There's a lot of space tha'ts not being used in the game. Look for my topic 'a very interesting bug' for some screenshots.. 100 rad bar was supposed to be HUGE. At least twice the size it is now and it was even meant to incorporate some of the 'wild territory' ... .

Funnily this morning i was going from the garbage to bar area and decided to jump over the fence at the very start of the bar map.

The land around the bar map is enormous its just roads and countryside shaped out but to me it looks like the developers originally intention of making one big map was almost done. the roads have a path to line-up with the next areas.

If you look at your PDA while in this part of the map you can get right up to the edge of the next map areas.

You can see how ive mapped out l05 the bar level
The white line is the very edge of the map
Inside the green line is the Playable area of the bar map.
Id guess the playable area is less than 2% of the bar maps total area.

Ill say my opinion again the developers should totally rebuild the entire zone as a continuous free roaming / no load screen map, with much more detail like oblivion. This ofcourse would mean everybody losses save games but not one person would mind.

At the moment its just a very linear, funnel map.

Thanks

So then maybe there is still hope they can fix the map? If it's sort of set up already just a HUGE amount of patching would fix it? Hmmm, I really hope they will fix it

but Im not buying any expansion pack for the game, I dont feel I should have to pay more money to get what was originally promised. I know I've said that before but still.

good work on finding that though, I hope with patching they can fix the map up

WTF? my only question is why did the devs cut such a massive section out?

the sheer scale of this map alone proves that xray is able to handle an expansive non linear game and after oblivion, this shouldve been an obvious choice. the a-life could finally be used to its full potential with an area this size.

seems like a very stupid move on GSC's part, stalker looked immense in 2005 and even needed vehicles to traverse the zone but it just looks like GSC has been cutting and cutting.

stalker is still an exeptional game but now it couldve been so much more

They cut a hell of a lot out, but my question is...why? Why make it all..do the work..then just cut it out?

if they kept doing that, no wonder it took 6 years

My guess is the entire land surface was carved out as one big file then carved up into blocks, probably for each level designer to work on simultaneously.

I did the same with Yantar and its size lines up with the edge of the bar map their isn’t any noticeable overlap or shortage,

I also (after about 3hours ) managed to jump out of the wild territory map the map looks to be the same base as the bar map its certainly the same size.

I’m sure when making a game the map would be one of the last parts to be built because its entire design depends on the game, engine, characters, objects. The time constraint must have been hurting here more than anywhere else.

I’ve only made conventional maps in UT so I don’t have a clue how a world like oblivion would work. Id imagine it being a grid of medium maps each lining up and when you walk into one the surrounding maps are loaded like a bubble around the player.

Like this, when the player moves in a direction the bubble of loaded maps can move with him.

lol almost like Micheal Jackson's-Billie Jean music video where the pavement lights up as he walks on it. [link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOlsDg_rDSI[/link]

Very good Adrian, now I have yet to see any devs or mods post a single thing in these forums..I do hope they are looking at all this stuff.

but my question is, who here actually thinks it would be possible at this point in the game to fix the map? I think it would involve far too much work and the patch would be a gig or more.

Well I don’t think in a patch it would be quite that big, the big files like textures and sounds are already on your install DVD. Map files are normally never contain textures so are not very big. Even if it was that big it would be worth it.

I think the developers are reading the forums, and do want to make the map free roaming exactly as we have discussed, and as they originally planned. It wont be an easy task but it would be worth the effort and I think its very possible.

I don’t think it would be a map fix though in effect it would be a different new map you would loose saved games but no one would mind because of the enormous gameplay benefit.
