LA DC 1.4007 late start playthrough

I had asked for help getting 1.3 something running on my new computer and Tejas Stalker pointed me to this newest and bug free (so far) version.

I am about 5 game days in, taking things fairly slowly and not really trying to max out anything.

Here is my loadout:

A few days in I had about 10k rubles and decided to buy a BP-a Cobra Merc Suit. I do my best to avoid other forms of damage so gunfire was my main concern and that was the cheapest and best option that Sid had in stock.

When I got to the technician in the train tunnel at Agroprom, he said my suit was too damaged to repair. Well...

Soon after that I found Strelok's hideout and the Stalker Jacket, so on it went and I dropped the Merc Suit. In its condition, the Merc Suit gave less protection at that point.

Mossberg Maverick 88: I only upgraded to a larger tube for 7 shells instead of 5. Slow firing rate though.

AKS-74: Upgrades are scope mount, handling and accuracy.

Walther P99: upgrades are extended mag capacity (22 rounds) and reliability.

Binocluars were found and I am still rocking the homemade detector.

The only thing I bought was the gas mask.

No nightvision, only a flashlight!

On to Swamp

Traveling from Yantar to Swamps now.

Changes are - Franchi SPAS-13 (Franchi?)

SG-550 found in perfect condition, no ammo of course!

Tourists Suit given for recovering the rifle from the Bloodsucker lair in Agroprom underground.

Vepr-12. Basically a 12 gauge AK-47. I have not seen this in game before. I need to get it repaired and see how well it shoots.

Where is the upgrade for bayonet mount?

Merc Suit and repairs

Maybe I should have held on to that Merc Suit.

I went to Professor Kruglov for repairs and he is very expensive, so I used a Guide to return to Cordon only to have Fox tell me the Vepr-12 is too damaged to repair.

I didn't realize the technicians were at different skill levels, so to speak.

I really don't want to pay 12, 300 rubles to have it fixed but I guess I will.

This 12 gauge AK better be as badass as it sounds.

Petrenko is referring to the previously guarded storeroom above the 100 Rads.

You used to be able to "pull crap through the door" in early releases but that doesn't work anymore.

It gets unlocked after the heli attack is resolved.

5 days in? Looking at your load out I don't even feel like we're playing the same Mod. I didn't know a Gauss Gun was available that early. You already have not just one but two scopes. Met a Burer, an Izlom and a Controller. You're certainly moving at light speed compared to me.

Nah, it reopens for you after the "Helis are dead". After the Scorcher is off Petrenko moves back to replace Barkeep and a few Duty patrons take up permanent residence.

The storeroom is now absent of a guard and can be looted.

As TM5000 has noticed, Kebab Boris sticks around. For me he goes all silent, but I suspect he's supposed to be connected in some way to Paulie the Stewpid.

Don't know of anyone who has ever resolved the "Missing Fellow" (previously known as "A Friend of Seriy" mission in its entirety. There was a time in 1.4002 that the Countryside Major had a similar "Find a Friend" mission that almost could be completed.

That part just doesn't seem to spawn in 1.4007.

You have to love it when nascent plot additions just get cut with no word or hint in the release notes.

In earlier versions of LA, the Bar was locked and never opened again. I complained. Good to see it isn't, at the very least to recover anything in the blue chest. However I found the whole plot and storyline of moving everyone to the desolate and unfriendly location in the Pripyat Outskirts to be contrived, illogical and unfortunate.

Maybe Boris was waiting for the Player to be killed so he could bribe the choppers to take him back to Russia.

Thanks for the load out screenshots. A few artifacts I don't recognize and have no idea what they do. Personally I would cut way back on carrying so many and load up more ammo and a third back-up weapon like a submachine gun. But that's just me.

Oh, it was a bit of a special case example while I poked around in Forest in Freeplay. Finding electro artys is pretty fraught and this is the only instance where I was packing them to 'safely' explore the Oasis feature. Ordinarily I'd just stash them in the GMF Hangar green box.

What I do like to do is carry "rupture" "impact" and "bulletproof" sets as routine. "Telepathy" "chemburn" and "burn" also have good uses so I prefer to have them reasonably available just for tactical.

With rupture on no snork or bloodsucker can damage me. But it gets a bit tedious with the knife, so last game I tried a rup / chem combo, stood in a strategic Witches Jelly and let them come to me. And die. And spawn artys.

That's what rocks about LA. EVERYONE here has their own strategy. ALL of them work. For me 8-15kg of inventory rocks are better than a third gun and a shedload of ammo or a battle armour.

Kill the zombies mission

I cannot complete this mission even after combing the entire map and killing every zombie I could find.

The LA Wiki calls it "Kill the Radar zombies" and it is not exactly the mission I have. Wiki says one day, my PDA gives me 7 to complete it.

The in-game charge is the same though.

Sakharov says, "Please, get rid of this ugly undead, because of them my research team with Kruglov can't explore the underground areas of this soviet radar facility nearby."

What gives?

I went back through the underground to check the spot with the map marker and it is definitely on ground level as it turns to a blip when I am underground. No zombies in that spot either.

I killed every zombie I could find while down there, and more on the surface too.

Just for v1.4007 ALL of the side missions seem to have a week instead of a day to complete (or fail) - more dev mischief.

It used to be that Sakharov would reissue the mission a second time and you could not recomplete it because you already had done it, been paid, etc.

There's usually only 3 or 4 zombies. They are all above ground, and if you hang out near the electro anomalies nearby you can get them to fry in them. They just approach and go 'bug zap'...

There is the problem: I have already done this mission once.

I emerged from the Yantar underground inside the building within the radar area. Rounded a corner and there were 4 Military around a fire barrel- and none reacted to me!

I though they must me neutral-hostile, so I poked around the building some. But, when I left through the front gate, the guard yells, "Stalker" and opens up on me and I can hear all the Military guys are hostile now.

Went to a previous save and jumped the fence to exit.

I also found a Mossberg shotgun down there. Not only was it in perfect condition, it had all first tier upgrades!

I didn't realize that was a FreePlay loadout. Of course that's a great idea to go back to mutant or anomaly avoided areas to explore and harvest any missed artifacts and other objects. I just wrongly assumed that was a Game Play loadout, once you got some good arties past mid-game. That's why I was touting the need for an additional weapon and more ammo.

There's nothing more frustrating than entering a new level and meeting overwhelming enemy forces and/or excessive mutant attacks and having your limited weapons wearing down too much or not having the ammo to sustain field operations. I've probably mentioned before I like to enter a new level fully loaded down with supplies and ammo and find LA frustrating for the lack of immediately findable stashes to off-load and operate from.

I pretty much had this loadout by day nine.
It's misleading, because I had all of these weirdo electro artys on to dig around the Oasis in this screenshot.

Normally, running ANYWHERE with 'impact' / 'rupture' invulnerability solves 90-95% of MUTANT problems (exceptions being Controllers and Pyrogeists)

That accounts for some 65-75% of gross combat events.
Around 20-25% require a shootout. No biggie.

The rest, with a few specialized exceptions, is a mopping up exercise.

But here's the rub.
It took me 4 games to figure out what TFF these artys were up to in this incarnation of LADC.

Another 6 months to write it up for reference with comparatives over the versions (I still play 1.4002 on and off)

Next game (if ever) I'll stock some daft "explosion" artys and have it out with the Monolith rocket boyz at the NPP. Maybe..

Until then I'm quite content to exploit the devs' creation using their own board and resources. It's fun.

ANYWHERE you get to you make a strategic "loot drop".

I had already completed that mission once and received it again, hoping to get paid again.

ByteMe mentioned that the mission can be offered again but will not resolve, which is what happened.

Sound effects

Back in the Yantar underground to get into the Military occupied building again.

I decided to go back into the area previously infested with Bloodsuckers.

My screen goes black, there is a Doctor Who style sound effect and I am transported back to the previous room.

So I try again, see hallucinations indicative of a Controller nearby but continue inward.

Just as the Controller walks out of the side passage and I am closing with him, the black screen happens again, along with the 'teleportation'.

Now it is just annoying. Am I not supposed to be in there?

I don't understand what the Devs have done done here.

I found this storeroom. Not sure if I had tried that particular door before.

The Heavy Tourist Suit is coming in handy as Ghost's Suit I am currently wearing (upgraded) is in need of repair.

BTW: I am still using the stash box in the old bar to hold resupply items. Will this become unavailable again at a later time?

The scream-jump parlor trick was a later addition to LA to prevent the Player from using the side passage out of the Brain Vat that leads to an L-shaped hallway and a set of stairs leading directly up to a walled compound above the Brain Vat.

If you come that way, the idea is to prevent you from approaching the Bloodsucker Lair from the wrong side. It jumps the Player to the other side of them to the empty shelf storage room. From there you have three choices to exit it. You can go west to a hallway that ramps upward and to a tight set of stairs leading to another hall where the broken elevator is. Inside of it is a ladder going to the surface and inside the middle of the abandoned Military Base. You may still have some soldiers there or not.

Go south and it leads you to multiple winding passages that eventually go north and west to a large room where a vehicle lift can move a BTR-70 to the surface at another deserted walled compound and beyond that the underground train station that has an exit just outside the Mobile Lab and Zombie infested Helicopter compound.

East of the Storage room has a short winding passage that leads to a room with a broken ceiling and half the room filled with desks that are shoved up against each other. The open end of this room is the Bloodsucker Lair. Once you vanquish them you come back to the other opening of the Brain Vat Room. Attempt to explore it will scream-jump you back to the same start point. You have to return to Sakharov for equipment that allows you to return and for the scream-jump scenario to disappear.

I found this storeroom. Not sure if I had tried that particular door before.

If you snagged the Heavy tourist suit then the Bar is "re-opened" and stays that way forever.

There are a couple of less risky stashes nearby if you ever want to spread the risk ("Per say's" backpack and that green stashbox in a hangar, not forgetting the dynamite box outside Voronin's office)

The HTS is quite handy.

I just saw you called Monolith 'Mononutz' on the Wiki in X18 comments.

Made me laugh out loud.

When going for X18, there was one yellow dot on my map. Found it was a Monolith sniper on the roof. I do believe this is the first time I have spoken to a Mono without high lead content. Creepy bastards.

Disadvantage of using the stash box in the Bar is it isn't accessible from the time of the raid until after the helicopter mission is completed successfully.

Once it reopens it's still a long way to go when hauling or retrieving gear. Especially when there's a stash box in the hanger/garage area (where that ?thing? is hanging from the ceiling) which is the storage container closest to the gate. Have seen the occasional Flesh running around inside the gate, but can't remember ever seeing one in that garage.

If climbing up on the boxes to get close to it, you start taking Rads. It can be accessed from the floor level or standing on the couch.

There's a special can of gas nearby. Easily stashed in the box until needed, though if remembering correctly, there is another found late in the game.

Aside, exploring just beyond the stairway down into the Bar has proven beneficial from time to time, mainly early on.

If planning on using Petrenko for trading gear (using the Balanced Economy mod, he pays better than Sidorovich for weapons in good condition) don't break into his safe in his former office. Though dong so is as easy as 1 2 3.

Just me venting my the sound of it.

I conclude from your yellow dot note that you DID pay 10000 to the contact.
It isn't obligatory but it keeps the Monos neutral. Makes it easier to see Mil from Mono.
Otherwise, if you steal the doc under the CO's nose, they go "hostile/neutral" and both factions are red.

But the red Monos will remain neutral if you don't shoot one.
You pretty much need to retire all Mils which you sound to have done.

But don't worry, the sniper will go full hostile when you fall out with the Bandits later on...

I have not looked into the game files in Lost Alpha, but in the SOC files, there is a timer where you set the time limit on the task, and a timer when the task is available again. the last timer should be longer than the time to complete the task.

So if the task must be completed in 5 days, the other timer should be set to 6 or 7 days. I think that is how it is supposed to be.

Here is an example from the task_manager from Priboi Story Overhaul:

time = 259200
idle_time = 950400

Time is the the time to complete, and idle_time is the time before the task is available again.

Windows update bullshit

I should have known from past experiences not to allow an update but...

Anyway, Windows updated last night as I slept and now LA will not run.

The Configurator looks like it is starting, then vanishes. No message, nothing.

I have tried compatibility mode for 7, 8, 10, XP and it does the same thing.

Looking at undoing the update if possible.

Any other solutions?

Windows update bullshit

LA 1.3 runs fine. The only other game I play, Neverwinter Nights, runs fine also.

My security update seems to have created a problem with the Configurator, which continues to vanish without explanation.

After uninstalling the Windows update, I get the same result: no Zone.

The icon has a little Windows Defender shield superimposed on it now.

Is there a way to command Windows to run it? It won't even run in Admin mode.

Probably, you go to Control Center - find WD there somewhere, and give it a good talking to.

Just a guess mind. I turned that abortion off years ago on XP on the basis that:

a) It's MY comp.
b) I do not take kindly to MSCorp's unsolicited "solutions".
c) I run an AV suite anyway and that should be sufficient.

Countdown to oblivion

While my current Windows version is allowing me to traverse the Zone, I though I would post an update.

Bloodsuckers. Not Microsoft this time.

Cleared them out of the Construction Site, gassed building and X14.

Took documents all the way to the Sin hideout, where I was given the code to X18. (?) I have already cleaned that place out.

Found a smoking car which I drove until it ran out of gas about halfway through Darkscape, going north.

Almost hid from a Military patrol among some rocks. They made a U-turn, crossed the road and... it didn't end well for them.

Same weapons/equipment as before, except I upgraded the homemade detector for more range.

Stay tuned for a Windows Update blowout! <00:45>

You're not taking crazy pills and it's not limited to OS u/ds.
(Fortunately for me, I run an OS that doesn't get these annoying "updates" any more)
But then "terms of service" get updated, and things like your web browser lose functionality.
Don't get me started on search engines.

Maybe MSCorp have a new OS in the pipeline and they're involved in the "degrade the predecessor" stage.

I haven't looked at the game files in LADC.
So I do not know if the tasks, and recurring tasks are handled differently in LADC.
It could be the condlist that is causing issues, if the condition is matched by the game, it reactivates the task, or that the re-spawn rate of the zombies is causing this issue. Perhaps they re-spawn to quickly, and re-triggers the quest before it is finished.

I am still battling some of the items on the Priboi Story Overhaul version 3.3, so I don't have the time to look into the files in LADC

I was coming back to the forum to answer your earlier post on this subject.
I just had a shufty at "shustry" (sic) in the taskmanager.ltx for LADC 1.4007.

There has been some jiggery-pokery going on.

For my sins, I had to split his missions into two sets for the wiki because he gives THREE main "tasks" and maybe TEN "jobs".

The "jobs" get shoved into taskman.ltx..

For 1.4007 there is NO time factor. So the job never expires.
There IS an "idle_time = 864000" declaration so the missionset gets reissued after 10 days. No crap gets respawned on the board...

Previously this set followed LA type coding and inherited minimal benefits in other areas similar to this from 'out_barkeep' for offing a merc-pack on Darkscape:

reward_money = 6000
reward_reputation = 3
reward_rank = 1

A lot of these have been nerfed or removed for 1.4007. Reason unclear (maybe some bright spark was migrating these elsewhere? Maybe 'rewards' are passé? Who knows?)

Not totally sure where the "tasks" are hiding out in 1.4007. Give me time.

Nearly forgot.

They don't respawn. Just like Cordon zombies don't. Ever.
No idea why. Plenty of other creatures respawn, but not these...

For that sidemission there is a "time = 604800" setting. So I guess you get a week to stiff them. No idea why the task respawns though... there just isn't an "idle_time" listed except for Numble.

Something like "Neutralize the target and recover the PDA" ? This is one of a small number of storyline tasks that can usually be ignored without breaking the plotline.

Another one is the task for the barfly Hunter to recover his lost shotgun.

Both of these are NOT coded in the 'taskmanager.ltx' which lists most storyline AND sidemission tasks. They are probably coded in level specific 'task' files, so finding out what any consequences are (rank and reputation or relation changes) generally only includes money.

I think you just confirmed that helping the Mils doesn't improve their stance towards you for the Borzij job.

No idea why the Cordon Checkpoint shoot you up though, provided I have done Sid's "covert work" they leave me alone if I stick to the road. The Bridge crew will shoot you up until later.

Things change after you help them in Pripyat, it's hardwired and allows you to visit with all Mils.

Understanding the Military

I was able to use the Rostok->Cordon transition successfully moments ago.

Previously I was fired on when approaching the transition in Rostok. This time I got the warning to stay on the road. Same warning on Cordon.

After finding the balanced rifle for Nimble in Rostok, I did not want to take the long way back to him and took a chance that the Military were in a better mood now.

They must be getting some hot chow.

EDIT: My standing with Military IS improving. It is -2114 now.

Hey TejasStalker-

You mentioned in an earlier post you had not found a Vepr in your playthrough.

I was just given a brand new in perfect condition Vepr-12 by a member of the Miltary!

They seem to hate/like me (red-neutral).

Major Griboyedev, in North Hills at the transition to Concrete Factory gives several tasks and he pays very well.

He actually gives the Vepr BEFORE you complete the mission. Gives shells for it too.

They will try to recruit me next.

EDIT: Just found out Vepr-12 is not a standard weapon and becomes available with the PRM Weapons Pack.

Vepr-12 Molot

I made an addition to the North Hills LA Wiki concerning the missions given by Major Griboyedov I mentioned above.

When attempting to make "Vepr-12" a hotlink, noticed this weapon does not have an entry on the Wiki.

This was my first edit to the WIki- I am not sure I am ready to create a page, or even have permissions to do so. But I will look into it!

Was similarly greeted going through the Military check point between the old Cement Factory and the Northern Road (after waking up in the cement factory). First time they haven't been hostile.

Disappointing in one respect, both those detachments yielded a good supply of weapons, ammo, food and stuff.

Upon returning to MAJ Grib, the conversation is interrupted by a mutant attack which becomes the active task. This went into the pre-dawn hour. While the mutant waves continued, I was looking for Gandalf at first light but all I got was a Supercontroller.

I have two main criticisms for this:

1. The mounted machine gun was clunky in aiming, and I could not turn to face my adversary when attacked from the side.

2. The controller was ridiculous. Black screen scream every time I hit him forced me to use the knife which took soooooo long. One slice at a time. And the Military guys are all on their knees in fear (I guess).

Not sure why, but I got the scripted blowout/wakeup in the bunker this time- the second time I have been through North Hills.

I had actually just come from the bunker using a Guide to Yantar because these missions the Major sends me on are using way more ammo than he gives me. I had also bought all ammo the other Mils were carrying.

Anyway, went to Dam, found the scientist with the Psy helmet, not before battling two Chimeras hanging out there. Then further west to deal with the Controller the Major told me about.

After all that, my standing with the Military has not changed. C'mon Major!

Even the Wiki screenshots show the Major green after this mission.

EDIT: What is so special about the psy helmet? My tactical helmet has telepathy +30 which is the same.

I'm not so sure it's your Windows Update. I think it's actually an update to the Configurator. This has happened to me before where I posted on the FB LA group about all my Manual Saves crashing and Dez ( the main Dez0wave Modder ) told me it was my Configurator. I updated it and then my Manual Saves worked.

However I recently got some updates to the PRM Weapon Pack. After it my Elite Detector stop showing anomalies. Shortly after this ( a few days or week ) all my Manual Saves stopped working with the Configurator. The Configurator was crashing upon launch. I assumed it was more updates as before. However this time, I could not update the Configurator.

I tried removing my LA Game and re-installing. It wiped whatever files I had before but luckily I had moved all my Manual Saves and Screenshots to a folder outside the Game. In the removal of the new Configurator and re-install of an older Configurator, I got my Game to launch briefly but it now freezes and I can't get things to work. Apparently on ModDB LA, there was some similar chatter about this in the same time period with similar solutions involving an uncorrupted Configurator.

I still haven't figured this out yet other than I can get my Configurator to come up...however launching the Game afterwards produces freezes.

I had actually just come from the bunker using a Guide to Yantar because these missions the Major sends me on are using way more ammo than he gives me. I had also bought all ammo the other Mils were carrying.

Anyway, went to Dam, found the scientist with the Psy helmet, not before battling two Chimeras hanging out there. Then further west to deal with the Controller the Major told me about.

After all that, my standing with the Military has not changed. C'mon Major!

Even the Wiki screenshots show the Major green after this mission.

EDIT: What is so special about the psy helmet? My tactical helmet has telepathy +30 which is the same.

Because "guides" were introduced it is possible (as you noticed) to avoid the blowout trigger, which is near a Boarpack by a fallen tree in the road on your first visit (and just entering Lost Fac from the NPP or Countryside from Lost Fac if you guided there)

We look to have been playing the same area at roughly the same time. But differently...

The wiki gallery pics show the Mils in friendly green because they were all done in Freeplay. They were all Red neutral for me just now because I'm more or less doing this "in game" to see if any Major Gribo's "phantom missions" will spawn. So far - all I can get is an 'I did it' dialogue for a non existent mission after all Artifact and Mutant tasks are done.

Just as an aside, you only get that Vepr-12 if you play PRM modpack.
Otherwise he ponies up a serviceable Groza, a total of 410 9x39 PAB, 360 9x39 SP-5 and a couple of mid-range armours. As you probably remember, I prefer to bring a knife to a mutant fight. And saved all of the loot.

The scorcher was already off. Before Countryside. That's all you need the crappy psi-hat for. Running through Radar and X10. You don't need the good psi-hat later on at all. I know this to be true because I was getting somewhat pissed off with the bugs in this game at LF - and just ran into X16 out of spite.

It resembles X16 SoC in a lot of respects. Very visceral! No dream sequence - a veritable mutant army - and the timer triggers as you enter the Miracle Machine rotunda. Turning it off anf GTFO brings up "Meet Nomad" just as in normal play.

Meanwhile, back in Countryside... I decide to be a good stalker and do the Waterdam stuff. Picking up the good psi-hat triggers the "Turn off the emitters" task FFS! No sale, they're off already.

Then it's just get out of Dodge.

Got greeted by a f**king Chimera at the level changer in Radar. If I hadn't jumped out of the clown-Jeep and slit its throat my lootcar would be history...

I can't speak for later parts of the Game you have gotten farther than me but I do know the Cordon. The Military at the northern level changer and the southern checkpoint can go hostile for a variety of reasons. The most common is walking off the road in the proximity of approaching them. They do not like feeling like you are trying to flank them.

Another time a blowout happened to me at the northern Cordon Checkpoint. Three of the Military dropped to their knees and then fell dead. I attempted to loot as many as I could as the lone Military soldier took off running for shelter. When I went back and found him returned, he went hostile on me I guess because he visually saw me looting his buddies. I went back to an earlier save to redo that scenario.

At the Cordon south, often lone Rookies would start wandering from the Rookie Village in large sweeps and meandering trails going south through the woods. If they get too close to the Military, they get shot. If you happen to be on the road when this happens ( like me ) then the Military can go hostile on you too. A Loner ( or maybe me ) killed one of the three men on road patrol. It became a perma-body and I can't remember if the other two were killed and vanished or they simply stopped doing the three-man patrol.

You can actually walk into the building and talk to the officer and loot some supplies there without them going hostile. I killed all the soldiers in Rostok Factory. They used to re-spawn and be hostile after doing that. In this version of LA they don't re-spawn.

My security update seems to have created a problem with the Configurator, which continues to vanish without explanation.

I'm not so sure it's your Windows Update. I think it's actually an update to the Configurator. This has happened to me before where I posted on the FB LA group about all my Manual Saves crashing and Dez ( the main Dez0wave Modder ) told me it was my Configurator. I updated it and then my Manual Saves worked.

However I recently got some updates to the PRM Weapon Pack. After it my Elite Detector stop showing anomalies. Shortly after this ( a few days or week ) all my Manual Saves stopped working with the Configurator. The Configurator was crashing upon launch. I assumed it was more updates as before. However this time, I could not update the Configurator.

I tried removing my LA Game and re-installing. It wiped whatever files I had before but luckily I had moved all my Manual Saves and Screenshots to a folder outside the Game. In the removal of the new Configurator and re-install of an older Configurator, I got my Game to launch briefly but it now freezes and I can't get things to work. Apparently on ModDB LA, there was some similar chatter about this in the same time period with similar solutions involving an uncorrupted Configurator.

I still haven't figured this out yet other than I can get my Configurator to come up...however launching the Game afterwards produces freezes.

This is why I keep things basic. If the basic game will work satisfactorily, then maybe I can add mods to it next year...
For me, stability tends to drop as the game progresses. This is highly suspicious. What changes the most as the game progresses? The number of OBJECTS spawned into the game.

Now, many of these are "stashed for a rainy Blowout" by the player out of habit, we all do it.

Many are now whisked off the board by the 'garbage manager' to DC heaven and should take no further part.

But all of the others have to be written into any given savefile - which keeps expanding in size. Nothing revolutionary here, all games do this.

But then, on loading any save there are progressively more paths for the engine to make an error, run out of memory, or even just not reconcile a descriptor for something in a modpack that may have altered.

I archive all of my games. 7z compression seems to be the most efficient. But with 1.4007, I also archive the 'mods' and 'logs' folders because I will never be able to remember what game had even which "cosmetic mod" and that could stop a gamesave from resurrecting.

After reading this I got a bright idea. I took the all.sav from a new game I had started and replaced it with the all.sav from my re-installed Game that kept crashing. I launched my last good save and the Game didn't freeze up in launching and everything was working.

My Game was running smoothly. My Elite Detector was working. I saw water reflections that looked stunningly good and unfamiliar. I thought everything was back to normal when after about 5 minutes my Game froze. Task Manager told me my Game wasn't responding. I was unable to get any information why. No Bug Trap or anything.

When I used task Manager to close my Game, that left the Configurator still running. I noticed the little flag was highlighted yellow meaning updates available. I checked it and found 3 updates for all three of the mini-mods I was using including the PRM Weapon Pack. I realized from Dez's previous help, this was probably why my Game was freezing.

I updated the Mods and launched my Game. Sure enough my Elite Detector went back to being broken. The thought then crossed my mind, the reason I had momentarily got my Game to work was re-installing a fresh, new Configurator. Once I started playing, at the same time I am guessing, the Configurator accesses the internet, discovers the updates and intentionally makes my Game non-functioning ( crashes and/or freezes ) as a way of forcing the Player to comply.

This is the worst design I have ever seen. The forced updates are not tested. As I have had my Elite Detector broken for several weeks now, obviously others have not had this problem or the owner of the PRM Weapon Pack creating the update is unaware of his bad update.

So another idea comes to me. What if I replace my updated Configurator with another fresh one and then block internet access to my Computer as I launch the Configurator ( preventing it from knowing about any updates ) and then launching my Game with the working Elite Detector? Would this work? Would this solve my problems? Has anyone thought of or tried a similar work around?

Of course this would require me to ALWAYS cut-off internet access before launching and playing my Game. That would require a lot of discipline and patience.

Note: I am copying this post and adding it to my thread about my Game.

Return to Radar

So I am now headed to Radar to complete two missions: Gauss box, and whatever the key I got from the merc barman opens.

I was surprised to find Monolith open fire on me. Actually I was more surprised to see "You are dead" pop up during screen loading first. *puts on psy helmet*

My last pass through Radar was a long sprint to the North Hills transition without the psy helmet and no hostile Monos.

Alex, the trader at Construction Site had Monolith "Preacher" armor in his inventory for a short time. One stat which stood out: -30 Telepathy. How do those guys even walk and talk?

One a positive note, the Military is now -1209.

I was also in Army Warehouses looking for the rifle Nimble wants. It is the one that looks like an M-4 but converted for sniper use. I think I already found it and sold it earlier in the game. [Mission calls it improved LR-300]

Still trudging through Radar...

Do updates change stats on items?

I'm positive the unadjusted psy helmet showed +20, and the new +30 previously.

Now they are +25 and +40 respectively.

This is why I only install updates between runs. Since adopting this guideline, my game doesn't break (unless I mentally hand off my beer and reiterate the infamous, and somewhat Darwinian, last words phrase, 'Watch This!").

Found game freezes can be a few seconds long or prolonged for 5-10 second (not timed, just an approximation of duration). Figure the ones of a short duration are caused by single NPC's coming into my AO. These would be the human NPC's not the critters. The cause of the longer freezes remains unknown.

Other....

Have been messing around in the Northern Road / Concrete Factory maps. Always found the Leap of Faith side mission compelling as it calls to the inner Indie (Jones) and it's a distinctly different challenge. Less Bullet lead, more Pencil lead. Well, at least it was till reading the meteorological reference. This highlights one of the reasons for playing.

Using that snippet of information was able to reconfigure my approach to the mission. Though it remains one of the most challenging, and the Devs will likely find a way of correcting the oversight, today it brought back that momentary feeling of exhilaration when stepping back onto the pipe. Lots of ways to do things and today I found a new one.

Maybe if/when they fix it, they'll add an egress tunnel at the bottom of the pit. Which you can take as a hint of one not currently existing, at least not in v1.4007.

Plenty of mags for my pistol and shotgun, however. About 10 grenades too.

Rather than go back to a prior save and buy what I needed to snipe the freaks, I decided to see how it would go.

Initially I set up with a clear view of the exit and good cover:

As the rock worshipers began to migrate toward the exit, I realized my position was so high that they could fire on me from within the compound.

I then moved down to the road and continued to get them with my pistol until it began to jam. Out comes the Vepr-12 until shells were expended. It was surprisingly effective at this distance.

I then ran over to the wall and looted everything I could off several bodies, then ran back for cover. I had found a G-36 in perfect condition and about 70 rounds for it. What a score!

At this point the AK went into the rucksack and the G-36 was up. Those cross-hairs really moved around and it was a challenge to get the Monos, but I did it. Check the white dots in the pics.

Got what I came for, plus two jellyfish just laying in the road and one of those Monolith Preacher Suits I mentioned earlier: https://imgur.com/dP9je6b . I also found an ACOG, which happens to be my personal choice for optics in the real world.

Had to deal with several more Monos on the way back to Dead City but with about 100 more rounds looted for the G-36 it was easy-peasy.

I am nowhere near you in saves and screenshots.

My savedgames directory has 124 items (so 62 saves) and screenshots has 61.

I generally don't have more than 4 saves per map and I name then for the map they are taken on. So Cordon1 through Cordon4, then on to Garbage1 and so on...

Upon returning to any map I start reusing the save names.

Last time I did this the 'correct' way was in 1.4005 I think.

Miserable experience.
Woke up at about 02.:30h into a thunderstorm.
Used three times as much ammo as might be required otherwise.
Savaged by Pdogs before.
Singed by Pyros...
And then close to 50 nutjobz to retire.

Bastard rocketman had me twice.
"Robber" (the first nutter you ever talk to firs time in from DC) seemed immortal.

Never played 1.4005 again.

The trouble with the Configurator is that it doesn't give you the choice to update between Games. Sure it is a manual action to update but the Configurator is designed to either crash or temporarily disable any future Manual Saves until you update. Whoever thought this was a fail-safe design to help the Player wrongly assumed all updates were flawless and without reproach.

So you can't swap it out with your Anomaly Detector like that other one from Sakharov during the Brain Vat mission? It has the yellow exclamation point on it ( lower right corner as shown in inventory ) which usually means it is required or wanted by another NPC.

Good to know. It's frustrating in my Game that the only single example I found, rather early in the Wild Territory I think, was too damaged to be repaired. I have no idea how it compares in LA.

You can't drop the weirdo blocker either. It replaces the deprecated 'Strange psy helmet' that you could only get from "Mono Stash" and unlocks what now pass for the alternative "Victory endings" provided you collect a full set of "secret documents".

Not sure if I missed something in the lab.

My PDA tells me to talk to Veronin, but he only tells me to see Ivancov, who asks about the emitters.

I shot Matrix in the leg and ran past him, never to see him again. I got info from two PC's down there too.

The other two tasks are done: get past security and shut off the generator, but the mission will not complete.

My PDA tells me to talk to Veronin, but he only tells me to see Ivancov, who asks about the emitters.

I shot Matrix in the leg and ran past him, never to see him again. I got info from two PC's down there too.

The other two tasks are done: get past security and shut off the generator, but the mission will not complete.

Did I miss something?

It's always been like this if you turn it off early. (It's too tempting now that you just scored your first Calibration Tools, to just pop into X7 and retire the Hologram)

The mission will complete after the Scorcher is also off.
A SECOND dialogue with Voronin will get you a pat on the back and the heads up to meet Guide.

Meeting Guide out of step can get you to the end of the game early with the X10 and X16 jobs left out. Just make sure you have at least the crappy psi-hat.

Matrix is the hologram security system in X7. Previously he would follow you through the lab forcing you to move quickly, and if he got too close would direct some energy at you and do damage.

I just put my cross hairs on his knees and pulled the trigger. After that, I never saw him again.

The message says the 100 Rads is open again, but doesn't specify a location.

Duty may refer to the new "bar" in northern Pripyat Outskirts.

If you're in Outskirts there's still an impressive set of loot placements, especially over the road from the "New Duty HQ". Will a protection suit do?
Chef can fix you up if you have tools and don't fancy a trip to Fox.

Pripyat Outskirts has Duty in the south, Freedom in the north and there's a no man's land between them with a tiny church in the middle. Last time I was in LA, before a lot of the side missions got added, Dez0wave really didn't know what to do with Freedom.

There was some wonky mission about some key on the bar counter but other than that everyone just stood around doing nothing. I'm sure that's probably changed since but it seems like Dez0wave has always had a Freedom problem. Like in Priboi Story, they were just simply targets for the Player to wipe out. A lot of the early SoC Modders are that way. They got it in their heads that Freedom were bad simply because they missed the cues that Colonel Skull and his men were renegades. General Voronin even tells the Player not to listen to them but that dialogue often comes too late for many Players who mindlessly think Freedom are the enemy.

You're quite right. Most of the time they just stand around.
Lukash ponies up a retrieval mission that you could write an LA travelogue about.

The "key on the bar" jig was a spy mission if you "Joined Duty", but it didn't do much except give the player the chance to run around Outskirts very early. I suppose it was a proof of concept for guides as you had to use the "Duty Guide" to get there and back. It's a cut mission anyway, like so much else.

My mistake (it's been so long) it was a FLASHDRIVE on the FREEDOM bar counter that you stole for Voronin and placed some nonsense called an "Out bug" (that he never gave you) magically on a windowsill near Skinflint.

You have the Lukash task for the Anomaly Generator.

Vanilla play gets you a Groza, 6 boxes of ammo and a nice suit. I'm curious as to what comes up in PRM if you complete it. Will you let me know please?

Pripyat Dungeon

If I previously went through this version of the Underground I have no recollection of it.

This took me a long time to get through. I only looked at a map when I could not find my way to the door code.

Lots of fun, but my PS99 Suit (with all upgrades) is now too damaged to repair. Bleh, but pretty cool that I found another one down there.

The PKM found really came in handy for swarms of Zombified Stalkers. I managed to pick up 5 ammo cans (500 rounds) there too.

As soon as I emerged from the Underground the missions continue, and there is no technician in the area. Booooo.....

HOWEVER, I soon got a message from a special trader a few buildings away. Only problem: Monolith in the way. I used the rest of my ammo, then just sprinted the remainder of the way. Then the last Mono I was shooting at got attacked by a Bloodsucker. Bye bye.

The trader had tons of cool equipment, none of which I could afford except ammo. I sold the suit I found to him, threw on the Tourist Suit I was carrying, dumped the other SP99(whatever) in the trash and decided to head back to my old buddy Fox. That's right- in Cordon. I took advantage of the transition to Outskirts and used the guide to tele to Rookie Village.

Dug out my old Freedom Guardian Suit (fully upgraded also) from Sid's bunker stash, donned my new Sphere-12 helmet(fully upgraded by Fox) and I feel like a new Stalker!

I found several artefacts underground. Currently shopping around for best prices!

I will get back to those Generators in due time.

Did you already know the door code?

Getting to the door was easy. Getting back to the map marker for the code proved quite difficult. I was up and down the levels trying to bypass blocked passages. Although learning the snorks could climb and descend ladders was really cool.

After killing two or three, I could hear another shuffling around but could not find it. As I looked left and right, it came down a ladder right next to me and attacked.

The game went to a cutscene, then the credits. What happened to freeplay?

I went to my last save and left without triggering that again.

If you go to the wish granter you get one of the "false endings". As PCDania says, the real ending in SoC doesn't happen there either, (it's a mad dash through the outside of the NPP - much fun)

If you have a save for the sarcophagus you can get the "real LADC ending" if you go to the Generators and do things. Only takes about half an hour to replay Sarco.

False ending

I think I have only seen these false endings before.

Finally completed both missions my PDA has been telling me to see Voronin about.

He told me to meet someone at the old church, but nobody was there.

I have already met up with Guide earlier in the game.

I look forward to a "real" ending, whatever that is.

Freeplay

Well Stalkers!

I have gotten through X2, met Ghost in the graveyard and been transported back to our good buddy Sid.

I was worried the game would end with the cutsscenes and that sad peaceful music that plays.

It reminds me of the end of a horror movie where the threat has been eliminated and everyone is relaxing and going home getting patched up.

In those movies, sometimes the director decides the monster isn't actually dead and we see one more attack!

Room goes dark and when you activate the flashlight, you are surrounded by Bloodsuckers.

Just a thought...

This game really pulls me in.

I was browsing my PDA and noticed I have 10 skill points to use!!!

I must have missed that announcement.

That is quite an end game reward.

Incidentally: Barter-10, Endurance-10, Sharpshooter-0, Survivor-10.

I have never had any complaints about shooting accuracy, hence no points there. Barter doesn't seem to cause any noticeable difference with merchants, though. Endurance is easily quantified with 2.5 kg for each point.

I met Brutus in garbage who plays a game with medkits and gives 10k for the right guess. Sort of weird encounter there.

The three part mission to recover the safe combo was fun, and the reward is really generous!

When I look through my AKS-74, the crosshairs do not move at all, presumably because the rifle is fully upgraded.

When I pick up another weapon, the sights wobble around, so Sharpshooter points would stop that?

As long as I use an upgraded weapon, I don't seem to need those points.

Skill points and PRM Modpack

What I linked to is what I gleaned from the vanilla 1.4007 files. No surprises there.
I just loled again with the "How do I earn... " quote. Yes! it was meant to be light hearted AND a shrug at the same time because who knows what tweaks some of these mods do to the game. Someone wrote up what missions gain a point here:

But there's some randomness in play too. You could come back with that stupid bit of wire in one game (and get a point) and in another game do the same thing and get nothing...

So you have to play to find stuff out.

About your loadout.

Right here I see you're playing PRM and for some reason that Goldfish looks to be giving +16 bulletproof, the ToadsTool looks to be giving +20 rupture and the radiation figures appear to be reflecting 4*3+3=15 for the Bubbles and Knot.

My vanilla game would give +21 bulletproof, +26 rupture and wouldn't be registering that +15 radiation at all (I would need to wear Shells, Giblets, Urchins etc to affect that figure)

If you were playing the hardcore mod that would be something like +12 bullet, +13 rupture (or thereabouts)

So PRM is tweaking the arty properties, and many other game features are probably also altered in subtle ways (rewards for missions?)

(Not to mention unopenable stashes, guns like Grozas that only accept a specific scope)

So yeah, Play it. Find out. Remains good advice at this stage because none of the games or mods come with a handbook worth spit.

Freeplay

So as you can see from my loadout above, I still have a basic armor on, the same weapons for a long time in game, and the homemade detector.

By keeping my carry weight down and with stamina recovery artifacts, I can run as long as I want and never tire. Vehicles are more of a pain then they are worth, plus I cannot find any.

I was very pleased to find I can join Duty in freeplay.

Duty missions

So after Joining Duty I have a continuing list of mission to handle which is great.

Going back to the Freedom camp in northern Outskirts produced no hostile actions, even though I am Duty now. Freedom disposition is -900 and I am even wearing Duty armor! (I thought it the right thing to do)

Ended up recovering Maddog's dogtags from the corpse of a Dutyer:

I don't know if anything is different in freeplay from the normal storyline.

You can Join Duty earlier in the game. I had it as a conversation option, but did not want to align myself with any one faction.

The missions are expected to be completed in a certain timeframe, hence the map marker on Veronin's original location when he is not there anymore.

I continue to get directed to him at Great Metal Factory when he is in fact in Outskirts now. Has been for some time. Devs did not expect anyone to be doing these missions in freeplay it seems.

I have not seen an option to join any other factions in my game.

I have just done another mission for Veronin.

He told me to see a Guide to escort me to the Freedom camp, but we are all in Outskirts now so it was not needed.

Gave password, planted the bug, grabbed the flash while Chef was picking his nose around the corner, told the guard it was the other guy who took the flash, and ran out of there.

When I got to the exit of the compound, where the Lenin statue is, there was a Merc.

I put my crosshairs on him and he is waving at me, so I don't shoot.

I decide to slide up next to the building for cover and move toward him.

My minimap shows he is alone.

He is red hostile but has his weapon shouldered and takes no action against me, so I continue.

When I am about 10 feet away from him, five of his buddies appear out of thin air. Teleported in or something.

I walk backwards and give him five 12ga shells to the chest, turn around and run back to the building where there is another Merc shooting at me.

He gets the other five shells in my mag.

There is no time to reload, so I equip the AK and dust the other four dickheads from around the corner.

I assume they were after the flash drive, but I saw nothing on the Wiki about this ambush.

Maybe I look cute in the Freedom armor I was wearing for this mission.

Veronin says I am a Lieutenant now.

Again, it looks to be a consequence of the PRM pack. Vanilla 14007 didn't have the "be a spy" submission when I played Join Duty. It certainly worked better in 13003 (except you had to arbitrarily stiff the Sin House occupants at the beginning of the game) - but no merc ambush. It was coded, but never seemed to happen.

Occasionally you might see a lone merc wandering around Outskirts but that was about it.

I tried to start that "Deal with Voronin" intro into Joining Duty in my vanilla game in Freeplay - but it was a non starter.

None of the ambush scene is documented simply because it's never been previously seen as functional.

Maybe you get to join Freedom later on??

Not sure I follow you here.

I am playing 'vanilla' as far as I know.

The only mods are PRM weapon pack (which only mentions weapon appearance and animations), Autumn Vegetation and Closed Optical sights.

These were downloaded within the Configurator.

They will affect gameplay like that?

Autumn veg and Closed sights are cosmetic fixes.
PRM is an option that does more than just change appearances and animations. One example is the incredibly SLOW reload time for the Eliminator. In a vanilla game it's called 'Armstel Protecta' for either variant.

The difficulty seems to come in the preselected options at game setup. The configurator seems to have a mind of its own and selects PRM as though it were a required option. It isn't. Deselecting it and avoiding options like Ultrahardcore gameplay and Lunatic Economy (or whatever) gets you a basic, vanilla game.

From your last loadout piccie it's now clear that PRM tweaks the PROPERTIES of artys apart from using a different inventory set.

So that's weapons and artifact properties changed in PRM. Who knows what else is changed...

Can't see why you think it's a cheat in that respect. There's just as much veg and other crap getting in the way as in the vanilla July veg. I might agree that running at a low detail or render might confer an advantage, but some players have to do that to get the game to run.

Either veg variation is just as concealing to NPCs and just as transparent to bullets.

Perhaps you could clarify what you would like revised in the X2 article.
All of it plays about the same as in 1.3003 except the end fight and it's pretty obvious what you do there.

It is not "lower", it is colored more brown to look like fall.

I like it because those colors make the zone appear more dead.

It is not "lower", it is colored more brown to look like fall.

I like it because those colors make the zone appear more dead.

Gotta disagree with you on that point. Summer foliage is fuller, taller, more lush. Ground coverage with the fall mod installed it's lighter, shorter, more sparse. Mind you, no two computer systems are the same.

After reading many of your posts clearly we have differing opinions of what constitutes a cheat. Mine definition is that if a modification makes the game easier to play, it's a cheat.

As to the graphics level, don't have a top of the line card in this system, game play is on medium.

Also think your definitions of obvious likely differ as well. Would detail out the differences, but won't spoil it for you. BTW, what difficulty level do you play at? That may be a factor.

By your definition, if anyone were to play Extra hardcore survival, Unrealistic hardcore economy, Darker nights and so on; that wouldn't be a cheat?
