The 'burn' mentioned above is because of the time, energy and effort required to create and play the game in a satisfying manner. Understand and appreciate Byte Me's stance of playing the game cleanly. Good argument can be made for playing it un-modded, but then you end up dealing with the games bugs. Topping it off, doesn't the configurator come with some built in mods that correct certain 'fixes'?

---END QUOTATION---

The "built-in fix" is principally confined to a Radeon water-fix if I recall, but there might be ones for more recent DirectX releases.

I use the 'water-fix' because I'm running on a GPU with that heritage.
Running a vanilla install seemed logical. It pretty much behaves well FOR ME on what passes for a legacy system (which the devs quietly didn't mention was no longer supported in keeping with previous releases)

There are enough changes. I have no pressing need to reskin artifacts, guns and suits as seen in PRM.

I can also go back to pretty much any save and fork the game. I even decided to replay from day 3 and make some other strategic choices.

But the vanilla looks pretty stable.

And that suggests to me that some mods are being let in that are substandard or poorly tested somewhere.

Good luck with any logfiles.

...feeling the burn. Re-worked the systems swap file due to an oddity not related to the game and this message began popping up every time the configurator loads: https://imgur.com/UbBSQKg

Am able to ignore it, load saves and play but the rub is: Is it a sign of a lurking future failure that'll force a full restart. At this point have no way of knowing whether it's coincidental, directly related or incidental to the changes made.

Made the mistake of not addressing it immediately, as such do not have each of the log files saved. The '\appdata\logs\configurator_xps.log' file appears to be overwritten on each error. Have begun archiving both it and the corresponding '\appdata\logs\xray_xps.log' file in hope of being able to understand the information they contain.

The 'configurator_xps.log' file appears to be a Save file analyzer going through each of them but not in chronological order. 2000+ lines long.

The 'xray_xps.log' file tracks the systems hardware information, then game specific components. Going to need to see several copies of it before an inkling of an idea can be germinated as to what it may impart. 1300+ lines long.

Think players who actually alter the games ini files are attempting brain surgery using a marlin spike. Not enough of them post here to get a read on their success/failure rate. The posts read may be one-offs but it's a facet of little interest so it's not been monitored.

Development cycle 2

Then there's this:

The first release of LADC that was playable was 1.4002.
It had some serious issues to fault it and enough were posted on these fora (mostly by S.C.A.R.) but the players found workarounds and exploits and chatted them over and things like :-

1) Nimble "wallhumping" could be fixed by exterminating nearby mutants.
2) Nimble "going on patrol" and expiring in a random Blowout wasn't fixable.

(Why he wasn't just "immortalized" is a question I can't answer...)

3) The Expedition never completed properly. But could be made to - with a little "extreme prejudice".
4) The Yantar documents NEVER finished. It does now, be happy.
5) Find a friend of Seriy worked as well as it does now.
6) Find a friend (of the Country Major) ALMOST worked..

On the plus side, 1.4002 had some useful exploits :-

1) Although the LA Tools kit was flaky and the Spawn menu maybe not available, if you had certain body parts and a point on your Barter skill, you could play "Pass the poltergeist brain" with Sid during a blowout.

2) The Bandit Sniper was good for a scope and a rifle.
3) In fact, looted rifles were mostly in good shape...
4) Nimble could be coaxed to reward you with 18000 Ru ad infinitum.
5) Many items sold to NPCs for full whack.

Moving on to v1.4005..

Downers:
1) Artifacts devoid of bulletproofing.
2) Hardcore economy hardwired. <<-- THIS is where it lost half of its fane.
3) Insta-trashed ordnance. Big, BIG no-no. <<-- Another 25% here..
3) Miserable experience. <<-- Most of the rest exeunt stage left.
4) Paulie the Stew is still hanging out near the Dolg on Forest. Looks like a bus will never arrive.

Upsides:
1) Muh Vintar "shoots straight-ish"
2) **Insert fluff piece here**

Moving on to v1.4007.....

Downers:
0) The fault reporting mechanism for LADC is either "faulty", misconfigured or non-existent.

Cue https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Machine_Stops for our SF aficionados.

1) Vehicles (they were good, they didn't need "fixing", now they're shit. My grandmother could carry more shopping than these heaps.)
2) Artifacts - completely revamped - too confusing.
2a) Artifacts - too rare - too random - too non-canon - too unavailable.
2b) Artifacts - there are MOAR? FFS why? Wasn't 58 enough?
3) Basic equipment. No anomaly det, no Knife? Again WTF?
4) Bandit sniper - with a shotgun??
5) Find a friend (of the Country Major) JUst doesn't exist.
6) Paulie the Stewpid is still hanging out near the Dolg on Forest. Looks like forever.

Uppers:
1) Toolkits and Upgrade BS - The level running is killing me too often from laughing /sarc
2) Artifacts! - if you ever get your head around this non-canon smorgasbord you might get it to WORK for you. Trouble is, all the hardcore fans have left..

So what are we left with?
A long term project success?
Or one that lost (sic) its way?

I don't know what's going on with my Game anymore.

The Configurator constantly crashes. Get some new message about it being unstable. I thought it was my most recent saves which means some update but as it turns out NONE of ANY of my Manual Saves, even going back to the game beginning will work.

Even with no Manual Saves in the Savedgames folder, the Configurator still crashes and won't let me pass. I even got rid of everything and downloaded all the files again and a brand new Game has the Configurator crashing. All the trouble started after a new PRM Weapons Pack update that broke my Elite Detector.

I'm really fed up with LA DC at this point. I don't know who is to blame. Maybe the Configurator is put at the mercy of ANY added Mods and the Player can have their LA DC Game ruined by anyone tweaking those Mods.

I don't know. The ModDB page is full of new posts of people having the same message. I'm just so tired of having to deal with these interruptions and now nothing working.

Might be Game Over for me.

Oh, how I feel your frustration...

It used to be that a release stood (or fell) just on its merits; and right up to v1.4005 you could snag any release and play it to your hearts content.

Then the "Extended Pack" upgraded 1.4005 to 1.4006 and went through a number of revisions (mostly to do with positioning of toolkits and upgrade data)

BUT, instead of releasing each version and leaving it available on ModDb - someone thought it would be kewl to overwrite the pack with each revision.

Trying to document that which changes by the month on a wiki just ain't possible so I called a halt to it. Had to. The devs couldn't make up their mind about what was what or where.

Fast forward to today.

I only play the released vanilla 1.4007 with cosmetic mods.
Then I see addons on ModDb stating that something needs Configurator v1.23548klm or some such and cringe in anticipation of what the fallout is likely to be.

I will never touch PRM again. Someone else can document it and I don't see that happening any time soon.

Things don't seem to be tested properly before they're given the OK to be used as a mod. WTF?

And it's not a trivial problem.
You can lose not just a couple of hours "play-work" as happens with some games, but as you have found out, WEEKS or MONTHS of invested time.

At which point a lot of players fume and say "f*** it."

Sorry to hear that you can't continue. Having the Elite detector on the fritz must be a royal pain.

Does it also apply to the Advanced and Simple versions?

Particularly liked your final gallery links!

Do you mind if I write up the GMF-Yantar levelchanger exploit?
full attrib to you of course, I always used the Construction-Yantar "jump" but yours could be easier very early in the game while the Wild Territory Controller hasn't spawned.

Just thinking strategically:
I could hit Yantar on day three mid-morning.
Bag the free OTs-14-4A 7.62mm and a PSO1 scope from some broken nearby bridge..
Hoof it to Agroprom via Construction.
Enter the Institute from the rear, take the roof, and pick off the Mils.

Won't work as well in PRM because the scope won't fit (you need ONLY some PO-4variant)

Bandit Diversions: Yantar ( Part 13 ) Conclusion

I love finding the little details you would never see without some serious exploring....Like this skeleton of a poor soul on top of some buildings in Rostok Factory.

Well it's been a lot of fun writing and sharing my story. I hope everyone has enjoyed it. I've delayed long enough going back to the Bandit Base in the Dark Valley and talking to the drunk to initiate the events that follow.

Unfortunately the last forced LA Configurator upgrade for the Weapons Pack seemed to have broken my Elite Anomaly detector. It no longer shows me the location of anomalies on the Mini-Map. Kind of took the enthusiasm out of my Game to lose this feature. Hopefully there is a fix soon.

Just beyond the gate entrance to the factory, a little further on and to the west of where the first bloodsucker encounter takes place. There's a ladder leading up to a deck above the buildings front doors. Don't know who or what fling that part of the poor guy up there, or where the rest of'm might be, but there lies most of...? On the up side, except for the crows, place can't get a lot of ancillary traffic. Sorta like a Tibetan Sky Burial.

Sorry 'bout your detector, that truly suks, but all things come to those who are patient. Or at least what's left over after those that hustle move through. Some stove pipe filing cabinet guy said that way back before the day. The Dev's try to break our will by throwing gulag class heartbreakers under our feet. You waltz into an area all cocky and ready to rock with freshly repaired gear only to find out you're soup du jour and every critters gotta have a spoonful. Like the one a few versions ago where the Controllers range could cover the entire area you were in, but of course this isn't discovered this until first coming into their range.

Though not applicable to your situation, found upgrading mods mid-game to come with negative (run/game breaking) side effects. Since then follow the rule to set the mods when beginning a new run through and not alter them until completing the run.

PS: luv the new posting style with the added images.

Bandit Diversions: Yantar ( Part 13 ) Conclusion

I thought I would do something different to conclude this including my reward from Colonel Petrenko for the last of the Yantar documents. Here are some screenshots at some key events for the 12 Parts shown before while wearing the magical Bandit jacket which was the focal point of all my adventures.

Borov's Safe. Grab the document and you can't put it back. All the Bandits will go hostile and want to kill you. However you can take Borov's pistol, as it's an object needed by Nimble:
https://i.imgur.com/MKPXTsV.jpg

Giving it to Nimble sets up the Player for the next big important task of getting the armor at the Brain Vat in Yantar:
https://i.imgur.com/VNDMQKd.jpg

Apparently I took so long to retrieve it that Nimble lost his patience with me and he resorted back to our earlier arrangement of waiting for a buyer:
https://i.imgur.com/nr5fqZh.jpg

Getting this mission was what I was waiting on before finally doing the Brain Vat mission for Sakharov:
https://i.imgur.com/bVDvlAO.jpg

General Voronin, who never had anything interesting to say, suddenly offered me a mission to go to the Forest level. My two previous trip there to the Mines found it empty of people so this must be the change to populate it:
https://i.imgur.com/blDvl38.jpg

I've mentioned this several times but not in enough detail to reveal how I did it. This is what any Player will see if you try to go to Yantar too early:
https://i.imgur.com/M5kZjsZ.jpg

However I discovered if you hug the wall on the far left side on the train platform, you get a different message and access to Yantar early:
https://i.imgur.com/7xsUKey.jpg

Grabbing the SSP-10 in the open air supply room behind the Brain Vat. Of course you can't do this until you take the readings with the special device Sakharov gives you while dealing with 3 Controllers and return to him with the readings:
https://i.imgur.com/VncN8Fc.jpg

After that I climbed the ladder, jumped up on the fencing and walked the top edge of it all the way to being able to jump over to the windows of the Control room. There below among the instrument panels was the second identical armor:
https://i.imgur.com/67FwHVS.jpg

Fox revealed he didn't have the technical information to perform the 1st tier upgrade which opened up the 2nd tier to carry more weight. Bummer:
https://i.imgur.com/xPfDgfs.jpg

Nimble's reward for the SSP-10 armor was a Skill point. I would have to wait for a Buyer to get the cash part:
https://i.imgur.com/tOHN6cD.jpg

Nimble giving me the key found in the pocket:
https://i.imgur.com/vSnZd1k.jpg

Going back to Yantar I confirmed my suspicions that it went to the vault door at the Brain Vat. However I went back to an earlier save and decided not to use it and keep it as a souvenir:
https://i.imgur.com/h8xg37m.jpg

The last document I missed in Yantar and went back for thanks to the LA Wiki. All this time right in front of me in the Bandit Garage:
https://i.imgur.com/eyGJT5k.jpg

Getting the Game prompt that I got the last one and it was time to get my reward:
https://i.imgur.com/m1BExmD.jpg

Colonel Petrenko's reward including a Sniper AKM ( 7.62 x 39 ) a lesser Duty armor and a really nice Fort 20-A pistol upgraded to full auto. I switched to this as my main pistol and dropped off the Makarov I had carried since Game start:
https://i.imgur.com/PXNnSRw.jpg

I love finding the little details you would never see without some serious exploring. Like this skeleton of a poor soul on top of some buildings in Rostok Factory. You can't see this from the ground below. You have to do some high rise building hopping:
https://i.imgur.com/exfVwKq.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/eqyWtz5.jpg

The infamous miniature basket-ball hoop & ladder giraffe in Yantar inside the Mobile Lab compound:
https://i.imgur.com/Qs6xlbh.jpg

Well it's been a lot of fun writing and sharing my story. I hope everyone has enjoyed it. I've delayed long enough going back to the Bandit Base in the Dark Valley and talking to the drunk to initiate the events that follow.

Lost Alpha Director's Cut 1.4007: Tejas Stalker Diary

Bandit Diversions: Yantar ( Part 12 )

I had two new armors, one of those I had to give to Nimble. As I had been keeping most all my armors at a stash in Rostok, I was inclined to drop the one I was keeping off there first. However the Duty Repair Tech wouldn't do all the upgrades I wanted so I was taking everything to Fox in the Rookie Village. That worked out for me since I needed to see Nimble there too. I used the Guide to fast travel to the Cordon.

I arrived at the Rookie Village, and immediately took my SSP-10 to Fox to see how many upgrades were available. I was not surprised that the most coveted feature, being able to carry more weight was not available due to not having the technical information for the upgrade before it. That's annoying as I personally think being able to carry more weight should always be the first feature for any armor when you first get them. Otherwise they will sit around collecting dust because the Player will use a lesser suit just for the better carrying capacity.

Yeah. The suit still has its physics bonuses for the most part (run, sprint, jump) but it's been gradually nerfed during the DC dev cycle:
The discovered suit has inbuilt extra carry:

Add weight 20 kg (v1.4002)
Add weight 10 kg (v1.4005)
Add weight 5 kg (v1.4007)

Stacking some extra carry weight was also easier in earlier versions, but it isn't a biggie - just involves a visit to Darkscape Docklands.

https://lost-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Upgrades_data_for_technicians#Internal_thermal_regulation_system_schematics

..and the bulletproof progressively drops from 40% to 25% too.

I went to Nimble and got my reward for his SSP-10 which was a single Skill point. If that was the case, Nimble could make a lot more money selling the Player Skill points. He had no new tasks but gave me a key he had found in a pocket. I was not expecting this but figured it probably went to the vault door that was locked in the Brain Vat room. I guess Dez0wave expected the Player to return and find the second armor that way. Of course I had already taken it by scaling the fence and jumping through the Control room window.

Maybe he'll grease your palm later on. This gophering runaround by the devs doesn't further the plot. I suppose it's OK-ish within the Yantar or Dolina levels, but multi level runarounds get old IMHO.

Glad you had the presence of mind to do the "high wire exploit" so that you don't need to go back for your bonus copy. The key is a tiny deadweight until you use it (if ever)

Soon I was back in Rostok. I went to Colonel Petrenko to see what his dialogue had about the documents. Apparently I was not ready yet as he implied I hadn't found them all yet. I thought I had recovered most all of those in the Yantar Underground, even finding the odd placed one inside the empty trailer on the desk just north of Father Diodor's bunker. Which one was I missing? I'd been all over Yantar and was at a loss.

I thought it must be some place tricky since I had spent so much time in Yantar. I decided to consult the LA Wiki to see just how many documents I was looking for. I read about each one and looked at my inventory to find the corresponding document by name. As I looked at each one I discovered I was only one short. When I read about it's location, I could not believe I had missed it. It was in a place I had walked by again and again but did not see it lying on the floor in a building devoid of any furniture.

I confess. I once missed the huge "Experiments Journal" in the anomaly infested bunker. Rookie mistake. I've missed others too. With NINE that isn't hard to do.

I don't know if this has happened to anyone else and if you haven't guessed by now based on my description, it was the document inside the empty Bandit Garage placed in the corner. I felt bad for not spotting it as I had talked to the Bandit that hung out inside and his re-spawned duplicates time and time again often selling them Used Zombie weapons. Now that I picked up the final document, I got the screen prompt that I had them all and it was time to go back to Rostok to get my reward from Colonel Petrenko.

To be continued...
