btw, it pulls these textures from textures-->ui-->ui_hud.dss where they are all placed on one big image.

sounds cool.

Could you post some screenshots of your findings so far?

So would a photoshop job making this texture sliightly less opaque allow one to tweak the HUD's transparency to liking?

Yea, I've been working on the HUD-textures all day, and things are taking shape. Though I'm still correcting my new frames with a bright color. When this is done I'll darken them fade them quite a lot. I have plans of changing a few icons as well. And I've allrady erased a few like the health and armor-icon. Haven't touched any config-files yet though. But it would be cool to move a few things around a little.
When it's done, I'll make a thread with more info and download-location.

This is how it looks so far. But the final will probably not look much like this.

Damnit, I thought I would be the first one with a HUD-mod

Hehe. So are you editing that one file with all the textures in, or have you found something else?

I've got a question. Have you been able to modify the UI texture files and keep transparency? I need to know how to, step by step, to change some weapon icons to match my skins.

Thanks, eh, and keep up the good work.

Lemming: Yes, I'm only editing the "ui_hud.dds"-file at the moment It's very easy to erase things you dont want, as you can just switch to the alpha-channel where you decide with white color what should be visible, and black what shouldn't. Then I personally would like a few frames left, just not the original bling bling that covers half of the screen.

Gohda: Yea I discovered that in the alpha-channel you can adjust the fading by different scales between black and white. A grayish color would make it fade. So the darker color, the more fading effect. Atleast that was the effect I got when I did it by mistake. Haven't really got that far yet to seriously fade them. But in an hour or two I'll know for sure. Just got to get these last frames done.

Which gamedata.db file would I need to extract to find this hud texture?

Okay, I'm sorry guys but I have to say that I probably imagined that fading effect myself somehow, because I cant get it to work again. Weird. Haven't slept for like 32 hours now, so that might be a reason

But anyways, a first version of the HUD is now done. Pretty simple so far with only texture-editing. But I'll have a look at those config-files tomorrow and see if I can move some indicators to make it look better, and so I can remove the crouch/stand indicator without having an ugly gap left between the light and sound indicators. That's why I left it for now. I would also like to get rid of the artifacts, wich is so damn unecessary imo.

http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u96/Da__Tobb/ss_tobeee_04-07-07_01-32-50_l07_mil.jpg

I'll pack and load it up in a few minutes in a new thread.

@Picartman: I have absolutely no idea. If you're gonna mod the game I'd recommend you to unpack it all anyway.

Has anyone here managed to find where the unscoped/non-ironsights crosshair is lurking? I love the idea of no crosshair but in practice it's not really useable, as I can't estimate the centre of the screen to save my life. I want to modify the crosshair so that I have some idea of where the unzoomed point of aim is but not a dot right on it.

BTW like that hud much better; I did ponder trying to make one a little more like the PDA and less like Fallout, but it seems you got there first.
