Nice idea, hopefully this will demonstrate just how many people think the contest has lost all critical standing.

Only way for it to be fair is to have the same group of people rate each story. And those people have to be serious about this. Thats about the fairess you can get.

Actually, I had another idea for judging. Do the log-in judging thing, but with a maximum number of judges, say 100-500. None of these judges can have submitted stories because they will have lost impartiality. Then, the top 50 of the ones they voted on will be reviewed by the devs and from these 50, then top 10 will be chosen. I say to have the 50 first because, even if somehow, someone manages to cheat or something, if a story really is good, no matter how many cheaters put 1s on it, it should be in the top 50, and then the devs will be able to say, well this one is better, etc. even if it is the 50th one down.

Just another idea.

Sounds good to me, I particularly like the failsafe of a 'final fifty', so if someone did manage to manipulate the system the general quality of their entry wouldn't hold up under scrutiny. I can appreciate people like Amoki saying that we should wait and see what measures GSC impliment, but the fact of the matter is we're not in a communication loop here so we don't know if they consider it to be an issue of any importance - all we know is that Claws passed it onto them, but that's it.

Without wanting to sound overly dramatic, we only have a limited window of time to set things right here.

Thank you for starting this thread GSC needs to change the contest .

GSC should accept all the stories and then judge them and then annouce the winners.
It's that simple.

When Freelancer had a contest my wife and I sent in our writing in and it was
judged by Freelance or someone. We lost but but it was fun and we felt that
the contest was fair.

The Devs do NOT have the time

Unfortunately, in trying to meet certain deadlines, for the Devs to set aside time to reading ALL of the stories is unrealistic. That isn't to say that the current system doesn't seem somewhat flawed.

Actually, I did have an idea and I did post it to GSC Game World. Two ideas actually. One is the log-in voting which I took from here. But the other one... folks, you are going to like this.

Apparently, almost everyone who joined this contest is driven by the hopes of winning this game ( anyone disagree with me.) In such events, a lot of people were 'forced' to cheat their way in OR a lot of jerks did not like those top-ten quality story and put lots of '1' bu abusing the current system of voting. Now, my idea is to find 10-20 'incorruptables'. these folks actually help to judge the contests, and they give the absolute votes. These incorruptables have to read through the contest entries one by one, and give their votes using a complete system of marking i.e style, language, plot... important aspects, you know ( I don't want my English Teacher to do it! ) and give comments and suggestions to the contest particpants. But the only disadvantage is that these people are excluded from the contest itself to avoid giving a '10' to their own work.

And the catch? a signed Stalker game from the dev's.

This system is actually practical, since the Dev's had no time to redesign the webpage or to assign staff to take care of the problem. This system let the fans of STALKER to take care of the problem for them ( at the same time save them a lot of problem!) and at the same time make sure the contest is judged fairly, because these judges no longer have any agendas behind voting. The relatively few problem the devs had to face is 1) how to deal with THQ for the other CDs and 2) buy lots of pens and medicine so that their hands don't ache from the signing )

The only thing they have to do is finding the right person, and I believe the candidates are already here at the forum with folks like Ian C, Grisly Silence and Goodspeed

So folks, what do you say? (bear in mind this is already suggested to GSC, and the stories had not been uploaded for a long, long time!)

I like that idea. But while Ian_C, Goodspeed and I may be good candidates for being incorruptibles (nice of you to include me in that group), we are already corrupted by having our stories submitted. While I would like to say that I could be impartial, and I might be able to on some stories, the problem is that realistically I am not. I have already submitted my story, and like it or not, I'm probably going to be unconciously comparing other stories to my own work, instead of judging them on their own merits. I imagine that anyone who has submitted a story, if they really think hard on it, will realize they will do the same. It's simply natural to do so.

Now we just need to find 10 people who would be good judges. I'm not sure any of us Stalker fans would be good for that and for one reason only. Say a single person gets in who is one of the cheaters. That could turn out bad. While the mistakes such a person could make can be corrected, that would be time-consuming. There has to be a way to find people who have no interest whatsoever on how the contest turns out.

Anybody have any ideas on how to do this?

nah, everyone here does compare their work with the others ( this is going to be quite a little bit complicated: if you didn't submit your work, how do you know the system is flawed, and if you didn't know the system is flawed, how would you be posting here? ), including me. The important thing is to be objective and fair and give your ratings using your head and rationality, not your feelings about the work whether they are better then yours or not.

But hey, just another idea. I don't even know if the Dev's really care.
