How to increase shadow resolution?

Hello! For years, one of my biggest and only problems with SoC is its very poor shadows. Upclose they are acceptable but not great, but 15m away from you, they use a very low resolution and look very bad. This also creates a pop-in effect that makes the game look ugly.

Some mods seem to get around this problem, but I don't know how. I have tried -smap but it makes no difference. I have also tried the modified shaders which explicitly support larger shadow map resolutions, but these still have small draw distance problems, and introduce shadowbanding too.

Lost Alpha in contrast has beautiful, crisp, amazing shadows that neither pop-in nor use a smaller resolution in distances.

Is there a way to get better shadow draw distances and resolutions that I have not found? Thank you!

Hi,

The -smap flag on the exe shortcut works for me. Even though the quality is still debattable over FPS reduction, it does make the shadows more accurate.

flags:
-smap512
-smap1024
-smap2048
-smap4096

Other values which are power of 2 might work too.

The quality of shadows can also be affected by the user.ltx

Try experimenting with different values for "r2_sun_near"
- it affects the shadow draw distance. It doesn't work very well, though.

Setting "r2_sun_near_border" to 1 or more than 1 also fixes the famous SHOC shadow glitch.

I have tried these but they make no difference for me and for others Can you take pictures of shadows with the different settings, so I can see if mine look like any of those?

I believe the default value of the game is 1024. I could be wrong though.

As AEI mentionned, user.ltx settings might have an effect. Here's mine:
r2_sun_near 20.
r2_sun_near_border 1.

Thanks for the comparison. I do see a difference there, but I guess the -smap doesn't affect the shadows in the same way I was hoping, namely, the draw distance. I will have to experiment with the settings some more.

I asked about Lost Alpha's but was told the only way to get such shadows would be to port the mod I am playing into Lost Alpha... :/

I cannot get the 2.0 CTP to merge with NS mod with OP-2. I have tried a few times, but I do not think it is worth the effort. I have tried the many shaders based on sky and none of them increase the shadow resolution either--in fact distance shadows have often looked worse! and their pop-in and shadow banding increases.

edit:

played around with the r2_sun_near and that did the exact trick for me thanks for the help, everyone!

You never mentioned in your OP what other mods you were using. Did you expect people to just assume, or to automatically know or some such....

I didn't mention it because the issue persists in vanilla and in other mods, and so is a general question, not a mod-specific one. Just as if I had asked what the glossfactor line does.
