about killziq's request common flaws in the story

When killziq requested me to name my own top ten story, I already had a few in mind. But before I reply, an awful realisation struck me. If I really posted that up, everyone would be seeing those that I recommended. It will be grossly unfair to the other 110 stories. Yep, even I have read most of the contest story myself in the last two years, most of the stories in what I had in mind was those who were popular or active inside here, so it could easily be seen as a bias.

and so, I started to reread every story

After I spent about 1 week, I was beginnig to feel frustrated. Almost 80% of the story was so boring that I had to force myself to read them. Not that I had felt myself being one step higher then them, like I am better or something like that. No. I tried to become an ordinary reader who is not constricted to the small words in the webpage (everyone in the forum long enough knows my method of reading the stories now). The 80% stories was either about revenge, or how cool killing someone was, some nutcase who seeem to have reaction fast enough to put headshot with a rifle like it was an MP5 or Uzi, or how dreadful their (the writer's character) was in the Zone.

I had no interests in that.

I don't know if there is any difference between me and the rest of the readers, but there was even some stories in the 80% that was suprisingly are part of the top ten. Maybe I had lost touch with how stories of the contest are suppose to be written. Yah, maybe I have been inside this contest for too long to know how a Good contest story or literature should look like.

Or maybe I have not. When I read stories like "The best laid plans" and "Elena Rudneva" That are hardly in the top ten, but I knew I had not lost my touch. Those were really good stories, yet because maybe because the writer isn't such a popular guy in school their votes were non-parelel to their quality. The contest was really horribly unfair to many people. So I feel my duty now is to look for really good story so the others here can appreciate them, but that will take another week of intense reading again.

So, sorry killziq. I cannot give you your answer yet.

Onto the common flaws part that I have seen so far.
1)geography. Somehow, Ukraine was still part of Russia. Which was a very serious flaw. Ukraine was already independant at 24th August 1991. Somehow at 2011 Ukraine fell into the embrace of Russia? The Ghost did not succeed in 2008 ?(just a joke)
2) Guns. A lot of American seems to be smuggled into Ukraine. There are even Barret and OICW inside the Zone...
3) I never knew that stalkers are emotionless killing machine. Most of them had no feelings, but somehow they could kill life they were just released from asylum. What I meant was that their charcter had the bloodlust of a serial criminal, the mind and conscience of an animal, and the like. A good story consisted of character who could be understand. No one is just a man- everyone have a family, a background, an identity.
4) Government. Ukraine is an independant republic now. SO STOP USING RUSSIA AND SOVIET UNION!
5) Does the authors ever ran before?I am about 108& overweight and do run occasionally. I only managed, at the best, 12 inutes before I start panting a lot and had to stop. But some of this authors actually created character that could ran for half-an-hour and more. Wow.
6) And there are some story actually have characters who seem to have Alzheimer. Somehow, they forgot about the name they was born with and had been using for a damn long time. How do they forget? Radiation?

There's more, but I don't fell like spilling out my guts. Of course, like what Nauris Klaus had said before, most of the contest entree are people who are just amateur. And A lot of stories too reminded me of the stories I had written when I started. Yet even I had did research of some sort when I write. They don't. Why? Why is doing something as simple as research on little things are harder then chatting in mIRC? You are not researching on something as secret as an arm-smugling route, or how do we constuct a nuclear reactor. Just some simple research, and the quality of the story would go up. But no.

What do you guys have to say?

story quality

I did not become aware of the contest until this past December. Before I wrote my stories, I attempted to read all the stories to see what kind of stories were being written. This proved to be a tedious, painful process. At first I thought that maybe it was because of the age of the writers or the fact that many of them were not primarily English speakers. But that proved not to be the case. There are some good stories from both types of writers. What I think it really comes down to is the difference between those who entered mainly for a shot at fame and those who have a genuine interest in writing. My own stories have not been posted on the game site yet. Although, my son (the oath) has posted them on this forum. In hind sight I suspect that they may be considered too bland compared to the violent action of many of the stories. I don't envy the person who has to wade through all of these stories and make a decision. Good luck on your own attempt to do so.

In fact, violence is not a problem to me. I find making a story/book/essay is somewhat like cooking rice. Too much water, and the rice is to soft. Too less water, and the rice is hard. Similarly, in STALKER stories, too much violent, and it spoiled the story (tell me about it :l ) but the lack of violence in the story is somewhat unacceptable too, unless the "The Zone" element is still in.

And speaking of your story, I forgot to read yours (smack myself in the head. "Damn, what have you been doing all this while in the forum?" But I'll make sure that I will read it yourself, and to add that I am a little to bewildered by violence after wading through all the stories, yours might just be the treat I have beem waiting for.

*Guys, check out "The Eye" by WIFI. although its rating is at the bottom of the 120 stories (and the quality is absolutely poor), I manage to find it entertaining. Wait, entertaining is not the word. It is the only piece of story that make me laugh (in the good sense that is),

Each word should be at least 3 characters long.
