Some sort of weapon degradation system would be nice - such is implemented in System Shock 2 and Boiling Point to name a couple.
But perhaps for STALKER a nice and realistic variation on the theme would be simply more frequent jamming as more rounds are fired (talking a fair few too - 200 rounds before any noticeable degradation occurs) - and the correction action is to clean the weapon, which would take time so would necessitate choosing appropriate time and location to perform. Maybe accuracy degradation as well as jamming tho that's not really very realistic.
If caught out and weapon becomes useless in combat you'd be forced to pick up other weapons possibly without upgrades/improvements of the original one and themselves at various levels of condition. You could dump the original but retrieve it later to clean it and get it going again etc. - would add an interesting dimension I think. And if AI had the same issues it could be interesting.
LOL!! Have you never had your weapon jam yet??? and have had to reload in the middle of a gun fight with some guy shotting at you AFTER you've shown yourself. It's tough. Geez you must have horseshoes in this game to never have had that happen...
