End Game

This may or may not constitute a happy ending for the contest, but for me, I'm just glad the loose end has been tied, and my respondsibility fulfilled.

24 hours ago, I was contacted by GSC. They wanted a list of 11 contestants that, to my opinion, deserve to win the contest.

This list has now been completed, and submitted to GSC. The list will now be in the official site - either that, or it is in the process of being put up.

I realise the result can be biased. I admit that choosing the top 11 was a loaded task in the first place, when most of the authors had chosen to immerse themselves in this forum and in STALKER. I have come to know most of them personally. But I had tried my best to be impartial. And unfortunately, you can't please everybody in life.

The winners were chosen based on the quality of the story/stories that they have submitted, and also the effort they have put behind each story that they had. I am sure most of the forum members who still care will agree with the list of names that I have chosen as the winners of this contest. Most of them have plot coming close to the theme of STALKER. But I have also not forgotten to take note of those who had put significant effort behind their stories.

If anyone feels that the result is very biased, feel free to discuss in this forum, but make sure you have a good reason to challenge my decision.

Last but not less, I thank GSC for giving this contest a go in the first place... and that they had not forgotten about the contest even though they could have done so.

Amoki, out.

Perhaps it's fateful that I took the time today to visit the good ol' Stalker homepage (I've been hearing lots of nice things about it, except from people who own Vista, but who upgrades an OS within months of the OS's fresh release?).

It's nice to see Ian_C and Goodspeed on there (...along with Amos Chua, how'd that ever get up there? ). Coincidentally my name was spelled wrong in both the English and Russian news posts, which is just, as someone from the 70s might put it, "whack". Maybe I shouldn't rely on obscure latin adjectives to form the basis for half of my name. Unless I'm just totally off, and someone snuck in with a nearly identical name while I wasn't looking.

I do have one question though, did you pick the Russian winners too, amoki? I just assumed they'd easily pick someone in-house to judge those, but there seems to be an abundance of non-cyrillic/Russian names on there (...9 to 17 on my count for the stories, although I'm sure some of the 17 are also Russian/Ukranian/etc.). Never really figured you for a Russian speaker, but then again I didn't really ask, did I? Quizically, my story is also not to be found in the literature section on the site; maybe it would steal all their bandwidth with its enormous size...

Anyway, woot for writing your stories everyone, lots of decent and fun literature in there. A quote for the times:

"I discovered that rejections are not altogether a bad thing. They teach a writer to rely on his own judgment and to say in his heart of hearts, 'To hell with you'."
- Saul Bellow, 1976 winner of the Nobel prize in literature

Off-topic to the contest results, but...

I knew I recognized your name from one of those stories I read, but looking back through your forum posts, you never finished Derelict. You can't just tie people up and forget about them...well, I suppose you can, but you probably shouldn't .

Well, I posted a revised chapter, and no one responded, so I didn't think there was much interest in it. I forgot most of the plot anyway. Thanks for the interest, though.

Matt, max has your correct detail. Stick with your Yahoo account and you should be right.

And yeah, I was given the prize because of my work with the administration of the contest. Heh
