Shadow of Chernobyl on a Laptop ( 1.0006 )

I've always wanted a Gaming Laptop. However when they first evolved capable of playing the Games I liked, they were way too expensive for me. A few years passed, as prices went down and technology improved, finally a point came where the most I wanted to spend was met with the minimum requirements I hoped to get. I wanted a GTX 1060 but to get one, I would have to sacrifice a great display, great speakers, be a 15" or be in some kind of color scheme or theme I found distasteful. I didn't want flash and bright gimmicky colors. I really wanted a DVD drive too which the low end GTX 1060s didn't have in the brands I liked for the money I wanted to spend.

I originally was shooting for around $999 but was also looking for a bargain around this past Christmas. I found one with a great display, great speakers, a DVD drive but only with a GTX 1050 Ti. When it came up with a promo price reduction of $100 and an additional discount of $10, the price of $839 was just too good to pass up. So now I'm doing 3 things I have never done before: Playing Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl using the 1.0006 Patch, using an Intel i7 CPU and using a Gaming Laptop.

Here's what I got. My model is the ASUS FX73VE-WH71 with a 17.3" IPS screen, Intel Core i7 7th Gen 7700HQ ( 4 cores ) at 2.80 GHz, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti with 4Gb memory and 8 Gb DDR4 System Memory with a 1 TB HDD Windows and 10 Home 64-Bit Gaming Laptop. It's just like the one shown here except there's no "5" between the 7 & 3 on mine. https://www.asus.com/Laptops/ASUS-FX753VE/

I'm very pleased with the quality of the graphics, while playing SoC at the highest settings with great picture and sound. I'm going to add an M.2 SSD drive soon and maybe bump the system memory up to 16Gb.

* * * * *

So what I'm going to be doing here is mainly just talking about the Laptop experience, a few thoughts here and there about the Game and I'm also going to be doing a little Modding. I've played the Game countless times without Modding so I already know what to expect. My main goal is a simple Repair Mod so I can use the unique weapons. After all, what's the point in the Game giving them to you if you can't use them for very long due to most already having wear? More on this soon.

Congrats on your new laptop Good to see you got a 17'' model.

Before buying a M.2 SSD make sure to check this:

---QUOTATION---
M.2 Connector (NGFF)
Briefly known as NGFF (next generation form factor after mSATA), M.2 is the current connector standard for mobile SSDs, although it has also been adopted by motherboards as well. M.2 connector can plug in both PCI-Express-based and SATA-based SSDs, but is generally PCI-Express-based only. This is important because, as we explained above, SATA and PCI-Express protocols are not inter-compatible. The only way to confirm compatibility between your motherboard M.2 slot and your M.2 SSD is to read the respective product specifications first: if they match PCI-Express-to-PCI-Express or SATA-to-SATA, you're good to go! With the launch of 9-series motherboards, the ROG website and forums will also keep a list of M.2 connector protocols

PCDania~

Thanks for saying that. Also for the SSD info on your link.

What's funny is the most difficult adjustment for me personally in using
a Laptop to game on has been the change from using my specialized
Gaming keyboard to a regular keyboard. I have been so used to
using my Wolf Claw Gaming keyboard made for playing FPS
Games that it has really spoiled me. Here's a link to that:

Wolf Claw Type II Keyboard
https://www.extremetech.com/computing/75730-wolf-claw-type-ii-keyboard/4

I got it when it first came out and have used it ever since. It's a huge
advantage not having to lift my hand and having all the number keys at
my fingertips and being able to do so much with my thumb with it's nice
vertical space bar key. So my major issue has been adapting myself to the
Laptop keyboard and getting comfortable with a whole different layout mindset.

Here's two more products I got to Game better with and to cool the Laptop:

ASUS Republic of Gamers GX850 Laser Mouse

Guess your keyboard problem is related to the software not being supported by Windows 10.

I myself use a Logitech G700s mouse and a Logitech G910 keyboard.

Laptop cooling pads are nice to have if one lives somewhere where it gets pretty hot. Here in Denmark they are more like gadgets as it rarely gets over 25C degrees in summer.

Shadow of Chernobyl on a Laptop ( 1.0006 )

PCDania~

I'm not trying to use my old Gaming Keyboard with my new Windows 10
Laptop. What I'm saying is that my hands, fingers and mind are so used
to my specialized Gaming keyboard that NOT using it anymore and now
using a regular keyboard has been the biggest difficulty and transition
for playing SoC on a Laptop. In addition to that, looking at a reduced
size 17" inch Laptop screen from my usual 27" Asus LCD monitor and
just the general comfort that my large desk affords a PC type setup.

So I installed the GoG version I paid for long ago that I have never used.
I bought both the Steam & GoG versions on sale ( to help GSC out ) but
have always used a DVD to install the Games. I guess this makes another
first for me related to what I'm doing. That's another reason why I am
using the digital 1.0006 patch version since that's the only way it comes.

I've been playing "Team Epic's" Call of Chernobyl Mod for the past two
years non-stop. It's funny how they generally used all the Clear Sky
levels they could so my mind is still on the CS version of the Cordon
and not where it should be on the SoC version. Looking at my SoC
1.0005 version post it was exactly 2 years ago I had stopped playing
when I was making repeated trips into Pripyat and was recording video.

Ah Ok. I understood you had tried but had to give up using your old keyboard and was forced to use the keyboard on the laptop. You could try connecting it to the USB 2 port but the software for the keyboard will most likely not play nice with Win 10.

I understand your problem having to use the keyboard on the laptop. I have long arms relative to my hight so I have tried out many different keyboards over the years but always ended up using a non-ergonomic keyboard because of lack of space on my desk. Living in Denmark means many specialized keyboards are not available because of the key layout. Took time getting used to each time I switched between different keyboard types, and they were not nearly as special as your Wolf Claw.

Now I don't know how much space you have but your laptop have both a HDMI and a mini-displayport connection so you should be able to connect your 27" monitor. There is a setting for the laptop monitor so you can mirror the picture on the laptop and the monitor and another so you can close the laptop without it shutting off. Problem might be that the laptop is running at 1920*1080 while your monitor is likely 2560*1440 so the picture will get a little fuzzy.

Like you I also have the DVD, the Steam and the GOG versions of STALKER games. I have different mods on each version so I often get confused when playing and can't find a specific thing in the game and then remember it's in one of the other mods

Currently I'm contemplating using my laptop (a Asus ROG G73JH from 2010 runnning 1920*1080) for playing SoC on my TV which runs at 3840*2160 so the TV upscales the resolution. I expect it to become a bit fuzzy but maybe I have luck it don't get as bad as I expect. I have a Logitech K750 keyboard so I don't have to used the keyboard on the laptop, and my mouse is wireless too.

Those STALKER games are pretty special, I have other great games but for some reason I tend to return back to them, with or without mods. It's something about the atmosphere and the way the NPCs have their own life.

(Sorry if text is a little confusing, my brain is not playing nice today)

Shadow of Chernobyl on a Laptop ( 1.0006 )

I already have a PC hooked up to my Asus 27" Monitor & Gaming keyboard
so I'm not really trying to use the same larger screen and better keyboard
with my Laptop. I'm trying to get into the Laptop experience. Using the screen
and keyboard as is. The idea being getting adapted to the Game solely on the
Laptop components and not trying to substitute it for my older i5 CPU PC.

The downside to the Stalker Games is trying to show it or explain it to other
people. You can't always bring them into your homes so the appeal of a Laptop
is to take it on the go, play Stalker anywhere and show it to people everywhere.

A friend of mine, who loves technology and own several Laptops, bought his
first Gaming Laptop. He was drawn to the power and technology despite not
really being a Gamer. His son Games on his Xbox and he thought he could
buy the same Game and play with him. That didn't turn out to be accurate as
I guess the communities are segmented. I introduced him to SoC ( I bought it
for him during Christmas on sale at GoG ) and have tried to explain it to him
and get him interested. So that's where things stand. The funny thing is on his
own, he started off in the Rookie Village, for some dumb reason sold his pistol
to Sidorovich and then went on the Car Park mission without any weapon.
Needless to say he died easily and was frustrated by a lack of guidance.

Sounds like a good idea, that way you can have fun while getting accustomed with the laptop. At least you got the discontinued 17" laptop and not the 'upgraded' 15". I'm not sure why the manufacturers make 15" gaming laptops, maybe because low weight, slim and long battery life is all the rave? As far as I can see, the 15" laptops are also running at 1920*1080 so it's not for making it easier for the GPU. Personally I would get your 17" any day over the newer 15" model. The sort of gaming these laptops are made for requires at least a 17" imo.

I myself has actually used my laptop for showing friends and family SoC, only other game I have shown using my laptop is the original Crysis.
My gaming laptop is now-a-days my backup solution if something goes wrong with my PC and for playing movies on my TV. - I really should try play some SoC on it using the TV.

Pretty funny story about your friend. I wonder what went through his head when he got that gun. It mean, it should sort of give him a hint at what he would need for playing the game . I hope he has started enjoying SoC.

Yep. I'm happy I got the 17". Even though it's slightly heavier than a 15", I think the greater screen size is far worth the difference. I think 15" Laptops may be more popular but I think that is overall Laptops, and not just Gaming Laptops. I could be wrong. I haven't actually seen any figures. I wonder if these Steam surveys cover all the different sizes and graphics cards used in various Gaming Laptops?

That's another good point you make about having a Laptop. I have several that can serve as a backup for the internet but this is my first one as a backup for Gaming. Not a bad idea for a just-in-case scenario.

I also got two different new sets of headphones for my Gaming Laptop.

First I got some heavier, premium headphones where quality and comfort was the primary focus. My budget was not to exceed $100. These were only $99. I'm very pleased with the materials used plus it came with two different types of ear cushions. They have a 3.5 plug in for sound & USB plug in for the lights and the 7.1 surround sound.

This woman is so fun & bubbly with her reviews plus I love her laugh.

Second, I wanted a lighter, inexpensive pair where they may not be as comfortable but they were lighter and easier to take with me on the go. Even though this set came out in 2010, I found several links selling them for around $60-70. However I got it brand new on E-Bay for only $27.50 and with free s & h. Gotta love E-Bay for finding NOS. I'm very pleased of course with the price I paid but also very impressed with the quality and build of the materials.

Most laptops sold are 15.6" as they are sold to people who have to carry them around and/or because they are easy to hide away in a drawer if you don't want them on your table/desk all the time.

I have tried some headsets but never found one that I liked. Sinse about 2004 I have owned a set of Logitech Z-5500 5.1 surround speakers. Great for games, pretty good for movies, lacking a bit for music as the satellites don't have midrange speakers, only highrange speakers. Turning up the subwoofer while in a field of anomalies makes for quite an experience.

Shadow of Chernobyl on a Laptop ( 1.0006 )

The Asus Laptop with the GTX 1060 I was considering ( $999 on sale during Christmas ) was a 15". However the screen didn't get as good reviews and the speakers were not as nice as what I got. Better screen and better speakers, in addition to having a DVD drive is what made me settle for the GTX 1050 Ti for a lot less money. You mentioned my 17" was a discontinued model which wouldn't surprise me. The GTX 1050 Ti came out in October 2016 but that is the general date and not necessarily when it showed up in Laptops. ( I just googled the Laptop date and it was January 2017, so my Laptop model is no more than a year old ). DVD drives are less and less common in Laptops, especially low-end Gaming Laptops like mine. The smaller the Laptop, the less chance you'll see one too. Of course a lot of what I'm saying is just my personal observations. Feel free to update my perceptions if you know more on a subject than I appear to.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti ( Notebook )
https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-1050-Ti-Notebook.168400.0.html

At home, I can enjoy the Laptop speakers but I wanted to buy and test a few Gaming headsets to have something and to have the ability to take it on the go if I need to not disturb others like in a Coffee Shop or whatever. In other words, an environment where headsets would be required. I also just bought a set of USB powered speakers to plug into it to take on the go too. My requirement was USB power only and not an AC powered brick. For that I picked the Logitech S-150 2.0 Digital Speakers. I'll be testing those tonight as Amazon just delivered those today. I wouldn't recommend these for a PC as some other reviews said they were not loud enough but may be just right for a Laptop for the portability angle. Of course USB powered speakers are never going to be as loud as an AC powered speaker. On YouTube there are versions with a side control for volume, which must be the older version whereas mine has 3 buttons volume +, -, mute on the front.

You guys ever try using Razer Surround with your headsets? If you haven't id suggest trying it and its free unless you want the pro version ($20.00 ) Gives great surround sound for headsets.

I have a few headsets but my favorite by far is the Astro A-40, little pricey but well worth it. HyperX Cloud II are also very good.

The reason more and more laptops don't have an optical drive is manufacturers try making laptops as thin as possible and an optical drive makes this difficult because the drive can just be 'so' thin and the laptop still needs to be a certain thickness for protecting the hardware. It's also normal that most software is downloaded and music and movies are streamed so why bother with a optical drive when that space can be used for other things. Not to mention they save a few bucks on each laptop in manufacturing.

A few years back when having no optical drive, people got in bad trouble when they needed to reinstall their laptop after a harddisk failure as they had no idea how to install from a USB stick. Further back it was even worse as you needed an external CD-drive for installing. It's first now with Win 10 that you can buy Windows on a USB stick and AFAIK also first now (I have no knowledge with Win 8/8.1) you can easily make your own bootable USB stick for installing Windows.

Thanks. I'll check that out. The more expensive Asus headphones that I got have 7.1 sound but the lighter Asus Rumble Feedback that I've been using more doesn't. I looked at the Astro A-40 on Amazon and it lists it as being made for the PlayStation 4. Is there also a PC version? You weren't kidding when you said it was pricey as $249 is definitely way more than I want to pay. The HyperX Cloud II looks similar to the premium set I bought and it goes for the same money. Do you have both and if so which did you buy first?

That's pretty much what I know/seen too about the trend to make Laptops thinner and lighter. The best way to do that is to omit the DVD drive. That also makes less room for decent speakers. Additionally as you mention, with Steam and GoG, you can get most any Game you desire. However I still want the ability to pop in a DVD movie without having to download it or stream it. That reminds me, I've heard that Windows 10 is picky with Game DVDs due to DRM and stuff. I think that's why I went ahead and used my GoG version, even though I didn't test that situation. I didn't try those new USB powered speakers yet so hopefully this weekend.

Yeah, Win 10 is picky about the DRM on many disc's. The problem is a security hole in the DRM software so Win 10 blocks it 100%. Lucky for us gamers, GOG exist Even better, GOG doesn't exhange $$ to €€ 1:1, instead they place the difference in your GOG wallet. Just remember to add a little money to your GOG wallet. Problem is for legal reasons, GOG can only keep the "difference in price money" (the $:€) for a year, if you add some of your own money you don't loose anything. GOG kindly told their customers this little trick as they don't like people feeling they get cheated. GOG also supports more than 2 currencies:

---QUOTATION---
The currencies that we support are AUD, BRL, CAD, CHF, DKK, EUR, GBP, NOK, PLN, RUB and SEK - which are available in supported countries - and also USD, which is available everywhere.
---END QUOTATION---

They don't do any exchange tricks on any of the currencies.

What music and movies go, I prefer having them on a disc, luckily my laptop has a Blu-ray drive and I also have a Blu-ray drive in my PC.

The Astro headset i got is for the PC, Mac and compatible with consoles. The price your looking at is with the mix-amp included. I didn't get that...just the headphones here:

https://www.astrogaming.com/headsets/pc/3AH4T-AGX9N-506.html?psids=3AH4T-AGX9N-506%2CMIXAMPS-PC%2CMOD-KIT%2CA40-TAGS#start=1

Those paired with Razer Surround is a really good set up. I had the hyper x first but my son needed a headset so i gave him those and ordered the Astros later on. Both are really good but comfort wise and quality...its hard to beat the A-40s.

If you was wanting a travel pair here is a good deal at best buy:

I have a pair of those too. Really light and give good sound quality for the price. My daughter claimed those lol

GoG is great for playing some older Games I have/like on the Laptop. One of the first ones I was playing was Lucas Arts "Outlaws", one of the best western games ever made in my opinion despite it being dated. The smaller screen actually works better since it was optimized for times when a 15" CRT was king.

PressurE~

Logitech is definitely a great brand always making high quality products. I enjoyed the part of your experience where your kids kept commandeering your PC products. That's funny.

* * * * *

One of the first experiences I had using a Laptop for Gaming while playing SoC was that for some strange reason my pistol or shotgun kept randomly firing. Why was this happening? I was thinking that some other keyboard command must be doing that I was accidently touching. So I rechecked the menu settings and saw no alternative key commands. Was it a problem with my Laptop? I sure hoped not as I didn't want to deal with returning it. Was it a problem with the 1.0006 patch? That seemed unlikely but the thought did cross my mind.

I tried to observe when it was happening but it alluded me for awhile. I finally found the culprit. I was guilty of lightly brushing the trackpad with my thumb when I was using my fingers on the WASD area. It was hard to believe that was happening because I thought I was being careful not to touch it. I quickly learned I could disable the trackpad automatically when a USB mouse was plugged in. Problem solved but it was a mystery and inconvenience for awhile.

Accidental firing by trackpad, just what I thought though I can't prove it

Good you found out it's possible to disable the trackpad in the software for it when attaching a mouse.

Shadow of Chernobyl on a Laptop ( 1.0006 )

Yes, I googled it and found where in Windows 10 I could go to disable it.

So, some may wonder why play SoC on a Laptop? Well, I could say I never need a reason NOT to play SoC but my thinking was I wanted to focus on getting used to "using" a Laptop and I thought I could do that better with a Game I was familiar with and already knew what to expect.

That way, I wouldn't be sidelined with learning a new Game and paying more attention to that. As I've mentioned I have intensely been playing the Team Epic "Call of Chernobyl" Mod testing the 1.2, 1.3 and 1.4 versions for the past 2 years. Most recently after playing as a Loner in all three versions, I tried the Monolith Faction in 1.4 and thoroughly enjoyed that way more than I was expecting. It's truly the best Stalker Mod I've played in 10 years.

Back to SoC, since it's been two years and after playing CoC, one cannot helped having that Mod affect my playing style. That's the great thing about all the Stalker Games and the many Mods is that the Player gets better, tries new things, expands his ( or her ) understanding of how things work and it never feels like doing the same thing you did before...or at least that's my opinion of how I see it. However since my last play though involved a really long game ( 1 year game time to reach Pripyat ) I'm definitely not going to repeat the hard, slow route again. Sorta been there done that. For that reason I thought I would add some tiny Mods.

More on that next time...

Downloaded Call of Chernobyl, updated it to 1.4.22 and have played it for a few days. Takes some getting used to but I like it so far though I'm still mostly running around in Cordon working on getting my equipment upgraded. Easy money to get if taking the Killer Contract from Sid. Subject have a tendency of getting himself killed and you can go get your money without firing a single shot. IMO it should be coded so you have to personally kill the subject, I have no idea if that is possible. Nice hearing messages about the subject you are hunting and what else is going on.

PCDania~

I'm glad you are giving Call of Chernobyl a try. 1.4.22 is the best version even though there is a 1.5 Beta out. The 1.5 version attempted to be more like the Misery series, with intentional hardship and meager supplies management from what I've been told by friends. Even the Misery Design Team ( MDT ) people liked Team Epic's work so much they used it as the basis with their new Call of Misery Mod series.

The ability to take an Assassin job and have other Men & Mutants do the dirty work for you is something I always enjoyed in Shadow of Chernobyl too. I've had a busy week with work so I have not gotten back to my SoC game since Monday. I left off being in Rostok. Having taken the "Kill Oleg Fiend Gusarov" task from Sidorovich, I'm trying to assassinate him in Rostok without alarming Duty. I may not be able to do it.

You are a sneaky guy, you will manage

Have just got 20+ military killed in Agroprom by luring them to the factory + shot down their pesky helicopters using only my upgraded AC-96/2 (believe I have shot down 6 choppers now using only my AC-96). Unfortunately their reinforcements arrived while I were trying to get into their base so I had to run. From my experience with the military in Great Swamps I find they are a little fast at respawning if they have an actual base on a map but I will find a way around (or rather through) it.

Sounds like CoC 1.5 is not for me, I've read about playing Misery, let those who find it fun play it.

Shadow of Chernobyl on a Laptop ( 1.0006 )

I took a glance at the Stalker Wiki. As always there's some wildly inaccurate information there. This is due to people modding their game or the usual "I only used the ZRP and it only fixes bugs and it still gives me the vanilla experience" misconception. Then they mindlessly edit the Stalker Wiki and forever corrupt the Stalker Universe with misinformation.

I have always found Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov in Rostok when I first arrive in Rostok. For unknown reasons, the Stalker Wiki says he usually leaves Rostok ( Bar area ) before the Player arrives. In the past, in a slower long Game ( for me ) after being there on many visits, he usually eventually dies in a campfire/body collision in Rostok making getting the task ( limited to 24 hours ) very difficult. The difficult part is that you have to take the three sequential assassin jobs from Sidorovich every time in order to instigate the availability of the Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov assassination job.

So currently I'm doing a faster, quicker Game this time and as expected Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov and Sparrow are awaiting me when I arrived. I did a few trips back and forth to the Cordon for various tasks and initiated the assassin job tetralogy. I don't have time to waste. I could do the rush through the Dark Valley after getting the job. It's after the Player completes X-18 that Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov feels the need to travel.

I'm going to the Dark Valley soon but not yet. I'm ready for Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov's death now in Rostok. I'm not waiting around for the unpredictable spawn death. I try a few variations of the silenced pistol, silenced viper and knife, even when I think no one is looking but to no avail. His kill results in the Duty alarms and my death by everyone against me. There has to be another way.

Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov and I do the dance around the Rostok Water Tower. Like Sparrow, he patrols the square around the Arena. I get near him and pull out my pistol and shoot him to wound. He turns "red" as my new enemy and I turn around and high tail it to the roof of the building just above the Duty base entrance. In previous patches of the game, Loners who entered Duty territory were shot but not in later patches like the 1.0006 but even so Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov doesn't take the bait. However I found that he has an ally. Another Loner ( just one, whereas the Stalker Wiki incorrectly says two to three well-equipped Loners will aid him ) is shooting at me too and pacing around the building I'm on the roof of.

I jump off and run out the main square and into the long hallway building where the "Get out of here Stalker!" Dutyer patrols. It is here I'm trying to lure Oleg's buddy outside. With a lot of effort I finally draw him out and his crappy shotgun marksmanship is easy to avoid. Running down to the Duty sentries I duck behind one as Oleg's man goes back and forth, hiding, squatting and taking pot shots in my direction. As expected with the death of a Dutyer, the other Dutyers wake up and quickly execute him.

Now I just have to deal with Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov. He's a lot smarter and not as easy to maneuver into similar situations. I do try though. I even attempt to do some bouncing grenades at him but any time I kill Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov, everyone tries to kill me. When Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov is shooting at me, others around us go on alert with drawn weapons but they do not interfere. I even get some more NPCs wounded but none killed. Round and round we go until I take things further and I am able to wound him with my pistol. He falls to the ground and does not get up. He tries several times though.

Once in a previous game I had a Mercenary that I wounded inside Rostok right at the level changer to the Army Warehouses. He was a spawn replacement I made go on-line that I was not normally supposed to encounter in that stretch as he was headed to the Wild Territory. I let him be. Later as I entered the Wild Territory I found him moving further west but always on the ground wounded. In other words, in off-line mode he could travel but going on-line made him fall to the ground again among the Bandits & Mercenaries in the narrow passageway which was his final destination. Eventually passing mutants killed him but he was wounded for many return trips where I never hurt him further.

I mention this knowing this might happen with Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov if I left. However I knew waiting around would be no better especially with the clock ticking. Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov would either stay that way or eventually get up. I decided to leave Rostok and go to Garbage to grab a load of used weapons to sell to Barkeep. Upon my return and as I approached the Duty checkpoint ( in range to make Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov go on-line ) I got the prompt that my task had been completed. Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov was dead. I went to the Cordon and Sidorovich gave me a Mica artifact as my reward.

I quickly did the three generic assassin jobs again to see if the next fourth one would appear. It did. "Kill Father Diodor". At this point in the Game I had not yet done the Agroprom Underground ( bypassed to get the Military Documents by direct surface route ) the Dark Valley, the Wild Territory or Yantar. The Game however is telling me to kill Father Diodor in the Army Warehouses. To do so would seriously screw up so many things. That will come much later when I am ready to do all the other events in the entire level.

I believe I gave up on killing Gusarov though it's so long time sinse I played vanilla SoC that I can not remember for sure.

Managed to clear out the military base in Agroprom in CoC without getting shot at. Seems the commander is some kind of ghost. I killed every single soldier and blew up the BTR's but the sound from the commander continued. Maybe it's all the spirits he's ingested

It's really amazing how complex some of the SoC tasks are. To a person that had previously done the three generic ones with Sidorovich: Kill the rookie stalker, Kill the "sales representative" and Kill the trader stalker, you have no idea to suddenly expect a 4th later until you progress in the Game. If you had done them a few times not getting a 4th and decided that there was nothing new and stopped doing them, you would totally miss the task and the associated specific person assassin jobs to kill Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov or Father Diodor.

However that's nothing compared to the sequence tasks of General Voronin. He gives 15 different ones and I believe 8 or 9 have to be done in order and don't all appear until you reach certain milestones in the Game. Some people never realize all of these unless you find a good source like the Zone Survival Guide or the wonky Stalker Wiki giving you guidance.

Yep. Gotta take an RPG-7 and a couple of rounds to take out those BTR-70s in Call of Chernobyl. The Military Base is tough in 1.4 but it's way toned down from the super tough Agroprom Military Base in 1.3. That version had 3 to 4 times as many Soldiers and was crazy hard to overcome. I think just like in SoC, if you shoot the speaker it will stop yelling at you.

As soon as you turn your own Faction green or other neutral Factions friendly "green", you can hire Companions. Give them some high end weapons and you can have a killer squad. Just don't leave them behind in a level and go to another because they won't stay. Be sure to set up the keyboard commands for follow/don't follow & shoot/don't shoot since using the face-to-face dialogue conversations alone are not advisable when on the run or the heat of a battle.

I killed the BTR-70's by one F1 grenade each. Well, the one inside the northern entrance seemed to be invulnerable. I have no idea if it's active or not as I did not walk up infront of it, it does not react to me being behind it.

Do you mean all members of a faction being green? I'm playing as 'Loner' and I've made a few 'Star' stalkers green and my reputation is 'Excellent'. When talking to green 'Star' stalkers I can ask them to become my Companion though I have not tried it out as I intend to play without using Companions.

Oh, and my difficulty level is 'Stalker'.

What Voronin in SoC goes then I have never taken all his tasks. I might be wrong (shame all those great mods ) but I seem to remember you have to be on the side of Duty for getting them all and I preferred Freedom.

I like taking out the two BTR-70s with the RPG-7. Very satisfying to watch them blow up into many pieces. The northern one outside the compound I take out first. From the trees to the side works well. Once inside the Military Base I approach the eastern gate where the BTR-70 is inside. I like to sneak up through the Bar and shoot it with the RPG-7 from inside. Luckily they don't respawn on return trips.

In the 1.3 version, the Marshes Military at the Sunken Village and the Machine Yard used to be super difficult. I guess people complained. Way toned down in the 1.4 version. Before you could have 20-30 Soldiers at each one. They would literally come pouring out of the Sunken Village and I would have to retreat to the Pump Station and make my stand with the other Loners defending their counter-attack. Now it's just 7-12 Soldiers at both Marshes location.

Playing on "Stalker" difficulty level is a reasonable choice. The Game is supposed to be fun and you don't have to prove anything to anyone by insisting on "Master" like some people do. "Master" can make killing on both sides easier where one shot can be quite effective. It works both ways.

You need to do tasks and jobs for each Faction to turn the entire Faction green. Usually 20-30 jobs like killing mutants, bringing back mutant meat or other jobs from important NPCs earn the most points. Lesser jobs from squad leaders for supplies are good too but I believe less points. Clear Sky is the easiest Faction to turn green due to the wide variety of jobs from the Bartender. Then the Ecologists, then Loners, with Duty & Freedom more time consuming. The Merc Faction is the hardest due to limited jobs.

The best Exo in the Game is the Merc Exo with 5 artifact slots. The Merc SEVA is the best SEVA. Don't waste your money on the regular Exo or SEVA you buy from the Loner Traders. You can only get both by visiting Dead City.

* * * * *

Just went to the Dark Valley with the "Kill Vampire" job for Barkeep. First I helped Bullet out and rescued his buddy on the road. Bullet gifted me a PSO-1 Scope and I bought a second one from him. Snitch in the Bar sold me the GP-25 Koyster when I first got there. However I've been using the Sniper Obokon ( superior magnification PSO-1 scope ) I got from Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov.

Visiting the Pig Farm for the first time in this Game, I knew not to approach from the front or north where the shady NPC will try to sell me the Gauss Gun. Trying to go past him makes them hostile. Instead I went in the gate by the road and ducked in the empty building on the east side. The duplicate building on the west side is where everyone hangs out. I went in the side door and found 4 NPCs at the campfire. Two had unique names. Vampire and Clumsy. I shot Vampire in the back of the head with my silenced unique Viper ( 9 x 18 ) I got in the anomaly train tunnel in Garbage. Only Clumsy jumped up and went "red" hostile. I shot him and the others ran around in a panic but remained neutral. Looting Clumsy I recovered the unique noiseless Viper ( 9 x 19 ) that had belonged to Vampire that Clumsy must have snatched when Vampire was killed because he was sitting next to him. I went out the side door like I came in. Made a quick trip back to Rostok to get my reward. A Fireball artifact. Actually the unique weapon was the real prize.

Seems one of the Clear Sky tasks is buggy. The quest about protecting the Ecologist will not register that I succede. The 'End Quest' marker is in the Clear Sky camp but nothing happens when I return with the unharmed Ecologist. Is there any special trick to this or do I just have to give up taking that quest?

In other news the Clear Sky camp was attacked by 22 boars at once. Only one NPC died and I collected a lot of hooves and boar meat

The Scientist Escort Missions in the Marshes & Jupiter have a similar bug. Once you complete it and return to the designated spot on the PDA, you have already noticed nothing happens. They simply don't acknowledge it is completed and therefore no reward. Here's how to resolve that. Stand in the designation completion spot. Make a Manual Save and then reload it. Once you do then initiate the dialogue with them and you can complete the task.

In the Marshes you may get 1 or 2 Scientists. In Jupiter you can get up to 3. My advice is to make a Manual Save before you ask for the task and reload it if you don't get the maximum number of Scientists in each location. Why? Each Scientist has 5,000+ rubles and you can sell them junk weapons that regular NPCs will not buy. The reason being Scientists briefly become "Companions" during the Escort duty. Only Companions will buy lower grade used weapons that other NPCs & Traders will not. Scientist Escort Missions ( every 24 hours ) are a great way to make a lot of money.

Additionally you can reload your save to choose from a variety of 5 to 6 different artifacts as your reward. The Jupiter Scientists also give a Veles Detector as a reward instead of an artifact. Handy if you really need one.

* * * * *

Just knocked off the Bandit Base in my SoC Game. Gotta admit it will never be the same after playing the lot more difficult Call of Chernobyl for the past 2 years. Did not see Poker after Borov's death. That's good as I hope he went to the Agroprom Underground so I can take the mission to kill him from General Voronin. I used the unique viper ( 9 x 18 ) with silencer almost the entire time against the Bandits. Ran a full load of artifacts and armors back to Rostok. Getting ready to do X-18 next.

Yes, occasionally you can get a stash activation at the same time but you should always get an artifact from the Marshes Scientists and always get an artifact from the Jupiter Scientists with the exception of the Veles Detector substitute. I usually take my companions ( or at least 2 of them if I have 4 or 5 ) with me on such missions and sometimes have had a crew 4 to 6 people overall going on location. Even if some of the Scientists get killed, you can still get the reward if one of them returns. One time in Jupiter we got ambushed on my way back near the Cement Plant and two of my companions took off to fight some NPCs while I steered my Scientists in another direction. I never saw or found what happened to those two companions again. Lost to the Zone.

Strange. I didn't get to select an artifact. Pretty sure no artifact was spirited into my inventory either.

I did have some fun picking up the stash in the military base. I had luck it contained a set of Basic repair tools so now I have a spare set of tools when needed. I seem to have more luck finding the Advanced and Expert tools in stashes I stumble over.

No, you don't get a choice of the artifact they give you.

For that reason I said to make a Manual Save and reload it to see what artifacts they give you. Don't like it? Reload again. There's only 5 to 6 different ones to choose from...but it's done by reloads and not dialogue. Sometimes if you don't care you may want to do it to get a stash activation at the same time. You'll get an artifact every time in the Marshes but stash activations each time are more rare. I believe the Flame or the Eye are the best choices.

Good deal. Turning other Factions friendly "green" has many rewards including better prices and sometimes better Trader inventory. Weapons are plentiful and free from looting so the main thing to save money for are weapon upgrades and most of all better armor and upgrades.

Here's a couple of Call of Chernobyl Marshes videos I made to enjoy:

"Sure you want to chit-chat with all this shit going on?"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TLaE1MQfW4&t=172s

Just finished doing the X-18 Lab in my SoC Game.

The Game tells you to escape the Military showdown where the helicopters land Spetnaz at the instillation and you are supposed to flee to the south and escape to the Cordon. Of course this is the last thing you want to do. The Military have not only infiltrated the X-18 Compound but the Bandit Base too. Instead of fleeing them you want to stay and take them all on. Big source of loot to hang around and deplete their forces.

Additionally if you are near the X-18 compound, the Pseudogiant respawn will be arriving shortly and you can get a 2nd kill in the same trip. Once the X-18 Pseudogiant is killed in the Underground, the replacement spawns in the Red Forest and immediately travels south through Rostok but uses the outer path through the Twilight Zone in the Wild Territory. From there to the Dark Valley level changer and it makes a beeline to the X-18 Lab. This is why the Game story is written for you to go south and not see the respawn walking to it's assigned location.

LOL, the Chit-chat one is great, he had all the reasons for getting out of there . Did you find out what made that shooting guy bug out?

The military one: Proves it's good to know when to hold one's fire. That Duty guy must have nerves of steel (or a suiside wish).

I can see the videos are from an old build of CoC. In 4.22 the Relations info page does not seem to work. No colors are changing and when setting it to show numbers, they also don't change.

I remember the first time in SoC I attacked the military base in Agroprom. I did like you in your military movie, found a nice corner in a barracks and let them come to me, at least I didn't have to check before shooting. Only ones I had to hunt down were a few soldiers in the main building.

Yes, that was the 1.2 build when things were a little rougher and unpredictable. A lot less crazy action at the Clear Sky Base in later versions. The NPC got spooked when a fellow NPC got turned into a Zombie after an Emission and after shooting him, seemed transfixed on shooting into the same area. My favorite part was the dude scooting around gliding and not actually running.

The other video I actually had to make Manual Saves at several points. This was due to me accidently shooting Duty when they ran into the building to loot the Military. What made my stand at the Southern Village so difficult is that the Duty & Ecologists that were there are neutral to the Military. Therefore they didn't warn me, help me or get out of my way during the Military assault coming from the level changer. Good Times.

The Relations page is static in every version. It should change as your relations change but it is not dynamic or helpful in that way.

After coming back from X-18 but not yet letting Barkeep know, I was shocked to find an Exoskeleton sitting around the Rostok campfires. It was Master Blaster.

Saw Kruglov getting shot at by some Loners. Later when I returned he was dead. His reputation was 'Bad' so I wonder what he had done. Guess it's coded that way to hinder players in having access to cheap repairs - or did he accidentally hit a Loner? I do see messages about Loners fighting Clear Sky now and then.

Also found a bug. When killing a mutant it can be skinned twice. Simply skin it, leave the map and return before it starts decaying and you can skin it again. Got a lot of mutant parts that way after a large group of mutants attacked Rostok Bar.

In the 1.2 and 1.3 versions, I usually found Kruglov and Vasilev dead because they would make stupid suicide runs a the Zombies with pistols. Semenov was a little better because he was scripted to patrol the area near the rear level changer going to the Agroprom. I complained about this as I'm sure many others did too and so the 1.4 version all three are supposed to be invulnerable especially Kruglov who performs repairs. That too is new since in prior versions no one did in the Ecologist Faction did repairs and a player had to travel to the Military Agroprom or Rostok for any type of repair.

Yes, sometimes any neutral Faction can have members of another neutral Faction, that at the squad level can wound or kill another Faction by accident setting off shooting match until one side wins.

Yes, you can leave a level and go back to previously killed and skinned mutants and dip twice so to speak. That's new in 1.4 version. Probably to help compensate for the prior problem that if you killed a mutant and before you skinned it your game crashed, restarting your game meant you were out of luck skinning the same dead mutant. The crash or reload nullified being able to harvest anything.

Always take mutant parts ( not meat ) to Yantar or the Mobile Lab in Jupiter for the best prices.

Master Blaster is dead. More details later.

Well, Kruglov is dead, still lying face down in the same spot I found him last time. He used to be found walking around the western end of the concrete drainpibe one can seek shelter in. WEll, it took 3 pissed off Loners to take him down.

Re. selling mutant part: I've made a lot of money selling mutant parts in Yantar, way more than from selling artifacts.

Also found best way to kill Snorks is using a knife. If swinging the knife at the right monent when they jump at you they are dead before hitting you.

One can get repairs done in Cordon at the farm North of the railway embankment.

One question: Say I play as Monolith, if I killed all Military in Agroprom except the Mechanic, would he repair/upgrade my equipment? - I killed him but I can't remember if he started running before or after I started shooting at him. IMO it wouldn't really make sense if he repaired my stuff if I played as Monolith.

Come to think about it, I believe NPCs are made invulnerable to their enemies but can be killed by allies ( who would normally wish not to do so ). You can go back to an earlier save where he is alive, reload a save where he wins/survives or kill his aggressors for him. Having a repair tech in a level far from Rostok is more valuable than being buddies with malcontents in your own Faction.

I did play a Game as Monolith. You have no weapon/armor repair techs south of Pripyat. Everyone is your enemy.

* * * * *

I'm still enjoying the specific conditions south of Rostok PRIOR to giving Barkeep the X-18 documents. After that so many things change in every level.

I have a Merc mechanic in Dead City, a Freedom in Army Warehouses (he seems to be fond of having company, second time I saw him he had a guy with him behind the table blocking the door, third time he had 4 guys visiting him )

A Duty in Rostok ( can't find out if it makes any difference feeding him vodka. )

A Blue Sky in Great Swamps.

A Loner in Cordon.

As for making Kruglov alive again I found him dead right after completing X-16 and didn't feel like doing that one again so I left him face down in the dirt.

I'm currently seing how many mechanics I can turn green. Currently I have the Loner and the Blue Sky ones.

Are "Clear Sky" known as "Blue Sky" in the translation of your Game?

Is it that way in the GSC retail version just as the Call of Chernobyl Mod?

Getting the various Faction Traders and Repair Techs to turn friendly "green" usually coincides with turning the entire Faction at the same time. However in various versions I have played I have had some inconsistencies. Mainly with two specific Factions: Duty & the Mercenaries. I've gotten the leadership of Duties or the Mercenaries to turn green but not all the ordinary troops at the same time. Of course if you get the Traders or Repair Techs to turn friendly "green", you get better prices in buying and selling and expanded inventory. The downside to not getting all the troops the same means you cannot hire them as Companions.

One time I had a mix of Companions and accidently took one of my Companions who was Clear Sky all the way into the Freedom Base where suddenly Freedom went on alert. I was inside the Freedom HQ when they ran in and head-butted him with their rifles and killed him. Better not to mix Companions and stick with either Loners or Ecologists who have the widest variety of good relations with the 9 Factions.

* * * * *

Finally turned in the documents to Barkeep for X-18. However before that I've made several trips into the Army Warehouses. I have done this by totally avoiding Colonel Skull and his scripted conflict with Freedom. I enter the level and immediately turn west and cut through the Bloodsucker Village. I talk to Merk, visit the Loner Camp ( and have done all the assassin missions there ) and go inside the Freedom Base. When I talk to Lukash I initiate the dialogue going around the Duty dialogue and have started doing the side missions for him. As long as I totally skip the Duty/Freedom fight for now, I'm good with going into the AW early.

No, my error. They are called "Clear Sky" every where. I tend to call them "Blue Sky" sometimes because their uniforms are based on blue. I'm better at remembering what I see than what I hear so as I see the blue uniform more frequently than the words "Clear Sky" I some times call them "Blue Sky".
--------------------
I've managed to turn all of Clear Sky green now after running a few more errands. First about 75% in the Clear Sky camp in Great Swamps turned green but now they are all green. I believe Clear Sky members are now green on all maps.

I've also turned all of Loners green now, on all maps.

I have an Ecologist in Cordon who is a yellow star on the map but shows up green when placing the reticule on or talking to him.

Am currently trying to turn the Ecologists and Duty green. Just for trying it I hired a loner and his two followers as companions while taking Semenov out hunting Monsters. Told them to only attack if I were attacked. They did as asked but I thought 3rd WW had started when we got attacked by some fleshes and dogs. I'm intend on continue the game without using Companions but it's good to see it works.

Is there any idea in getting the Duty mechanic in Rostok drunk (2x vodka)? I believe in CoP he gives a rebate once within each 24 hours when drunk, not sure if that works in CoC too. Not that I need money, I have about 1.1 mill RU now.

Interesting to see if your game buggers out when you start the Colonel Skull quest.

You should find enough of the three type of repair tool kits to give to all the Repair Techs including the ones in Jupiter and Zaton you haven't visited yet. Things are much easier in the 1.4 version. I think it was the 1.3 version that the Expert Tools were so rare in my Game that it took 7 months Game Time before I found my first set. Of course you can always make a trip to visit Forester in the Red Forest. I'm not sure you were aware that he can do all three levels of upgrades on all armors and weapons but he's not cheap.

The Red Forest used to be super tough in early versions with a massive amount of Military you had to fight to get through to Forester. Now it's much easier. Also in the previous version, you could leave gunsmith toolkits in a stash with a single bar of life remaining and they would replenish if you got far enough away ( for them to go off-line or if you left the level ) and you could use them as new again. The entire 1.3 economy was made on spending a lot of time transporting used weapons, repairing them on a mass scale with 30 to 50 gunsmith tool kits in one location in desired "home bases" usually in safe territory and making money once they were made new again. 1.4 eliminated that dynamic but it was probably for the better. Now you make money doing side tasks and on mutant parts ( not meat ) to the Scientists.

I don't think getting the Rostok Repair Tech drunk accomplishes anything.

* * * * *

I finally did the Wild Territory. That's the Cordon, Garbage, Agroprom, Agroprom Underground, Rostok, Dark Valley, X-18, Army Warehouses ( partially ) and the Wild Territory in about 6 weeks Game Time. Fast for me. I escorted Kruglov to the edge of the WT and remained behind for some more action, stash activations and loot runs to Rostok.

I have 2 Basic repair sets and 5 or 6 Advanced repair sets waiting for a mechanic in need. Am currently trying to find a Expert repair set for the Army Warehouse mechanic.

I have fully upgraded:

Cordon
Great Swamp
Rostok
Dead City

In other news when arriving from Dead City to Army Warehouses I got attacked by a undercover Monolithian on guard together with some Freedom guards at that checkpoint. As he was facing me when I arrived and was a bad shot I took him down before he managed to hit me. Got no excuse from Freedom, they were probably high on weed anyway

I've got a habbit of scanning any groups from Freedom. They are neutral to Bandits so sometimes a bandit is travelling with them. Got to be careful not to hit the wrong guy when the shooting starts

In versions prior to 1.4, the Bandits were enemies with everyone. Another forum member here who likes to almost exclusively play as the Bandits liked it this way. His two favorite Bandit activities were attacking the Mercenaries in Dead City and attacking the Freedom Base.

As you now know, the 1.4 version has made the Bandits on friendly terms with Freedom. This was due to complaints from some people that being a Bandit was too hard. This allows a Bandit player to have allies and to get repair and supplies from the Army Warehouses which is a good level to conduct operations in neighboring levels. However you are right, it does make it harder for a Player allied with Freedom but enemies with the Bandits.

I didn't have too much trouble with this in the Army Warehouses level when Bandits would appear, but it was more difficult in the Jupiter level when Bandits & Freedom would form joint squads. This was because if you shot a Bandit in their squad, the Freedom members would go hostile to a Loner player for example. Best to just avoid those squads if possible unless you don't mind killing your allies.

* * * * *

Looks like I'm not getting the "Secret stash of the Lucky One" this game. If you know the specific conditions you have to meet for that to happen, you know how difficult it can be.

I find it's okay with the bandits as it is in 1.4.22. Puts a little spice on the game play. Well, I have killed at least one bandit (Can't remember if I've done it more than once) who was part of a squad of Freedom NPCs. They naturally reacted to the shooting but didn't fire a single shot themselves.

Seems like I managed to turn the Ecologists green in Yantar, except for a single one running around in a blue outfit. Even saving his friend didn't turn him green. His friend was held hostage in Great Swamps, nice to find out I could take him all the way back to Yantar.

Found a Expert repair set so now the Freedom mechanic is fully upgraded.

Shot down the Brain Scorcher, believe me or not but I forgot something pretty important down there. Went back down to get it and got surprised by a Controller which I killed using my knife (I prefer killing Controllers, Burers, Chimeras and Snorks with my knife, is usually much faster and cheaper than shooting them.) No other surprises until I returned back to Radar and some Monolithian popped out directly behind me from X-19 and started shooting at me

******

Believe I've only read about that stash. Which reminds me about something else. The very first time in SoC after shutting down the Brain Scorcher I checked my map and got pretty surprised as I saw Sid and Bar Keep making their way northward. Unfortunately I had to do a reload shortly after and (as far as I remember) their two icons had returned back to their respective 'homes', I know for sure they were not moving northwards any more. Heard or read anything about this else where? The game must have been on its second, maybe third patch.

Sometimes you can have an entire Faction go green but then turn a few NPCs to yellow if you accidently shoot them or a member of their squad by accident, especially with a shotgun that sprays shot or throwing grenades.

Burers are best with a knife since they will rip any other weapon out of your hands but I prefer to kill Controllers, Chimera and especially Snorks from a distance than face to face. Snorks and Pseudodogs have the ability to degrade your health in a matter of seconds when you have physical contact, especially if there is more than one doing it.

* * * * *

I never seen Sidorovich or Barkeep try to leave their level but I do know if you take a job from Wolf right before going to the Agroprom, you can track his movements on your PDA Map as soon as you open the way ( by getting the Documents from the Agroprom Military Base ) to Rostok and he's headed north with the crate of dynamite that Fanatic later tells you about.

The Ecologist dressed in blue was yellow like everyone else in his faction before all the others turned green, only way he could have turned green before is if I had given him first aid, and I know I have not done that to anyone in Yantar. With all those Zombies roaming around I feel it is wasted. If I had killed or wounded one in his squad before he should have turned green he would have turned red and attacked me. I've just visited the Ecologists in Jupiter and the mechanic was green so I must have succeded in turning all the other Ecologists green.

The Loner mechanic in Jupiter now has all 3 repair sets.

I can ask the Ecologist mechanic in Jupiter for a task and guess he wants some tools too. I have 1 or 2 sets of Basic and 5 sets of Advanced tools stored away in Army Warehouses. With a tiny bit of luck there is a set of Expert tools in one of the stashes I still haven't visited.

********

Ah, so that is how people found out Wolf is the one delivering the dynamite. I wonder why Wolf secretly have sided with Duty. GSC had some pretty interesting ways of making sure things were the correct place in time It actually makes the game better instead of say the Dynamite being the right place at the right moment by pure luck.

Modding my Game ( Part 1 )

I have wanted to talk about the Mods I am using with my 1.0006 version Game, but like always I have a habit of sidelining my written thoughts and instead actually spending my free time playing the Game. As I have mentioned before, I am doing many things different or for the first time in this play through. First time using a Gaming Laptop. First time using the 1.0006 version patch. First time using a digital download of any of the Stalker Games. First time using Windows 10 playing a Game. What is not a first time or even new, is Modding my Game. People that have known me a long time are probably aware I was Modding my Stalker Game before I even joined this Forum.

I was actually a member of another Forum when S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl came out in 2007. Several of my friends I had made on the other Forum had all bought it and were playing it together, talking about it, giving advice and dealing with it's unique characteristics. One major thing I didn't fully understand was the stamina/weight restrictions. I was used to Games that let you carry everything you wanted, which wasn't uncommon at the time since most Games didn't offer a huge amount of weapons or individual items you came across. Things you found, you used and they would deplenish or new weapons you would acquire, the old one lacking the needed ammo for, you would discard.

A simple Mod was shared, one that would allow the Player to carry a lot more weight. This solved the stamina problem. This solved the weight restriction problem. A Player could carry as many weapons as needed, as much ammo as needed, there was no need to drop anything or be lacking any new wonder I came across. Unknown to me at the time were other qualities of the Mod I didn't fully realize until my first Unmodded Game. This included the Mod giving me weapons that didn't wear out. Armors that did not degrade. Additionally I believe it included a huge amount of money, so much so there was no need to loot and sell items for profit. Everything I'm describing enabled a Player to have the ability to see and go where ever the Game prompted me with every possible ease of access.

Modding my Game ( Part 2 )

So after Modding my Game, making things easier, giving myself everything, removing the normal restrictions and hardship that are in place that make the Player struggle, strive for and earn items, tasks and accomplishments, I discovered the Unmodded Game. Another way of understanding what I mean is that simply GSC Game World had years and years through the development of SoC, to make decisions offering the best balance. Balance is when you give just enough to make things fun and thrilling but take away just enough to make your time and effort worthy of the challenge and experience.

I don't mean to stray from the initial intent of what I wanted to say, other than to simply point out through my experience I have always been a proponent of discovering the Game as the retail version was delivered rather than being of the mindset Modding was a requirement. Sadly people that push others to Mod the Game before they even know the difference, often never return and the heavily Modded Game is all they ever had known. Even my group of friends who Modded SoC in 2007, moved on to other Games since they made their Game so easy, there was no challenge or struggle worthy of repeating.

While every Modder would love for fellow Players to remain and enjoy additional Mods, that is not the average experience. New games come out every year, new challenges and experiences await. People move on. The so-called bug-fixes Mods pushed as necessary must use "fixes" only warp and transcend the vanilla experience, becoming the only one or two journeys through the Zone that these Players ever have. This is the opposite of what GSC Game World had wanted people to experience.

Modding my Game ( Part 3 )

My most recent prior Game of SoC, using the 1.0005 version, was one where I took the Unmodded Game to the extreme. I decided to linger as long as possible in various levels. I never bought a single item from Sidorovich or Barkeep. I only used weapons I found and I used all the early basic armors in constant need like going through a box of Kleenex. Not until I got to Yantar would I allow myself the purchase of the Chaser-13 shotgun to replace my worn ones. Not until I got the necessary 4 to 5 unique artifacts needed to neutralize all anomalies did I start repairing my armors and using just one. I never entered Pripyat until exactly one year later Game Time from my first day waking up as an amnesiac in the Cordon.

I mention all of this to understand I simply wasn't going to repeat the same in this new 1.0006 Game. In other words been there, done that. I wanted to play a fairly basic retail version Game with the exception that I wanted to enjoy some of the content or unique items in the Game that one simply could not do without Modding. We all know the huge differences between the first Game and the second and third ( Clear Sky & Call of Pripyat ) is the revision of artifact names, visuals and properties and the ability to do upgrades to weapons and armors. Most modern Stalker Mods allow the Player the ability to initiate weapon and armor upgrades and those that don't are considered old school so to speak.

What did I want? I wanted to enjoy something I had never forgotten with my experience with Dez0wave's ground-breaking "Priboi Story" Mod. A Mod so influential, most of the ideas and concepts ended up used by GSC Game World in their last installment "Call of Pripyat". What I liked the most was being able to use unique weapons. The unique weapons of SoC are a one-of-a-kind items usually found on unique NPCs ( those with a single name ) but are sadly often recovered worn out and unusable due to excessive jamming and unreliability. I wanted a Mod that would let me enjoy and use these as much as I wanted. That would require repair of some kind.

Modding my Game ( Part 4 )

How to find a basic weapon repair Mod? Google of course. Whereas I expected to be taken to ModDB, instead the first 3 hits took me to nexusmods.com where the first entry was Axe's Repair Mod. This Mod required you to go to Sidorovich or Barkeep and you will be charged half the cost of the weapon/armor to repair it. No thanks. I wasn't looking for something I had to travel to specific people. I wanted something with the simplicity of Team Epic's brilliant Mod "Call of Chernobyl" where the Player could carry them with him and place about as needed.

The second choice was something called Repair Mod (Rus Eng Ger) (1.22) that was more of the same. The third choice was called Repair Kit (1.1) which looking at it now seems to be the same tool kit icon used by Team Epic. However I think I also searched ModDB at the same time after not liking the first choices on Google and I came across one called
Repair Kits Revamped that sounded good until I read that it required you to gather, transport and salvage used weapons and armors for parts. Nope. Nope. Nope. Still looking for something less tedious.

I tried a few more searches in various directions. One mentioned the ZRP. No, I'm not looking for a complex Mod that mindless people suggest thinking it's only for bug-fixes. The huge irony being it has actually created more bugs than it ever fixed in it's 10+ years of its never-ending, savant autism journey of endless tweaking. It's like the fidget spinner of Stalker Mods. I wanted something simple and basic that still gave me the vanilla experience. The ZRP has never been about the vanilla experience, despite people wrongly believing that using it that they were still having it.

Modding my Game ( Part 5 )

One thing I wanted to mention is that I had actually gotten a week or so into my Game totally Unmodded before I had given this more thought and decided I wanted weapon repair. No doubt after getting the Major's pistol at the Cordon bridge and thinking more about the unique weapons. I'm sure at one time when GSC considered having weapon repair by Screw or others, this would have enabled the Player to use the unique weapons. Probably for balance and hardship, that was dropped but the unique weapons remained like collectibles.

Now I was looking at a lot of different things, reading various people's opinions on this and that and somehow came across some Trader Mod where I thought the Trader would sell more items including repair kits. I downloaded it and gave it a glance and quickly realized I had made a mistake. Yes, the Traders opened up more things to sell but not repair kits. I also noticed all these unwanted changes like the menu screen music changing and suddenly I couldn't sell a Flesh part to an NPC that I could earlier. Crap. Another classic case of it doing too many "extra" things I didn't ask for and it didn't advertise in the main description.

I kept looking and then came back to the Repair Kits Revamped and noticed reading over the previous versions there was something called Repair Kits Revamped 1.03 and as it said "This is a bug fix update as well as a temporary change in functionality. I've removed salvage weapons from the mod. The current implementation required you to carry around more weight than feasible for the mod to be useful. I will be hopefully releasing version 1.04 in the near future which will add salvage back in and solve the issue of weight." This might be it. An earlier version without the unwanted salvage weapon requirement.

Modding my Game ( Part 6 )

I installed the Mod "Repair Kits Revamped 1.03"
http://www.moddb.com/mods/repair-kits-revamped/downloads/repair-kits-revamped-103

It was exactly what I wanted. The ability to buy semi-available portable tool kits from the Traders ( Sidorovich & Barkeep so far ) or find them from looting the dead. No hauling about used weapons. No salvaging parts from looted weapons or armors. It's very simple, they're way more inexpensive than I imagined ( or really liked ) and they're easy to use. Less than 50% life left in a gun or armor seems to require two repair kits. The image is of a small red tool box like you buy at Sears.

However there were some unwanted changes too. Like many Modders who want to give you one thing, the desire to make additional changes at the same time is too difficult to contain. This Modder decided that being able to carry weights past 49.9 kg up to 60 kg ( Unmodded Game ) made the game too easy so it was changed if you hit 50.0 kg you were immobilized. So the first thing I did was go back in and restore the weight restrictions to the original settings.

Then I was back to the trade restrictions problems. The Flesh part I could sell before to any NPC was now red-listed which is how the game displays forbidden to sell item with the shaded item now in red when the trade dialogue window is brought up. That was a problem for me. I never understood why NPCs were walking around with 5,000 rubles and all I could sell them were food or bandages. By the 3rd Game, Call of Pripyat, GSC got the formula right where you could sell to NPCs just about anything. That is what I wanted to implement but it looks like in order to do that, I had to actually understand the language in the files to edit it.

Shadow of Chernobyl on a Laptop ( 1.0006 )

Modding my Game ( Part 7 )

What I didn't fully realize yet was that I had new additional files from two different Mods. The Repair Kits Mod and the Trader Mod. In addition to the annoying change to the music, Sidorovich was now selling items I was used to not seeing so soon and having the struggle to earn them. The immediate problem was not what I could buy but what I could sell. SoC makes you haul all the weapons to a Trader. How much more convenient I thought if I could sell weapons or more items out in the field like I've done in other Mods. Call of Pripyat allowed you to do this too but they were restricted by needing to have a high level of being in top condition.

So again I used Google to help point me in the right direction to understand these files. I came across three very helpful links to explain things that I'm sharing here:

Editing trader files
http://sdk.stalker-game.com/en/index.php?title=Editing_trader_files

How do I edit what Sidrovich, or any trader, sells?
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/540331-stalker-shadow-of-chernobyl/44686768

Edit Trader Files
https://gamebanana.com/tuts/7043

* * * * *

It's easy to understand this. What the Trader sells:

[trader_generic_buy] What the trader buys from you, for how much

And at first this seemed easy to understand:

[supplies_start] What the trader has to offer

However that has additional language for before & after specific events.

Then the third step was this:

[trader_start_sell] What the trader sells

Which means selling is in two stages. What is offered and what is sold. Confused yet? I had to read all three links several times to get into the gist of this. Basically I came away with realizing that both the second and third listing must be in perfect alignment. If it's offered, it must be sold. If it is sold, it must be offered. It's beyond me to try and figure out why this method was created. I simply had to do as it wanted. A mistake on my part in editing the files would result in it not working or worse, a visit from my friend bug-trap. It was destiny we would soon meet.

Modding my Game ( Part 8 )

At this point it would really bog things down to try to explain exactly all the steps I did in editing. Better if I try to keep this going with describing the basics of what I did and what went right or wrong. I found the files that had all the Traders involved but there was also one not with a Trader's name but was just general trading file. That's the one I used to be able to buy & sell items to regular NPCs. The one table has to do with how often an item may come up and the other is the ratio of what it sells for. I made it to where I could sell most anything but the unique weapons and all the armors.

This took care of my immediate selling mutant parts problems. I got emboldened to try adjusting things with Sidorovich. While I knew I could get an AK or Abakan fairly early in the Game, the thing I didn't like the most was thinking I would have to wait all the way to getting to Yantar for a decent shotgun. Really? Doing the Agroprom Underground and X-18 with a sawn-off shotgun? That thought wasn't really very appealing. If I'm going to Mod a few things, the thing I wanted the most was a decent shotgun. So I successfully added the Chaser-13 to Sid's inventory and was able to buy one. One is all I needed with repair kits.

I guess at this point I was pleased with my accomplishment. I decided to go further. The next thing I wanted was a PSO-1 scope. As I was editing the two areas of what is offered and what is sold, trying to get them just right...it didn't work. I went back in and looked over everything and tried again. While I was there I tried to add other things. I wanted more regular grenades and also the type used with the grenade launchers on guns. This didn't work either and soon, to make a longer story short, I got inescapable bug-trap crashes at game launch. All was fubar.

Modding my Game ( Part 9 )

I attempted to go back in to the files I was editing and look for my mistake. Was it something that was not in both groups of offering and selling that were not exactly the same? Was it a comma, semi-colon or other key that I messed up on? I spent a couple of hours trying to undue my unknown error. Eventually I realized the only way out of this was to simply remove the Mods and start over. I removed all the files and reviewed the contents of just the "Repair Kits Revamped 1.03" and added it again, this time not having two Mods mixed in together.

Looks like the music changing was actually in the Trader Mod so that was good but again I had the weight carrying reduction I had to overcome. No problem. That was easy. Luckily a manual save I had made, a few before my last editing session went bonkers, loaded without crashing. This meant I got to keep the Chaser-13 so I was happy. Sidorovich was back to all his limited normal Unmodded inventory. I was also back to not being able to trade with others. When I looked in the "Repair Kits Revamped 1.03" files, I did not see the general trade with other NPCs files. I also did not see all the other Trader files like I did before. I think it was only Sid, Barkeep and maybe Sakharov. I went back to the Trader Mod ( I'll try to get the name later since I'm writing this on my PC and it's on my Laptop ) and found it is where that file originated.

That worked out for me since I didn't have it in the "Repair Kits Revamped 1.03" Mod. So my mistake and experience of combining two Mods actually allowed me to have a file I really wanted by happy accident. I went back and added this single file and made my adjustments to it so I could trade again like I was in Call of Pripyat or the Call of Chernobyl Mod. I was happy. So I had a big load of guns to sell and I was up at the Cordon level changer with some other Loners. I sold an NPC several AKs and pistols and made some money, being satisfied that I didn't have to haul them all the way to Sidorovich. Immediately after closing the trading dialogue, the NPC I just sold them to, dropped them on the ground like he was vomiting them. What? That never happened to any other items I was selling to NPCs. Then I quickly realized NPCs could only carry ONE pistol and ONE rifle/shotgun at a time. This ruined my entire idea of selling loot on the fly.

Shadow of Chernobyl on a Laptop ( 1.0006 )

Modding my Game ( Part 10 )

I looked on my Laptop to find the name of the other Mod I had installed. It's called "Hal's Traders Overhauled" and I got it from ModDB. http://www.moddb.com/mods/hals-traders-overhauled/downloads/hals-traders-overhauled-pure

I believe I used the wonky ModDB search engine results which explains how I ended up with it and misunderstood what it all does. It's too brief description says "This is version 1.4, it makes the games prices and sell values more like they usually are but traders are still unique in some areas. If you want the same old stalker experience but with my unique traders, download this file. Note: This does NOT make the game harder, it just doesn't make it easier like the LITE edition does." As I mentioned before, the Modder that made this felt compelled to change the Music since you can't possibly have better Trader inventory without an unwanted change to that. It was this Mod that had the beneficial "Trader_generic" file that I used to expand trading with other NPCs.

Now if you're an experienced Modder who does this type of thing more often then of course you know easier ways to access this or that. However I'm just here to explain my experience and how I ended up where I have. I didn't want to take the time to figure out how to get NPCs to carry all the excess guns I was trying to sell them. That was not my primary focus. I wanted to get back to playing my Game. I got the repair kits I wanted. I could take them with me and use them on the go.

I immediately felt the downside to this choice. Before getting the repair kits, I'm in the Cordon wearing my 2nd or 3rd armor I had collected, a Bandit jacket. My movements and tactics were one where I felt every hit of every bullet. I was strategic and cautious in my actions. I went out of my way to be careful and to try to take the least amount as damage as possible to my limited resources. All that changed in my mindset after getting armor & weapon repair. Sure, I could pretend that I didn't have it and attempt to go back to the way I was before, but you can't fool yourself forever. This was the price I paid for Modding my Game. I guess a more specific Mod to only work on guns and not armors would solve that but I wanted to get back to my Game.

I've tried a few mods on SoC but ultimately returned back to vanilla as there were always something in a mod I didn't like. I've played Priboy Story and really liked it. I've tried other conversion mods but can't remember the names and I don't have them any more on my computer.

***************

In other news: Duty have turned green. I took a task from Freedom clearing out Rader and made a trip to Radar via Red Forest, on the way back I accidentally helped out some Duty folks fighting some Monoliths. Later on when I returned back to Rostok all Duty were green.

Btw, when I arrived at Radar via Red Forest I popped up in a group of 3 Monolith and got killed on the spot. Reload my save from right before the transition point, went through to Radar and yeps, they were waiting for me and managed to make me loose my 96/2. I legged it inside their base and hid ind the corner behind the tower there and waited there with my shotgun picking them down as they showed up one at a time. One of them even brought back my 96/2 to me, guess he liked the upgrades on it. After that it was only taking out the 3 guys in the watch towers in the other end of the base.

Have just returned from a trip to Sunken Hospital (or what it's called) checking out a stash I got quite some time ago. Lots of Monolith but with the loot I got from them and the contents of the stash it was well worth it.

PCDania~

I was kind of waiting to hear about the status of your armor upgrades. Weapons you can easily find but the unique armors are the big item that are more unique to various Factions and locations. The 5 artifact Merc Exoskeleton suit is the best in my opinion. The Merc SEVA is the best SEVA in the Game. The Freedom Exo is a good 4 artifact slot suit. The regular Loner Exo and Loner SEVA are just average and generally not worth fully upgrading when you can get better.

There's a lot of Clear Sky Armors that are unique. However we don't get the really good CS-1 from Clear Sky. Most all the Clear Sky Armors aren't worth upgrading or wearing because they are all just average and nothing special. The Duty Armors are the worst because they have the least or none for artifact slots and they are really heavy.

Your story is funny where you had your upgraded weapon taken and you got it back. I've had my weapon taken from me by a rifle butt to the head where both ally and enemy has hit me. The worst I did is when looting, I don't necessarily take everything, often leaving pistols behind or low level weapons like AKSU or Vipers. I accidently clicked on a needed artifact in my inventory transferring excess loot I couldn't carry and lost an artifact that way in the process.

I thought you would have more to say about Limansk or Dead City. Not much to the hospital level. At least it's not one way and you can turn around. The X-19 Lab has lots of mutants. You have to rush to the end to get some of them before they are killed and too spoiled to harvest the parts. You can also leave the level and come back to get a 2nd helping of valuable mutant parts.

* * * * *

It's June 19th in my game. That's about seven weeks and I'm in Yantar finally getting ready to go under and do X-16. Pretty fast Game for me generally speaking.

Limansk: Loners guarding the place having a shootout with Monolith now and then intersperced with the rare bandit. Generally a peaceful place. There is more going on in Red Forest with Loners, Bandits and Monolith duking it out all the time.

Dead City: I find the map is too small, I better like the Lost Alpha version. If I had a say I would use the fighting as in CoC but the map from Lost Alpha.

Regarding armors:

As soon as I could afford it I bought the Sunrise Bodysuit. Later on I added a Screen Helmet, mostly for better protection against Pscionic. Think I bought it from Clear Sky. I fully agree their armors are not worth writing home about. I haven't checked out the Duty armors, only thing I've used them for is repairs, getting side quests and naturally selling stuff I don't need. I haven't even tried the Arena yet.

As soon as I could I bought the Mercenary Scientific Suit from the Merc trader and upgraded it to 5 containers. I had to visit Dead City quite some times before the trader had it in stock.

Yesterday when I returned from my visit to the Hospital, the Merc trader had an Exo for sale so I made a quick save and bought it, when upgrading it I happily found out I could upgrade it to 5 containers .

Another big surprise I've had was when I returned through the level changer from X-18, a short moment after me arrived a Monolith, luckily his aim was pretty bad. It's one thing seing NPC's wander on the road between the maps, another having them pop up right behind you.

In another mod (think it was a version of Lost Alpha) I sometimes crossed path with Monoliths when crossing over from Radar to Pripyat Outskirts, first time was quite a surprise as you can imagine as normally one don't see anyone on the Pripyat Outskirts side of that transition point when arriving from Radar. I solved that problem by sneaking over having my shotgun at the ready

PS: Wish there were a headshot counter in CoC

Edit: Just found a neutral bandit in Jupiter at that huge silo. He has a yellow star, name is Bodya Undertaker *Bandit* (written in yellow) and I can chat and trade with him, even do a little job for him. He asked for some radio protectant and I gave him 4 and got 300 Ru, a VOG-25 grenade, 60 9x39mm SP-5 and 60 5.45x39mm rounds. What gives

Edit #2: He turned red when he got attacked by a Pseudogiant. Looted some ammo from him.

The great thing about Limansk is taking out the Monolith at the unfinished building on the hill next to the radar. You can usually pick up some Gauss Guns and RPG-7. Hopefully you figured out the same location is two-way if you do some scaffolding jumping into a window to come back if you go farther north. Limansk is a great shortcut to get to the Red Forest and escape to from the same place. I'm glad Team Epic deactivated the anomaly obstacle course from Clear Sky.

Yes, Dead City size-wise is a disappointment from the Lost Alpha version. Don't ever expect Team Epic to adopt anything from Lost Alpha as there is a lot of animosity between the two teams and projects. I would love a Call of Chernobyl where all the levels exclusively found in LA are brought to it...or the CoC A-life and squad based action with Companions and Faction choices brought to LA. It's just never going to happen.

If you upgrade the Mercenary Exo to get the most weight carrying capacity, combined with the use of artifacts, it's hard to ever go back down to any other suit including the great Merc SEVA. Here's why:

Call of Chernobyl: The Fifth Element
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuYoshl3ME4&t=33s

Here's some more fun:

Call of Chernobyl: Pseudogiant attacks Freedom Base
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2g5urE5R4Pk

Call of Chernobyl: Zaton M203 Demonstration
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRGlshg9jEo

Be sure to set to 720p or better as YouTube defaults to a crappy lower setting on the videos.

Forgot to mention that in the Zaton and Jupiter levels you will find both friendly ( neutral yellow ) and enemy ( red ) Mercenaries and Bandits. It's some leftover code from Call of Pripyat which I consider a nice bug. The only time you have to be careful is with mixed groups ( yellow and red ) similar to when Freedom is mixed with Bandits. Also if you attack enemy Bandits and Mercenaries in on-line range of yellow Bandits and Mercenaries, they may all turn "red" on you. Just be careful.

* * * * *

Not much new with my Game. I'm just picking up all the armors found above ground in Yantar ( 3 ) and knowing there are more ( 3 ) below ground for my trip through X-16. Plus I gave the sequence of mutant parts to Sakharov and all the 5 artifacts he wanted to get a free SEVA suit. I'm still going to wear the Tourist suit though as I can carry up to 70kg, it's not as heavy as the better protection suits and I can sprint in it.

Went from Jupiter to Pripyat and cleared out all the Monoliths and visited the hotel. Then went to Army Warehouses via Radar. A few meter before the transition point to Radar I found a 'red' Loner in Exo stalking a 'Green' Loner. Made a save and followed them around. The 'red' Loner didn't care about me except taking cover if I armed myself. After the 'Green' loner was killed the 'red' loner attacked and killed me. I've also seen a 'Yellow' bandit in Zaton.

Yes, a upgraded Merc Exo with 5 slots and most weight carrying capacity is the best armor solution.

I can see from your videos there's been quite some balance changes from back then to 1.4.22. Haven't seen a wrenced yet and the artefacts you show the specs of are different from what I see.

A shame the CoC and the LA teams can't find out to cooperate. Combining the best from both mods would be the best STALKER mod if one like the best balance and challenge. It CoC would also be great with the LA version of Darkscape instead of the boring place it is now.

Have just returned from X-8, looks like the team didn't touch anything regarding enemies in that building. Had my difficulties with one of the Burers, it could walk through walls just like I remember seing in CoP but I managed to take it down. Most challenging fight against monsters I've had yet. 3 Burers able to throw those compressed air cylinders at me, all in the same room, and one of them able to walk through walls. Well, I manage to knife all of them without dying though it was very close.

Made a trip down to Great Swamps collecting some stuff I've stored down there. Military in Agroprom seems to be on the lookout for me, caught me off guard at the anomaly field close to the transition point to Great Swamps. After dying and reloading a couple times I managed to shoot down the chopper without getting killed by the grunts and then take cover in the bushes at the top of the anomaly letting them come to me. Didn't want to risk having the military laying in wait for me when I return from Great Swamps.

Edit: Forgot I got a stash in Zaton I don't expect to be able to collect. It's behind a locked door in the shed at the cranes. AFAIR the door is opened as part of a CoP quest, and I haven't found any CoP quests yet.

I have been playing this mod called MLR 8.3 for Call of Chernobyl the last few days and i see some changes closely to Lost Alpha maps combined with CoC maps. Garbage is one of them:

Cordon is huge:

Some of the messages in the PDA:

One thing about this mod is that its not a misery style gameplay meaning 5 different variants of the same weapon with 10 different cleaning kits and spending 30 minutes organizing your inventory. Its based off CoC 1.4.22 with alot of nice touches like new places in cordon (found a cave in cordon) new maps and unique quests that keep you busy. The graphics are left vanilla, authors leave it to the player if they want anything special. Plays very smooth.

It is a russian mod and the English translation is done. I haven't encountered anything untranslated, SashaRed did a great job translating it. This is a hidden gem. Here is the moddb link for the mod if interested:

PCDania~

One thing I have noticed is that when you first enter a level with a high concentration of enemies like the Red Forest, Pripyat or the CNPP, it does not remain that way in repeated trips. For that reason, once you conquer a difficult level, don't always assume repeated trips will be not worth the effort if it was a huge expenditure of resources the first time.

You can often find members of your same Faction or others ( friendly or neutrals ) who may get into firefights on the squad based level due to wounding or killing each other's members. In your case, the "red" Loner was always your enemy but they were simply concentrating on another NPC they wanted to kill more than you, until they accomplished that and it was your turn next.

The bulk of my videos are from 1.3 version so you may see many differences. When I most recently entered X-8, I took 3 or 4 Companions. As Companions can do sometimes, they take off on their own. One of them got to the room with the Burers before the rest of us could and he was killed there. I think I lobbed so many M203 in there from the hallway, the Burers never had a chance.

The tough part in the Marshes can be the Scientist Escort Missions when it is a location near the Military. Remember that the Ecologists are neutral so they don't care about your affiliations. For that reason, always make a Manual Save before requesting the mission. That way you can reload it for a better ( nearer, farther, harder, easier, etc. ) location as you choose.

The small shack at the Zaton Docks was accessible ( and the stash therein ) in earlier versions. Now it is locked in 1.4. Likewise the Freedom Base Armory and the Mercenary Base Armory ( did you spy it through the crack? ) are locations that the Player has never been able to reach. I once had a Mercenary pass through the vault door, step on one of the mines and set off a chain of explosions that scattered the contents.

* * * * *

PressurE~

Thanks for that information about the other Mod. usually I keep up with all the latest and most popular Mods from the many Stalker Facebook groups so it's always interesting to learn about new content and ideas.

The whole idea of Team Epic's Call of Chernobyl has been a huge Modder's resource for other Modders to utilize the basic resources and set-up and create many different things. It's a great idea and benefit to the entire Stalker Community.

I have not been back to my Game in over a week or so. Things taking up my time in real life means I've had no time for Games, TV or anything.

Finally got Freedom turned 'Green'

Now I only need the mercenaries. One good thing is it's now much easier to do assassin tasks for the mercs, simply find the guy, ask him or his leader to follow me and then lead them into a trap. Some might find me being a strange guy but I don't like doing it evne though it's just a game.

I always make a save before asking for a task as I don't know how difficult it willl be. I also makes saves before and shortly after transition points and right before I know there will be a firefight.

I have not found the crack showing the merc armory but guessed it must be behind that vault door.

Like you I've also noted areas with a high concentration of enemies only is like that on the first visit if you clear the map on the first visit.

**************
Thanks PressurE, I'm downloading as I write this. I will finish CoC before I take a look at MLR.

Actually I don't find that strange at all. I too play with my real life morality when I Game. If I can avoid having to directly kill a friendly or neutral Faction member, by letting our enemies or mutants do the work for me, I will. Only as a last resort or running out of time will I do what I have to do.

In my current Game of SoC, I have found that a knife from behind has been way more successful than a silenced weapon from behind. SoC is funny. If your target can see or hear you, it alerts others. If they cannot, then often other NPCs that may see an action remain neutral and don't turn into enemies.

Glad to hear you got Freedom "green" finally. Now for the DC Mercs.

Hmm, a good deal of Merc turned 'Green' after I finished the latest job. Hopefully the remainder turns after I take a few more jobs.

Edit: If one stays out of an area for some days it looks like the local enemies slowly turns back to full force. Both the military in Agroprom and the Monolith in Pripyat works like that. Bandits seems to be trying to take over most of Cordon, Great Swamp and Garbage. Am going to Dark Valley this evening (9th of March) and will check out the Bandit camp there seing if it is fully staffed again.

As you probably know, every time you enter Dead City after being away for awhile, you get a dedicated Bandit attack with sometimes some Military thrown in. This is the most action you will get hanging out in the level. If you linger for a day or so, you'll get smaller, more disorganized Bandit attacks usually going for the Party HQ ( building with bust of Lenin in lobby ) or the other 2 story building with the really long hallways. Every once in awhile some random Loner squad may appear but they are only passing through.

There were some earlier problems with some of the Mercenaries not being able to enter the Party HQ building to seek shelter during Emissions & Psi Storms so that's just some extra loot for you when that happens. One of my favorite things to do was to lay a couple of knapsacks down next to the Merc Trader, one for my personal supplies and another for loot to process and then make short excursions into Limansk for half a day or more and then come back. You can make a Manual Save and reload the "assault" & "assassin" jobs to have a location in Limansk. Let the Monolith or Mutants kill your Loner targets and you will find Emissions/Psi Storms wipe out a lot of the NPCs there too.

The Hangar in Garbage is like a mini-Bandit Base just minus and RT & Trader. I even have a preferred short-cut that goes right by it. Leaving the Cordon, I prefer the level changer from the Base where the RT stays. I go west from there to the LC, enter Garbage, go straight north through the edge of the vehicle scrapyard, between the two piles right up to the outside of the Bandit Base ( Hangar ) and then due east along the outside wall and then, using the boxes and debris as cover over to the Bus Stop. From the Bus Stop you can dispatch any nearby mutants or Bandits outside their gate and then make a run straight north to the Checkpoint going to Rostok. I've used this path, fully loaded ( not being able to sprint ) at night, in heavy fog and various other conditions. The other LC usually has Military in the Cordon and is a longer road to get up there.

Have you been to Darkscape yet? There's a BTR-70 at the Gas Station you need to watch out for. Good place to spend the night is the building down the dirt road in the middle of the woods. No other shelter from Psi Storms or Emissions in the entire level so time your ventures wisely. Likewise before undertaking any multi-level journey, wait for Emissions/Psi Storms to pass and use the time between them for great distances to cover. Sometimes this is more about being concerned with the safety of your Companions than your own. If you are totally by yourself then it is less of a worry.

Yes, I have noted how Dead City works. What the "Assault" task goes then I quickly found out that finding the correct Star-loner (Loners are Green) and ask him to follow me would trigger "Task completed, return for payment" Only once I couldn't find out which Loner was the target as it's the building they stay in that seems to be the target. I took a few Loners on a 'visit' at the Monoliths, when they got killed I returned to their building, this time "Task completed" was triggered when I asked a Loner to follow me so I could return to the Mercs and get my payment.

When going from Cordon to Garbage I usually go through the Western transition point and then through the small vehicle yard, that way I can check the two anomaly spots for artefacts. I then head to the road and over the pile at the bus stop thereby passing between the two groups of mutants (there are often mutants in the bus stop.) I go down between the two huge oil tanks which give me a good point for taking down eventual enemies in the ruined building and at the transition point. On the way from Garbage to Cordon I go through the military checkpoint as the building gives good cover when taking them down.

It's a long time sinse I was in Darkscape the last time. On my first visit I took out the BTR using a few F1 grenades. Pretty boring place, wish they had used the version in LA, secret tunnels and all. The tunnels could be a good place for targets to hide out with a few body guards, maybe make a tiny bandit base in the cabin in the woods. IMO it would make more sense having the bandits in the Cordon factory (the one Sid tells you to clear out) coming from Darkscape instead of Garbage.

What companions goes I only use them when forced to like if I get an assassin task. You know, tell them to follow me and lead them somewhere where mutants or my enemies (soldiers/bandits/Monolith) will kill them.

Looks like it doesn't take much time for a base to get refilled with NPC's if one leaves a map. I cleared out the bandit base in Dark Valley, went to Rostok and slept there, returned to Dark Valley and found it fully manned with bandits again.

Edit: Does corpses count towards NPC's? -meaning a camp is at its max with say 20 NPC's (not counting visitors) but if there are 3 corpses of the faction belonging to the camp then there are only 17 living NPC's.

What I do is I usually always have Companions. However I use them as I travel, entering and leaving levels as fire support. When I arrive in a level I usually find a safe place to park them. I get them to "stay" there and I am free to go out alone and do as I want. They are too slow too take with me on most operations but whenever I escort Scientists ( who are slow too ) I will take along my Companions for fire support to protect the Scientists.

For example in the Cordon, I will leave my Companions in the same building as the Repair Tech but all the way down the hall right next to the jail cell. I will also get them to duck around the corner out of visual sight where if any enemies do enter the building, they will not see them. In the Marshes I will leave them at the Fishing Hamlet where I keep my main stash since the Clear Sky Base has none. In Garbage at the Checkpoint LC inside the trailer. I may assault the Bandit Base Hangar by myself but once inside and having defeated all the Bandits, I will call my Companions to join me. They arrive as I'm looting and cover me and we leave together as I may be overloaded and having to move slower.

In the Dark Valley I'll leave them far south at the Pig Farm and may call them after I defeat the Bandits at their base and need the same overloaded escort departure. The Freedom Base HQ in the AW serves as my parking spot in that level. In Dead City I hide them in the jail cell above the Merc Repair Tech. In Limansk, hidden on the 2nd floor corner of the Clear Sky "Bandit House" where I'll lay down a knapsack as my main stash. In the Agroprom at the Loner Base all the way in the back behind the two cylinder structures on the ground floor. In the Red Forest in the bathroom hidden underneath Forester. Yanov Station basement for Jupiter and the Skadovsk for Zaton are no brainers.

There's just a few levels I feel less comfortable leaving them at or for that matter lingering for long periods of time. Truck Cemetery is one of them. I've lost more Companions in that level than any other. Emissions and Psi Storms are terrible on Companions too since they have trouble getting inside trailers and metal containers other than the one in the upper north-east corner that I make my main base. Likewise I don't like to linger in Yantar due to the non-stop Zombies & Mutants.

Even if you don't like continuous Companions, as you probably know they are great to sell junk weapons to since they buy stuff at somewhere around 60-70% or better condition as opposed to everyone else who seem to demand 85% ( approximate numbers ) or better. In other words, hire them, sell them crap, un-hire them.

As you may have discovered, you can't have Companions, leave them in one level and go to another. They behave erratically and may not be there where you left them when you return. For that reason, is why when leaving a level, I take them with me and then park them in a safe place. I also use my Companions to carry extra ammo and supplies so I don't have to. I always make sure they have superior weapons but never give a Companion an RPG-7 because they become idiots.

I don't believe dead bodies count for anything in determining re-spawn numbers.

* * * * *

Eventually I want to provide more information on my SoC Mods and what I discovered but not for awhile, once I get back to my Game.

Shadow of Chernobyl on a Laptop ( 1.0006 )

I haven't played my Monolith Game since November 2017 and it's now March 2018. I've been playing SoC 1.0006 on my new Gaming Laptop and coming back to this Game was a total disorientation of everything from the key commands, the larger screen size and what I was doing. All I remembered it was time to get back to Pripyat, I had a full load of Mutant parts I needed to sell and no one I meet has any money to buy them. Upon arriving back in Pripyat, several Mutants decided to throw me a party.

Modding my Game ( Part 11 )

* Please go back and read Parts 9 & 10 to continue where my problem was when I was last discussing this *

My Modded Game now included the ability to sell just about everything to other NPCs. This was a great feature that helped me reduce the usual chore of carrying large amounts of loot back to the Trader to sell for profit. As a safety feature it did not include armors ( that I never sell anyway to anyone ) and the unique weapons that I was using and carrying, now having the ability to repair them. My basic changing of the buying/selling values worked for me with the one exception I mentioned earlier.

I could not sell mass amounts of pistols or rifles to other NPCs. In fact they would only take one at a time. Selling a rifle would make them drop the one that they had unless they had none ( a common situation for Rookie Loners with only a pistol ) however unless I put ammo for them in the weapon I was selling, they would not use it. In my Unmodded Games selling large quantities of 9 X 18 made a lot of profit. In my Modded Game, using the unique Viper that used 9 x 18 meant that I wasn't selling any and I needed money from selling used weapons and mutant parts.

Modders with more experience could fix this barrier I had to selling more rifles and pistols to other NPCs. All I understood was that the Game appeared to limit these items due to the way the Player's Inventory only allowed a pistol and rifle for use in each slot. However this problem soon turned into the greatest possible outcome I could ever hope for in my situation. Since my primary focus of Modding my Game was my desire to use and repair the unique weapons, it meant that I now had the ability to acquire the unique weapons immediately from neutral NPCs who possessed them.

When I first arrived in Rostok I met Oleg "Fiend" Gusarov and traded him an ordinary rifle for his unique "Sniper Obokon". I did this by simply opening up the trade window and selling him another weapon. When this act was initiated he would drop the desirable weapon on the ground. However you had to be quick to retrieve it because NPCs would often change their mind, grab back the weapon they were carrying and then drop the rifle you just sold them. You also had to be careful that other NPCs in close proximity didn't snatch it too. Now I had the best scoped rifle using 5.45 in the Game with vastly improved optics over a regular PSO-1. I traded an ordinary pistol for the unique "noiseless Kora" from Sparrow. I got Barin's unique Groza. I got two ordinary TRs-301s from other Loners. I got the VLA from the mysterious trenchcoat Loner in the Bar. I now had some superior unique weapons. My load out was the "Sniper Obokon", the unique Viper shooting 9 x 18 ( from the end of the train tunnel in Garbage ) and the Chaser 13 shotgun I got from Sidorovich.

What all this meant is I no longer had to hang out with or track those unique NPCs with unique weapons, with the fear they could suddenly leave Rostok or die. No fear that someone else could be grabbing their unique weapons and then leaving Rostok with it to never be seen again or lost on a body that disappears after death. Additionally any unique weapon found in any level on any NPC could be mine by simple trading unless they were an enemy I had to kill. What initially appeared to be a bad glitch in my Modding turned out to be the greatest achievement I've ever had in any Game. To me, acquiring, using and repairing the unique weapons was the ultimate Mod. So many Mods add too many weapons while the greatest set of weapons already existed in the Unmodded Game.

Modding my Game ( Part 12 )

My Modded Game was pretty much where I wanted it to be. I had the ability to repair weapons and armors by adding someone's Mod to do that, even though I was using an intermediate version that was not the author's final vision that included the unwanted by me gun salvaging. While my initial attempts to expand the items Sidorovich had sold had netted me a single Chaser 13, my amateurish efforts at going further had bungled that, which having two Mods ( one unwanted by accident ) didn't help. However most of all I had expanded trading with other NPCs, and this resulted in the added bonus of being able to get the unique weapons early through trading rather than the usual hard work I had anticipated.

One thing early that had happened in my Game that I had heard other people complain about ( but that I had never seen myself ever in a decade ) was when Sidorovich's bunker door refused to open. Since this was my first time using 1.0006 and I had never seen it in 1.0004 or 1.0005, I wondered if it was related. I do know that over the years this has been one of the main selling points to entice people to use the no-longer-vanilla ZRP Mod. That's a place I didn't want to go due to making the Game so much easier. The tiny repair mod I added was nothing compared to it. Like all my Game bugs over the years, I always tried to come up with my own solutions to overcome any so-called Game breaking problems.

Of course without the ability to unholster any weapons or raise my knife, I was lacking the ability to use my weapons or hands to resolve the problem. However I wasn't out of luck. I immediately noticed some ammo crates right outside his broken vault door. They were stacked and while I couldn't grab one to pick it up, I could use my body to slam against them. I did this several times and eventually my repeated efforts banging the ammo crate up against the door got it to crack open. That was a good sign. I kept at it until it became wide enough for me to get my body inside the opening. Then I simply pushed it back as far as it would go with success. Not having more experience with this, I just assumed when I finally left the level that it would go back to normal when I returned. That was not the case. It remains broken and the same no matter what. However I didn't have to add a Mod to find a solution. For that I was pleased.

CoC: Finally got all Mercenaries to turn Green

Regarding Sids door: I have had the same problem but managed to open it using those ammo crates. I can remember I placed a ammo crate in the doorway so the door couldn't close fully but I can't remember if it actually worked.

Good deal. The Mercenaries are the hardest to turn all green. I could get the Trader & Repair Tech to do so but not always the others. I think this was due to the high rate of casualties ( Bandits, mutants, psi storms & emissions ) where the replacement NPCs were not around long enough to matter. Now that you have 6 of the 9 Factions green ( which has always been one of my primary missions in the unstructured Call of Chernobyl ) you are now free to hire Companions everywhere. Hire them, sell them junk and un-hire them or get some Companions in Exoskeletons or SEVAs, arm them with high end weapons and have an expert killing crew.

Some people playing CoC have a lot of difficulty deciding what to do. They are used to being constantly told where and when to go by their PDA or other important NPCs directing them. The lack of strict guidance is what I enjoy the most. I'm on no time limit. I can hang out in one level for a few days or I can be on the move constantly and go though half a dozen levels in one day. I may or may not have mentioned this but I never use the sleep function. I turned it off in the Game Menu. I also decided to turn off the helicopters. Sure I tried them in earlier versions. I just got tired of a single soldier out in the open being shot at and calling for air support because he felt threatened. I discovered that it was actually harder because that same soldier will call for ground forces to attack instead.

I remember being at the Cordon Pig Farm Base. This was an earlier version where Loners rarely hung out there and often I was alone with just the Repair Tech. I killed a soldier out by the road as it was near evening. A light fog had rolled in. I was back in the rear on the roof directly above the door to the RT. Suddenly more soldiers ( and not the typical helicopter ) came in full force to assault the base. a few came I fought off. The fog got thicker. Darkness came and more and more soldiers came in for the attack. It was tough as hell but I held on and by morning there were 20+ military dead all over the courtyard. Good times.

Regarding companions, I plan on continuing only using them when that is the only option I have. What finances goes I'm good for 5+ mill RU.

When ever I see a chopper I shoot it down. The military is so pissed at me now that when they see me there is a very high chance they send everything and the sink at me so I prefer not having a chopper to worry about. I've also noted that shooting one grunt means high chance getting into a larger firefight. If one can find a good bush it's just a question of having a bit of patience as they only shoot when they can see you.

Re choppers, I wonder where Monolith get their choppers from, think I have downed 5 or so in Limansk and likely counting. Wish choppers didn't have a habbit of hiding in the clouds. Btw, I have a few times seen NPC's shooting at a chopper but never seen them downing one, most times they just seeks cover if a chopper gets too close to their liking.

I do sleep but I have sleep deprivation turned off.

Edit: Does Noah in Zaton serve any purpose in CoC? I ask because I found him dead.

Companions are definitely the biggest do or don't in CoC. Some people hate having to manage them. They don't move as fast, they get killed fairly easy and they crimp the playing style of many players. I can fully understand people not wanting to deal with them and to simply play the game like they've always done. However a good crew of Companions with better armors and weapons can be pretty fun and the closest thing one can get to the feeling of multiplayer or co-op without the most hated feature of idle and pointless chatter. Your Companions will never make insults or jokes about your mother, poop or your sexual orientation.

Knowing they are slow gives you the ability to get slightly ahead and be the point-man to uncover any trouble or ambushes. Having the ability to use the keyboard commands for them to engage or not engage your enemies, be them men or mutants is a big help to keep them from getting side-tracked or blowing your stealth. As shown in the video I shared, I use the feature where you are able to mark a spot and then another for them to patrol from point A to B. However I'm using it to mark A to B in the exact same spot to make all of them stand in one specific place. I found this helped greatly to keep them from blocking passages or doorways when they are following me. Plus I can get them to a safe spot and hide them too.

In my Loner game I had toggled the choppers off. When I was a Monolith Player, I got the choppers in Limansk and almost shot at them the first time before I realized they were mine. You really need to play as a Monolith Player before you move on to other Mods. The experience is a lot of fun and it puts a totally different mindset and operating procedure on the Game to have to totally pick different locations to operate from and to treat all the "safe" locations you had as a Loner that have now become "hostile" locations. I could have attacked the Skadovsk and killed everyone inside but I simply didn't want to. I do think I killed everyone inside the Jupiter Mobile Lab but I can't remember if I left that action in my Game or I went back to a Manual Save before I did that.

Noah serves no purpose. In 1.4 they took away the two Compass artifacts you could get off his dead body. FYI: the Heart of Oasis is there ripe for the picking in the usual place.

* * * * *

Adding a 1 TB NVMe M2 SSD hard drive and another 8GB of Memory to my Laptop. Should be back in action shortly. I left my Game in Yantar just prior to going to the X-16 Underground.

Good to know Noah serves no purpose. Would have hated going back all those hours of gaming.

When I have finished (if that even is possible) playing as a Loner I had actually thought it would be a good idea trying to play as a Monolith.

Strange things are happening. On my way to the NPP I saw a group of 3 Yellow Mercs in Zaton. On one of my trips from the NPP to Zaton I got attacked by a group of Red Mercs. Likely that old CoP bug but I really hope the Mercs in Dead City are still all Green.

I've found the Compass in the mines in Red Forest and I also found the Heart of the Oasis. I found out the portals down there were active but couldn't remember how to trigger the heart so I cheated a bit and checked online. I just wish their effects made them worth actually using.

-------------

I had just shot my way through the NPP and cleared about half the area North of it. On my way back I took the transition point to the West so I didn't have to go through the NPP when going back to Zaton. I had just cleared the tiny military camp and were close to the bushes a short way from the transition to Zaton when a large group of Monolith arrived. I just managed to hide in a bush right as they saw me. Two of them -armed with RPGs- headed directly my way but fortunately could not see me in the bush. I managed to take them both down but found I was unable to fight the remainder without them seing me. Just as I made ready to leg it to the empty military camp for better cover, a heavily armoured and armed soldier arrived on the scene and took on the Monoliths. His distraction gave me the oppotunity to take them down (believe he managed two of them). Unfortunately (luckily for me) the soldier didn't survive.

Edit: Vent from Zaton to NPP. Right inside in NPP there is a red brick building. When I arrived it was at the same time as 3 Bloodsuckers and a Chimera. It must have been quite a funny sight. Me standing with my left shoulder against the building and the 3 Bloodsuckers running counter-clock wise around the building with me firing my Eliminator against them when they turned the corner infront of me, and reloading it when they dissapeared around the corner behind me Luckily the Chimera was busy jumping around on the other side of the building until I had killed the Bloodsuckers. The Chimera I took care of with my knife A shame I don't have a video of it

Shadow of Chernobyl on a Laptop ( 1.0006 )

Your yellow or red Mercs in Zaton or Jupiter have no bearing on your relations of your Mercs back in the other parts of the Game. Likewise your yellow Bandits in the same levels will not help you improve relations towards that Faction in other levels of the game. It's like leftover code from CoP that Team Epic didn't totally remove. It's not a bad thing and I actually like it because it adds another dimension to the game you don't find in any other locations. Just as I warned you before, when you get a mix of yellow and red, the yellow will turn to red if you engage both groups in proximity of each other.

I was excited to get the Heart of Oasis in CoC but they gimped it and removed all it's properties. It used to stave off hunger, which is a great feature not to have to carry so much food or have in an emergency but that is no more. Likewise the Compass has always been weak. It takes using two of them to be a decent protection of the properties it does. One alone is too weak and two at once is really hogging up valuable slots where you want Stamina or Weight Carrying Artifacts to use instead.

I enjoyed your story or moving between levels. The joy of Call of Chernobyl, as you know is the unpredictable nature of where you meet men and mutants and your ability to move around as slow or quickly as you please at your own risk.

* * * * *

I finally installed the 1 TB M2 SSD in my Laptop. I decided, after taking it apart to do so that it was a pain in the ass I didn't want to do twice so I went ahead and ordered another 8 GB SO-DIMM ( Laptop Memory ) to install in it, which will give me a total of 16 GB. So I'm waiting on that to arrive so I can put it all back together one time only. That means my SoC Game on my Laptop is still on hiatus.

Don't you mean 'Call of Chernobyl'?. Yes, that is one of the things I like. I've always liked exploring in ARPG games until I crave new things to explore. So, I use the main quest as a pointer for the next place I can explore.

Good to know for sure about those red Mercs. I've made sure to keep the distance each time I saw them. Afraid killing them would turn the Dead City Mercs yellow or worse.

Regarding your laptop: As I read it it sounds like your laptop is one of the models where access to the RAM and the M2 is hidden under the keyboard. Back in 2004-05 when I worked in a PC shop I've assembled at least 1000 labtops. Most were made so there were easy access to RAM and HDD but some were not so easy to take apart if one didn't know how they were constructed. One of the most important things is making sure to not mix up the screws as there are usually two different types of threading and the color of the screw is usually the only give away. If you mix them up you risk destroying the threading in a hole.

Reminds me of when we got a new model laptop in the shop. While I were assembling one my boss came out back and for some reason started assemble another. The way he got about things I could immediately see I would have to take it apart and assemble it myself when he went back to his desk. Luckily for him I kept an eye on him and managed at the last moment stopping him from destroying the laptop. He had started screwing a long screw into a place in the centre of the laptop. I stopped him and asked if he had checked what was on the other side. He turned the laptop upside down and found out he would have broken off a SO-DIMM if he had continued. He just laughed and said something I can't remember, put down the laptop and dissapeared back to his desk.

Very dissapointed at the "Curious Stashes". Only contains patches + either a bottle of vodka or a energy drink. As far as I can tell they are no different from the least valuable stashes one can get for finishing side quests.

Seems like they had a little trouble with the final quests. After searching the NPP and finding some papers I get two tasks. Found out I had to solve them in a specific order. A shame they haven't used that huge underground complex in Generators for something. Looks like I just need to finish "A Concrete Tomb".

Shadow of Chernobyl on a Laptop ( 1.0006 )

Overall the activated stashes in Call of Chernobyl suck. In the 1.3 version it was too many worn pistols and pistol ammo. 1.4 changed that to even more worthless Faction patches. The only good things you ever find in activated stashes are the Basic/Advanced/Expert Tools, Armors & Artifacts. You do get weapons too but it's fairly easy to get high end weapons on your own from looting without waiting for one to appear.

My 1.4 Loner Game was only 3 months in ( X-18 & X16 done but not X-19 yet ) when I took a break and started a Monolith Game where the story mode isn't applicable. However finishing the story mode is the lowest priority of what I'm doing. Basically I'm just living the life in the Zone and doing whatever I feel like each day. Probably more influenced by stash activations, letting them build up in certain levels then making a round trip through multiple levels to empty them all at once.

* * * * *

Yes, I noticed 10 dark screws and 1 light silver screw for my Laptop. The dark ones go in the outer holes while that light screw goes in the center just like you described. Can't wait to get my Memory soon. I went ahead and ordered 2 sticks of high performance Gaming Memory ( 2 X 8 GB PC 2400 ) so I'll yank out the ordinary value 8 GB Memory it came with once they both arrive. I'm anxious to get back to my Game.

Finished "A concrete Tomb", kind of an anti-climax.

Have taken a backup of the game and installed MLR as it should have a special story for the Monolith when doing Story Mode.

Edit: For some strange reason the vodka is protecting against Psi instead of removing radiation in MLR. Have changed it back to removing radiation. Flashlights aint worth writing home about.

------------------------

Just remembered something funny that happened: A few times I have tried shooting down some crows, just for the fun of it and as it's gives a bit of training shooting at moving targets. I have a difficult time hitting them as it's very difficult to see how far up they are and they fly in circles and change course now and then. Well, at one time when shooting at a chopper I took down a crow that happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time

What is "A concrete Tomb", I just haven't gotten that far in my 1.4 Game?

What is MLR again? I've got my SoC Game going on my Laptop and two unfinished CoC Games on my desktop. The 1.4 Loner Game at 3 months in and the current Monolith Game at 2 months(?) in. My 1.3 Game got almost 11 months in before it became so buggy I couldn't finish it.

* * * * *

Got the Laptop put together tonight. Newly added High Performance Gaming 1 TB NVMe SSD and High Performance Gaming 16 GB Memory. I took out the value 8 GB Memory it came with and put in two new sticks of 8 GB each. That's more than enough. Waiting on updates for Windows 10 to get back to my Game.

"A Concrete Tomb" is the name of the final mission which is actually split in two as one has to do a mission inbetween.

MLR is a addon/mod for CoC. PressurE told about it back on page 7.

Link to download site: http://www.moddb.com/mods/call-of-chernobyl/addons/mlr

Each faction has its own Quest line, lots of new weapons (how they look is debatable), lots of money but things are more expensive. Weapons on corpses are much more likely to be worn out. As far as I can see from the comments at moddb, it incorporates parts of at least two other mods. I have only played a bit as a Monolith but if the map is correct, some parts are closed to me though maybe they open up later on, who knows. Seems like a earn a salary each day but I'm pretty sure I also lost some money one morning for reasons to me unknown as I didn't manage to read the whole message before it dissapeared.

Seems MLR is more prone to CTD. Haven't checked the game log as it's a CTD without message on the screen so I don't expect to find anything useful.

If weapons are not too damaged on can still make some money on repairing them and selling them.

Medkits heals much less, as the kits can be used twice it's not as bad as it sounds.

------------

Can't wait to hear if you note any difference while playing after the upgrade. With the NVMe OS and programs should load faster. Loading of saves might be faster as it also depends on the game engine.

Shadow of Chernobyl on a Laptop ( 1.0006 )

I've pretty much stuck with the progress of changes that Team Epic themselves have done with their Game. I started with 1.2, moved to 1.3 and attempted to accomplish a year of playing 1.3 but fell just short of 11 months due to too many object saved that appeared to cause problems and exposed a limitation on the game engine. It got to the point where I had to keep dropping the quality of the graphics just to be able to leave the level I was in. It finally got to the point where I couldn't leave the level I was in without crashing.

1.4 was a major change I wasn't happy hearing about at first. Taking away the ability to have your gunsmith toolkits replenish and re-use them to do mass weapon repair on a large scale and sell them. I can't tell you how much time I spent hauling weapons and repairing them in the 1.3 version. When I started 1.4 I was upset this was changed but quickly realized the wisdom of it. I was now free of spending so much time doing what I had done before. Let's face it, being overloaded carrying massive amounts of loot and spending game hours or days repairing them to sell was not really fun game play. Removing that and instead expanding CoC to have more jobs and tasks for rewards was far, far better. Game play returned to being about travel and action. Not hauling and repairing.

Now I admit I haven't tried the 1.5 Beta. I've been told it's a lot harder and almost like CoC tried to be like a Team Epic version of Misery, which is funny since the Misery Design Team have embraced the work of Team Epic's Call of Chernobyl as their base for their new Call of Misery. I've never been a Misery fan. Everything brown, yellow and rust doesn't have much appeal to me. Perhaps you might want to give it a try.

* * * * *

Got back to my SoC 1.0006 Game last night on my upgraded Laptop. Left off in Yantar looting on the surface before getting ready to go to the X-16 Lab underground. So much loot everywhere in Yantar, I feel most people don't get it all. After all, there's no way you can get ALL the loot of of the X-16 underground in one trip. It really takes two trips. What I do is as soon as I escape, I usually go right back in before all the Zombies, Snorks and a Controller show up as replacement spawns in Yantar.

Well, the engine is strained in CoC 1.4.22 too but I don't think I have had crashes related to it. I've kept down the amount of stuff in my fixed stashes but there is at least a one second delay when opening the one in the Rostok Bar and the one in Dead City.

Sometimes for no apparent reason I get radiation poisoning (red warning) at places where I didn't the last time I were there. Note my armour and artefacts carried are the same. It also feels like my guns sometimes wears out faster (no intention of testing it.)

I got pretty tired of dead NPCs having lots of worn out weapons on them so I started collecting them and donating them to the traders. Much easier to find the ones with ammo which is the second or third best source of money, the other is mutant parts. Best source is Artefacts. Naturally one can take a companion and sell some of the less damaged weapons to them but they run out of money pretty fast. As I only used companions when forced to this was a no-go for me. Currently in CoC 1.4.22 I have 7 mill+ RU. BTW, I wonder how many people realize Beard on the Skatovsk pays a good price for artefacts?

What Misery goes, let those people who like that play it, it's not my cup of tea (or mug of coffee).

************

In MLR there are two NPCs guarding in the Monolith main base running forth and back right in front of the trader and mechanic. They are a real PITA as they push one away from the trader or mechanic while doing business. I solved it by moving them up to the Monolith thingy up in the theater. Luckily they stay there even when I leave the map.

************

Regarding X-16 in SoC. My way of doing it too. I made sure collect all loot and drop it in a few easy to find places. Returned ASAP after getting out and cleaned out the place.

So you have to remove the whole underside of it to get access to the innards. Looks nice and tidy in there

Here is a video by some guy about how to take apart and reassemble my Asus G73JH:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JbEJlm6PdY
As you can see I only have to remove a small cover on it to gain access the HDD, RAM and NIC.

Back when I assembled labtops I had to install Keyboard, CPU, RAM, HDD, Optical Drive and a few times the GPU, NIC and Cooling + assorted covers. Screws were just thrown into a singe bag so first thing was sorting the screws. Connecting the flat cable for the keyboard could be quite tricky on some models because of very little space and the connector on the mainboard breaks easily as it's made of flimsy plastic.

Yeah, I'm pretty happy with my purchase. It's harder and harder to find models with an optical drive, especially in the lower price range of the Gaming laptops and I've done all the upgrades I wanted to do. At first I had hesitation about wanting to wait for the 8th generation series Intel CPUs, especially with more cores but after reading this article I'm glad I didn't:

Is Intel's Coffee Lake Worth It for Gaming Laptops?
https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/intel-coffee-lake-gaming-performance

Just like desktops computers, it's really more important to get a good GPU over worrying if the CPU is the latest. However unlike a desktop, once you decide on your laptop, it's not an option to upgrade anything ( CPU or GPU ) unless it's basic stuff like I already did: memory, hard drive or a new M.2 SSD. Hopefully I won't ever have another reason to crack my laptop open again and play with the innards.

Yeah, internal optical drives in labtops are getting rare. Today you can even download the OS and install it using a USB stick. No optical drive means thinner and lighter labtop and more focus on making sure the cooling is optimal.

I still have hundreds of Games on CDs/DVDs that always aren't available on Steam or GoG. Plus hundreds of movies on DVD. I haven't made any effort or a desire to replace all my movies with Blu-Ray even though I am putting a Blu-ray drive in my new desktop build. I think old Games and Movies are just fine for the small screen of laptops without having to worry about having the highest resolution like on big screen TVs.

I have a Blu-ray drive in my labtop, made sure the model I ordered back then had one. Last year when I moved I bought a cheap 49" flat screen TV so I could see my movies on the TV. I use my labtop for this. I also have a Blu-ray drive in my PC which I originally build back in 2007 and have upgraded several times. I'm currently waiting on a Retail version of Win10 Pro so I can upgrade it again. Reason for the upgrade is a faulty PSU that have damaged the mainboard rendering it slightly unstable. So, I have a new mainboard and a new CPU and RAM laying in the waiting. That is the downside of the speed we get new tech, when things break there is a high risk having to buy more parts than anticipated.

PCDania~

I watched the video take-apart on your laptop. I attempted to find more on the specs but came across several versions over the time frame when it came out and continued to be sold with variations. So what exactly are the specs on your Asus and what upgrades to it have you done?

So you jumped on the Blu-Ray bandwagon pretty early...compared to me at least. I own two Blu-Rays at the moment. I'm already hearing people talk about how that's being replaced by HD or 4K or whatever it is called. Came across this opinion which explains things well:

If DVDs have completely replaced VHS, why hasn't Blu Ray Discs begun to replace DVDs?
https://www.quora.com/If-DVDs-have-completely-replaced-VHS-why-hasnt-Blu-Ray-Discs-begun-to-replace-DVDs

I actually bought a couple of used Asus external USB Blu-Ray Players on E-Bay last year or so. Unknown to me at the time is the huge pain in the ass difficulty of not getting the software with them to play Blu-Rays. I tried to find something on the internet but did not have any luck. That also may explain why Blu-Ray is not more common for other than big TVs with a dedicated player in the living room. Do you have any software to recommend?

In your case wouldn't it be easier just to get a dedicated Blu-Ray player now since they are so cheap? I mean if you have at least been doing this since 2007, I imagine you have way more Blu-rays over that time.

* * * * *

Thought I would get back to my SoC game after the Laptop upgrades, however life itself says hey you gotta do this other stuff instead.

There are at least 2 versions of that labtop. I know of a 1A version and a 2A version with different specs (CPU, RAM and HDD) and then those models are also different depending on the market they are meant for. As far as I remember, my model as version 2A (which is a little newer) comes with a DVD-Combi drive so no Blu-ray support.

Original specs for my Asus G73JH version 1A:

Win7 Ultimate 64-bit
CPU: i7-720QM (1.6-2.8Ghz)
GPU: Ati Mobility Radeon HD 5870
RAM: 6GB DDR3-1066
Storage: 500GB Seagate Hybrid HDD
Optical drive: Blu-ray ROM (Read Blue-Ray, Read/Write DVD)
Screen: 17" 1920*1080

I have upgraded to Win10 Pro 64-bit
Installed a second 500 GB HDD (from WD)

I already had a Blu-ray drive (Blu-ray ROM/DVD Burner) in my PC (back then everyone talked about Blu-ray being the next black so I bought one to be future proof. Cost only a little more than a DVD burner), reason it is in the labtop is it had one. I only buy movies on Blu-ray if the price is the same or lower than DVD. I have about 120 movies, about 20% are Blu-ray. Reason I go for Blu-ray (when price is same or lower) is they take up less space in my cabinet and they are way less likely to get scratched.

Unfortunately Microsoft does not support Blu-ray (think the excuse was something about royalties and codecs) so after trying out some freeware software which only gave me problems I ended up buying Corel WinDVD Pro which have worked flawlessly except for a minor hickup (fixed with a patch) when I upgraded to Win10 Pro.

Well, I could just get a Home Entertainment Center with Blu-ray support or build a HTPC but then my labtop would just sit there collecting dust as a backup for my PC.

Until I moved back in 2016 I had very little space so I watched my movies on my PC monitor. Reason I have a TV now is simply for watching my movies. My apartment is up under the roof in an old former station building so it's a bit difficult to furnish. I'm hoping some day to get an apartment in an apartment building so I can get a better sound system.

Have had a bad economy for many years as I got problems with my back in 1993 leading to me living on various forms of public support while fighting for getting accepted for Flexicurity. This I got in 2003 and finally landed a job under Flexicurity in 2007. In February 2017 I got a blood clot in my brain, I did return to my place of work but in December I had to go on sick leave caused by a mix of stress and the damage in my brain caused by the blood clot. According to my doc he thinkgs the it is the cognitive area of the brain that got most damaged. I had some problems with my eye sight in the first 3-4 weeks but fortunately that healed so I may still drive a car. Currently on sick leave I can just make ends meet. Luckily I have a little money in the bank.

Enough whining for now.

I like the styling and big vents of your Laptop. Seems like a wise choice that has lasted you a long time and you've gotten your money's worth. Asus makes quality products.

https://www.asus.com/us/Laptops/ROG-G73Jh/

Sorry to hear about your health problems. I'm glad you have found a happy place to be with your difficulties by playing PC Games. I enjoy PC Games because I can stay at home, have a lot of fun without spending a lot of money and are a good value for replayability. PC Games allow you to explore virtual worlds where you can engage in risky and dangerous activities but always do it in a safe environment that you can start or stop anytime.

Real Life is quite different. I know few people that I work with that play any PC Games, but those that do are mostly some Console ones and I've never been able to get anyone to play the Stalker Games. However people I've met through the internet, I have more in common with and can share many things no real person in my everyday life would understand. So in effect I've met more people around the world, exposed my self to more countries, cultures and made more friends with like minded interests that I hold in high value. I'm trying to get my friend to play Stalker on his new Laptop but he has two teenage sons that consume all his time. He's buying them Laptops ( they have Xbox ) and now they are both thrilled with the MMO Fortnite. He said this is the first time in many years they have both been playing together doing this. Now all their friends with Play-station & Xbox want Laptops. I jokingly said that a boy becomes a Man when he goes from Consoles to PCs.

That special air cooling system is one of the reasons I bougth that labtop. CPU and graphics produce a lot of heat but Asus made some very effective cooling that even is cooling most of the innards, the keyboard at most will feel warm. That means way less risk the labtop is killed by heat which back then was the most likely cause for a crashing or dead gaming labtop.

The other reasons is simply how it looks and that it's not a lightshow which is pretty common on gaming labtops. Instead there is white light under the keyboard and a discrete blue light at the edge of the screen pointing downwards, both of which can be disabled separately.

Consoles are a nice way of being able to play games (you only need a TV and an internet connection) but I prefer a computer. I do have a game (can't remember the name, bought when looking for something different to try out) that is ported from console to computer but its controls are unusable with keyboard and mouse. I bought a controller but I have given up learning how to use it. One thing is having to learn how to use the controller instead of keyboard and mouse, another is the ergonomics. I simply can't find a good way to hold that thing.

As we both know, the newer generations of CPUs and GPUs since yours use a lot less power and produce less heat as technology improves. Despite this I did buy a laptop cooler and use it at all times when I'm at home. Gotta keep the SSD cool for optimum performance.

It sounds like you feel the same way I do. I stayed clear of flashy and obnoxiously tricked out and colored Laptops that are decked out to appeal to teenagers. Mine is very subdued on the cover and I like the red lit keyboards and had no desire to go for the more expensive RGB lit keyboards.

If I had kids, I would probably buy them a Console when they're young and you don't want them to mess up a PC. However I would definitely want to wean them off that when they became young adults. Most colleges nowadays require Laptops for classes anyway. Lucky for me I have no kids and I don't have to send my cats to college. A Controller can be good for PC Games where you are driving but since I mainly play FPS Games, I'm quite content with a keyboard and mouse.

* * * * *

I'm going to get back to my SoC Game this weekend.
