That oh-so elusive gun bob effect...

You know what I'm talking about, how your gun moved up and down when running in the old trailers like this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35YJrjGZN4g

I found it curious that it's missing from all of the "old stalker" mods being released lately, so I am determined to know why was it cut in the first place? Why is it so hard to restore? And how can I restore it? My only clue is I figure it's somewhere in the game dll's.

Couldn't it be part of the weapons animation? I don't know, but now that you bring it up and I look at guns ingame now, I really notice how the bobbing is 'missing' :/

See, I'm not sure it's just an animation added to the weapon. There are mods that have restored old animations and weapons mods from builds but the bob is not restored as well.

I think it was something like an effector, like the way the camera moves when walking, but it was part of xrGame.dll or one of the bin files, and was cut out of the game dlls.

I bet it's in xrGame.dll too, but as i remember I didn't see any public binary updater dif file with this feature.

If you seen this in a mod, maybe someone has this dif file at home, for a specific version of xrGame.dll.

The only place I have seen this is in the old builds, and in a Lost Alpha preview video. I don't know how they restored it, weather through dll's, the source code which they have access to, or if its just animations. But good luck getting anyone from the LA team to share.

Well atleast the LA engine mods will hopefully work with most other mods as well, which is gonna be great.

the investigation continues...

I took a few minutes to poke around xrGame.dll with a hex editor and haven't found anything so far.

But I did see these:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAPt2CuKUy0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgFfPE1y1Gk

For a mod called Phantoms Zone, this guy did it, I want to know how.
I also found out about something called x-ray extensions:
http://stalker-2.info/files/more/zp-x-ray-extensions.html

Adding some new features for x-ray, mostly test related stuff I think. Does anyone know anything further about Phantoms Zone?

X-ray extensions doesn't seem to bring that many visual stuff, if any... not to mention it's for COP.

Phantom Zone isn't released yet.

X-ray extensions are for all 3 games - SOC, CS and COP:

http://xray-extensions.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/

There are some public pack out with binary enhancements, you can patch your xrGame.dll files to get some extra feature (no weapon sway among the features):

http://www.moddb.com/mods/cut-x-ray-project-soc-cs-cop/downloads

The developers are Skyloader (works for LA at the moment) and rus_phantom (maybe he is the author of Phantoms Zone). Both mod has weapon sway/swinging, and i doubt that you can get this feature before these mods come out.

Well I'm stumped I've been digging through files and dlls with a hex editor and have gotten nowhere. I wish I could talk to some of these modders but I don't know Russian. And I know dezowave doesn't like sharing.

It will not work, but you can always make mods for LA, it will be a good base for modding with the updated sdk we plan to release with it.

phantoms zone created this effect with animations, just like in clear sky or call of pripyat. anyone with modelling skills can do similar, or even the same as the old was.

in lost alpha we use the old method, however we had to rewrite the code for it, because it was completely removed from the engine in the end of 2005... so thats why you dont find anything about it in the dll-s.

Well, thanks for the explanation.

It was a really dumb idea to remove it.

That oh-so elusive gun bob effect...

Several years ago when more people first got the Game there were many
Posts from Players crying that the head and gun bob made them sick and
they wanted help on removing it. I always felt unsympathetic about their
whining thinking that maybe they should just be playing Hello Kitty instead.

How did I miss this thread before? It aligns perfectly with my puzzlement over the lack of walking animations for weapons in SOC. (Plus walking AND sprinting animations for bolts, binoculars, and the knife.) The old alpha walking animations weren't very good, but they were better than shipping a final product with an animation missing from every weapon.

Who knows, maybe the overexaggerated head sway that made it look like Marked One waddled his way through the zone was supposed to simulate it or something. EDIT: Actually, looking at an old video of mine from the vanilla (plus Float32) game, it actually kind of does mask the lack of animation.

The head bobbing is separate from the gun bobbing, which is not in the retail game. The gun bobbing is the focus of this discussion, but I can't let your remark pass without comment, Tejas Stalker.

I happen to be one of those (might be due to age) who suffers from severe nausea after playing some games for a short while. There are two main causes: response lag (the screen motion is behind the mouse movement) and this artificial head bobbing to simulate motion. (There is also the inertial simulation in STALKER, set mainly by cam_inert and defaulting badly to 0.7 when the game reconstructs user.ltx, but this contributor is easily squelched via the console.)

STALKER has very little response lag. (Monolith games were the worst at this; I could only play as Kate Archer for maybe 20 minutes at a time.)

But the unrealistic penguin waddle is overly exaggerated in STALKER, and unlike western games you can't turn it off or reduce it without modding.

Tilt your head from left to right and back again while looking at the screen and note that your brain keeps your view upright. Glance off to the side and repeat the headbob. Same thing. Walk or run. The orientation of your point of view does not tilt and your focal point does not change with the motion despite the changes in the periphery of the view frame.

Hold up a sheet of paper (imaginary is fine) with a hand on each side. Now rock it up/down, move it side to side, bounce it around as if you were walking -- but keep the top and bottom parallel to the horizon. That's the way to simulate motion in a video game.

Now rotate the paper back and forth as if it were a steering wheel in a car. That is NOT the way to simulate motion, but that's the major component of the STALKER way.

Move my gun on screen, make me bounce up and down and even sway me from side to side while keeping what I look at in the center of the screen, but do not rotate the screen around my focal point except to simulate vodka consumption or controller influence.

The fact that you are unsympathetic with those who are "differently abled" (as I am) is disappointing, even if you just said it for effect. I hope you understand that I'm just as entitled to my opinion as you are to yours. I'll add that if I had not been able to change the head bobbing, I would not be a player of the game, and forget being a member of this forum.

I know this thread is OLD.
But can someone from Dezowave team show how to reproduce the code for Gun Bob?? Atleast send us the
xrGame.dif file so we can use it as part of Xray Cut Project mod.
You know the mod that adds special patcher which puts .dif file into .dll .

Got something for ya.
In mod downloads there is a new mod called gunbob made by MonoLityczny.
It adds gunbob, but with it serious weapon sway.
