The Best Laid Plans

Well, the Stalker website has finally sunk so low as to post my story! It's called The Best Laid Plans. Anybody who's interested can find the text here:

[link]http://www.stalker-game.com/df_community_contest_story_read.php?id=96[/link]

As I feared, the posting has completely screwed up the format, but all in all, it's still readable. All comments are welcome, both here and on the comments section of the website itself. be as frank and cold-blooded in your judgement as you want, all criticism is welcome. I guess it's a bit different then what most people would have come to expect reading in the fanfic section, but I hope you'll enjoy it. After all, that's why I wrote it.

Any objective rating would sure be welcome, as the webmasters or moderators or whoever haven't reacted at all to our pleads for a better rating system. So for now, we're still depending on it. (to be perfectly honest, I have little hope that rating will do any good. As soon as any story enters the top ten, the rating-wars break out.)

A big thank you in advance to all...

I liked it.

I really did feel like part of the environment while reading this; your efforts to describe all senses is well considered in drawing the reader in, and the description of being taken over by a Controller was prob the best I have seen yet ( the 'oozing' of it's being into the victim, like some kind of sour mucus, really made my skin crawl ).

Leonid made an interesting 'hero', on one hand you wanted him to succeed but you also knew that, despite the photograph, there was little chance of him ever finding an end to his quest so he would continue to be tortured by it. You think he's going to snap out of it in the end but another wave of denial just kicks in, and, for Leonid at least, it's as though none of the events even happened at all.

It's always difficult to go for characterisation and atmosphere over the tempting escape-hatch of blood and guns, so you really have my respect for that ( it's something I distanced myself from over the years as I used to just write non-stop action, now it's got to the extent where I find it difficult to write action at all, catch 22 eh? ).

Criticisms? Hmm, perhaps one or two lines of dialogue felt out of place, or too 'westernised', like "I'm lying I'm dying" and "a complete nutjob", but it can take an immense ammount of concentration and re-reads to realise that such things have slipped in at all. Apart from that everything was very tight indeed, maybe some would complain about the length but I found it to be about right, and the tension of the final scene was a more than adequate payoff.

You don't have to worry too much about the rating, all the stories are read by GSC. They are aware of the broken rating system. I suspect they will issue a statement in the future regarding the literary contest and the rating scheme.

this is true. Atem mailed me (although I was really puzzled why he did so- mentioning something about patience, though I haven't submitted my story?) and did said that GSC is reading our story, personally. Well, folks, the waiting is gone., literally. Basicly we are just like the French in WWII, waiting for D-Day to come, which was sweet liberation for them.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it too much... GSC seems to really listen to the fan community as a whole (thankyou guys!) and I'm sure that when they have time to fill us in on things, they will.

Incidentally, all the new stories just went down at least a point or more, haha - to be expected I suppose.
