Maybe, only Psynexus knows.

Maybe he followed the group quietly into Pripyat and got into some trouble and lost them?

The Zone: Life and Death - Day 12

The next chapter is here. I managed to get this one out pretty quickly, as I had a lot of adventure focused around Phantom for this one - lots of things click into place for him (or not so much). I've been having problems trying to find a good way to wrap things up as some of you may know, but I had a good boost of creative drive midway through this one so that should help in the grand scheme of things.

I also managed to make myself cringe a couple of times after I realized how fucked up some of the things I was writing were (you'll see what I mean when Phantom enters the room he's looking for ). You'll pretty much be like "Fuck me... that's disturbing".

Here's a summary of the chapter + preview:

Dissent rises in the group as the stress of their mission continues to mount in them. Meanwhile, Phantom continues on his quest to discover the fate of his mother and sister. What he finds will not only disturb him, but change him forever.

Gremlin: What’s wrong?
Virtue: I… don’t know. I can’t sense him anymore. I don’t know where to go. Dammit…

*Nimbus comes up and places his hand on Virtue’s arm.*

Nimbus: Hey, it’s alight man. You’ve gotten us this far with only a few scratches, we’re lucky to have you with us.
Virtue: Barely a scratch!? Jargon is dead! If I had been faster we could be with us right now!
Gremlin: Virtue, you did your best and that’s what counts. Some things are just out of our control… especially in this God-forsaken place. Don’t blame yourself for what *could* have happened.

*Virtue takes off his headgear and throws it on the ground, then sits down on a bench off to the side of the hall and puts his head in his hands, his thick black hair running through his fingertips. Random thoughts bombard him as his elevated stress level attempts to balance out his thoughts. His thoughts switch between the present and his mysterious past. The more he tries to dig up memories from his past the more frustrated he gets. Finally, he stands up abruptly, picks up his headgear, and continues on without a word. The rest of the group scrambles to catch up to him.*

Gremlin: Hey! Wait up! Where are you going?
Virtue: This way.
Gremlin: Did you regain your senses?
Virtue: No.
Gremlin: Then how do you know where you’re going?
Virtue: I don’t.

*Gremlin catches up to Virtue and speaks quietly, but harshly:*

Gremlin: Look. We’ve all been following you on this wild goose chase like little goslings but I’m seriously starting to doubt your stability right now. We all are.
Virtue: I don’t blame you. I’m about to fucking lose it.
Gremlin: If I need to I can resume leadership of the mission, but I’d rather not have to. They all believe in you, as do I, but ever since that bump to the head I don’t know who you are anymore.

*Virtue stops.*

Virtue *shouting*: I don’t even know who the fuck I am anymore!
Gremlin: Shh… you’re going to cause uncertainty among them. We need them in top working order, and in this place it’s not easy.
Virtue *shouting*: Uncertainty?! Try this one: I don’t know who I am, or what my purpose is. I just woke up in this hell hole with all of you following me around. I’m sorry, but until the memory of why I’m here comes back to me I’m not fit to lead this little expedition into hell.
Gremlin: Very well.

*Gremlin looks back to the group.*

Gremlin: As of now, I’m assuming command of the mission. I’ve deemed Virtue mentally unfit to continue in his position anymore. Any objections should be noted now.

*The Stalkers are silent.*

Virtue: I see. I don’t remember what my relationship was with each of you before my little accident, but you must have been a pretty sorry bunch to be around.
Nimbus: Ouch…
Gremlin: That’s enough. I realize you’re under a lot of stress. Just regroup with the others and cool down for a bit.
Virtue: Don’t fucking tell me what to do.

*Virtue shoves Gremlin into the wall as the group gasps.*

*Gremlin shakes his head, picking up his fallen sidearm and re-holstering it. He looks at Virtue as he does.*

Gremlin: I’ll say it one more time; fall in and let me handle things.
Virtue: Go fuck yourself.

Oh irony

You are a cruel mistress.

Why is it that the monolith is so picky in the way people ask for stuff?

If you've played the game you know, or at least have an idea behind why the Wish Granter works the way it does.

I took that and basically made another "ending" if you will. When I first posted this story over a year ago I remember a "kwakkel" saying "I want to see this go all the way to the 7 endings." - that one was for you, man.

I was sitting here trying to remember all the endings when I knew I wanted one for my story. I could only remember a few, including the one I always get - the "I want to be rich" one (I can't ever bring myself to buy anything unless I absolutely need it). So somewhere in that thought process it just kinda landed on me given Phantom's situation, then again so has just about every event in the story anyway. I STILL don't know how it's going to end.

God damn I ramble... maybe I should just make a commentary. I'll include it in the finished story as special edition on Ebay, lol. ^_^

Good news... you don't have to this time.

That's right, I cranked out the next chapter: http://www.thezone.randombs.net/diary/day_12_2.php

I've got some good news (or bad depending on how you take it) concerning the course of the story; I think I finally have an ending. It's taken a long time to think over, but I think I have a more or less appropriate way to end the story. Your opinions and advice are always welcome - especially those of you do have characters in the story.

Summary + preview:

The group is divided. Virtue, followed by Nimbus and Enigma, continues to follow a strong sense within himself towards what he believes will be the end of their journey. Upon reaching their destination, they encounter a mysterious room and are greeted by a familiar, yet unknown voice. Meanwhile, Gremlin, followed by Zombie and Solitaire, follow in Phantom's footsteps to discover what's become of him and end up in a fight for their lives alongside some unexpected friends...

*Virtue stops, a wave of emotion hitting him like a punch to the stomach.*

Enigma: What is it, Virtue?
Virtue: Something’s wrong. Very wrong.
Nimbus: What is it?
Virtue: I’m not sure. I feel pain – both physical and mental, it doesn’t make sense.

*A tear rolls down Virtue’s cheek.*

Virtue: We lost something… someone. It hurts.
Enigma: What are you saying? Is someone dead?
Virtue: Yes, I think so. That’s the only thing that can explain the pain I feel.

*Virtue stands up, holding his stomach in like he’s about to vomit.*

Virtue: Come on, we can’t focus on it now. I feel that whatever is calling me forward can stop this once and for all.

*Enigma and Nimbus follow, saddened and questioning of the validity of the news.*

*Virtue leads them up a few flights of stairs and into a large hallway, both ends appearing to stretch endlessly. Multiple sets of footprints lead off down one end of the hall.*

Nimbus: It looks like Gremlin went that way… but what are those weird marks in the dust?
Virtue: They’re being followed.
Enigma: Mutants…
Nimbus: We’ve got to help them!
Virtue: We can’t. Now… we’re too close to the end, I can feel it.

*Virtue leads them down the opposite end of the hall. A light mist masks the end, if an end even exists. Finally, through the mist they can see where the hall turns to the left. They follow the turn and continue down the hall until they reach a small room. The door is ripped off its hinges and lies on the ground next to it. A sign on the door reads “DANGER! KEEP OUT!”. Inside, a ladder leads to a room just above them. Virtue looks up and begins to ascend into the room above them.

After doing a quick check of the area he motions to Nimbus and Enigma. They follow behind him, taking in the area above them as Virtue scans the room with his headlamp. The area appears to be a small storage area of some sort. Boxes line the hall. The Stalkers continue cautiously through the unlit room, their lights shining over old crates storing unknown items. As they continue onward, they encounter a door at the end of the hallway. The door is sealed with a padlock attached to the handle. Virtue approaches the door and analyzes the lock.*

Virtue: Stand back.

*The Stalkers comply and Virtue pulls out his sidearm. He shoots the lock, the sound echoing through the room. The room is deathly silent after the sound has passed. Virtue looks at the two excitedly as he slowly opens the door. It creaks open, revealing a dark hallway in front of them.*

Virtue: We’re close now.

*Virtue continues inside, his headlamp illuminating walls and dust particles in front of him. The halls are covered in a thick layer of dust and the air is thick with a musty smell. The Stalkers breath through their gasmasks slowly, wary of every sound coming from them.

They twist and turn through another series of halls, seeming like a labyrinth designed for rats. Finally, they enter a room at the end of one of the hallways. The room is filled with ancient-looking machinery. To the side of the room is another sealed door. A dim light shines underneath it. The Stalkers look at each other inquisitively.
Virtue walks slowly up to the door, putting his head against the door and listening intently. Suddenly, a look of satisfaction crosses his face. He whispers aloud to himself:*

Virtue: I found you, you motherfuckers…

*Virtue kicks open the door, the light of the room temporarily blinding them. They hold their hands above their eyes to shield them from the light. A voice comes from somewhere in front of them:*
