---QUOTATION--- Back into NS hibernation I suppose.
Those 90+ artifacts found in Pripyat didn't do me any good. In the process of shipping them out I had a CTD and tried reloading. No go on that, just CTD again. So I tried the autosave and that did the same. I worked back through a few, but they all failed. Seems something corrupted the whole thing.
I don't get as much time for the game as I used to, so a run or two through NS should last me a good 18 months or so. I'll come back and see if there's been any changes then.
After reading some of the threads in this section I think I missed a huge amount of stuff. A bit more guidance would be handy. I'm struggling to pick out a storyline - does still it have one?
.
It still has the storyline that was documented for the Lost Alpha which had a number of forks that were internally consistent.
There is also this embryonic "documents thread" that starts with the Night Raid in Cordon. Unfortunately, this terminates if you miss just one doc...
There's also much more action provided by Seriy (but don't do the Crow's Meat mission) who needs a twit rescuing on Forest.
There IS now provision to access the Rostok area BEFORE going to Agroprom if you wipe some infestations for the Warrant Officer. TBAH it isn't too hard, but does waste bandages and medkits early on. On the plus side - you can likely grab an Obokan off a dead Dutyer, a scope off the Barkeep, a Hunter Suit if you brave the Wilds - all on Day Two.
If you're a b***er for punishment, this sets you up nicely for the Ag, OR a hop skip and a jump for the goodies in Yantar by Day 2.5 which pretty much sets you for the whole early game if you bother to get Fox to supercharge your gear.
Kudos to the devs for making the Wild Territory more of a challenge.
Kudos too for importing gun and armour u/g paths that nearly work faultlessly.
Kudos for the reintroduction of the daft Skills Module that lets you pay for this junk.
But big big NEGS for the total lack of an updated manual and the absence of adequate play testing, which has resulted in the release of a more faulted product than the original LA v1.30013.
(One of the biggest - and probably insoluble - problems that I have is the gradual slowing down of the game as more 'stuff' gets stashed - usually in a car boot. CTDs when headshotting something I am wise to - "make a save before firing"
The end result of this 'rantlet' is that contrary to the assurances, protestations, expectations and "hopes" of various team members that the v1.4005 release will fix this and other trivial issues - and is expected to be released 'this week' - does INCREDIBLE damage to the public perception of the game.
At this stage a bit of honesty might go a long way with what remains of the game's fanbase. ---END QUOTATION---
This is all from 4.0.0.2
Why not do the Crow's Meat mission?
Who is "the warrant officer"?
I do headshots as much as possible and have had no problems.
The temporary freezes caused by my stashes are a bit annoying but it is more annoying that Sid does not reset his inventory which means a major freeze when ever I get close to the village in Cordon.
Only constant CTD or worse I have is if I forget to turn off nightvision before entering a transition point or doing a reload of a save.

Why not do the Crow's Meat mission?
Because, there's no map marker as to where to get it from; no hint as to how to get it; and substituting Rat Meat does not work. Basically, it's a waste of effort since the reward is RU500.
Who is "the warrant officer"?
Same twit that was ever at the gate between Garbage and the Bar:
THIS one in LA: [http://lost-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Warrant_Officer]
Or this one in SoC [http://stalker.wikia.com/wiki/Warrant_Officer_(Garbage)]
Same thing same modus operandi, pretty much.
I do headshots as much as possible and have had no problems.
Glad to hear that you're having more luck than me.

"Temporary Freezes." "Bit annoying." "Major freezes..when .."
Say WHAT again?? You are running a MUCH higher spec machine than me. If you too are seeing "Temporary Freezes." that are a "Bit annoying." then I posit that this is a system independent fault with the game engine. I desperately hope to be incorrect.

Yeah, we all forget to ditch the NV, or get stiffed while it's ON. It's a FAULT.
We suck it up - and move on.
Exploiting 1.4007 DC as best as I can. I will NEVER, EVER use a "cheat pack" - a game lives or dies on its gameboard. Best of luck, stalker...

So do I. (Btw, are you allways in such a good mood?)
Yesterday was a good day
The problem with the stashes is related to how the database for the stashes is made. The game engine is forced to count every single object (I don't know exactly how ammo is counted) in the stash and then update the stash before removing the next and doing something similar when adding to your inventory or to a stash. I have no idea if it can be fixed.
That would explain a lot. I had this vision that the engine is rendering the textures 'under the hood', when really, all that it ought to rely on is a database that eventually looks up an item on a need-to basis. I recall years ago that Dez mentioned that the "packet filler" or whatever that merges odd bits of ammo was taken out - which might also explain some quirky behaviour. Again, like yourself, I have no handle on how or whether it can be fixed.
I also have LA installed on a gaming laptop from 2009 running a i7 720QM, Radeon Mobility 5870 @1920*1080 and 8GB of RAM and running from a second HDD I installed. Naturally at lower settings than on my PC. It gets a good workout allready and I haven't left Cordon yet. Quite interesting if I can play all the way to the end but I expect having to lower the settings further.
I confess to envy. I'm running this in 4GB on an A10 5700. Mostly I have to use Static render with a pretty low detail level. Tends to look like I'm running my actor over a wooded golf course a lot of the time.. I did actually get quite a long way in one game in full DX render (still low res) which was a surprise, but then came the rub: going back to Static resulted in an eventual slowdown - probably as it was trying to re-render previously DX rendered stuff. Again, this looks like the engine doing peculiar things.
