---QUOTATION--- Oh, I see. I thought it was part of a machinegun of some kind. How does this upper assy improve firing and accuracy of the AR-15? ---END QUOTATION---
The Varminter has a 24" extra heavy barrel, 1/9 twist so i can get max velocity shooting lighter bullets (40-55 gr). The free float tube dissipates heat better and reduces grip pressure on the barrel. The lower I have has a two stage match trigger so that helps as well. The bipod is nice for target shooting. Its great for groundhogs or even coyotes, if you use a heavier bullet.
The long barrel and the lack of rails on the hand-guard make it impractical for tactical use. |

Yeah, but a heavier barrel means more weight. I guess you're not a weight Nazi like I am.
Is that free-floating barrel comfortable to handle without additions? I've never handled one, but they look like they would chew your palm up.
Are you able to find good deals on .223 in bulk? The price of ammo was my main consideration in going with the 5.45 rifle, and it looks like it's only going to go up.
BTW, good-looking A2. Looks like it has a rail for a Leupold scope or something. I'm hoping S&W comes out with a 5.45 version of the long rifle.
When you stop for refreshment, chuse some spring or rivulet if you can, and dispose your party so as not to be surprised, posting proper guards and centries at a due distance, and let a small party waylay the path you came in, lest the enemy should be pursuing.

Acolyte,

Yeah, its a little over 8 lbs, but I usually set up in a stationary spot with it. I wouldn't want to trudge around all day in the field with it.

the "knurled" portion of the tube isn't that rough, just enough to give you a positive grip with bare hands.

it depends these days. i have noticed that prices for milspec stuff (M193, M855) has dropped or at least stabilized in the past few months. Maybe due to the drawdown in Iraq, but with the surge in Afghanistan that will probably change soon. the high end stuff say from Federal, Hornady or Corbon is still priced at a premium. I'm looking at getting a 5.45 upper myself to take advantage of the lower cost ammo.

Yeah, its got a rail that screws onto the carry handle.

Does the S&W have "small size" take-down pins or is it like a Colt, with the "large size" pins? the only 5.45 conversions i've seen have 16" barrels.

I believe they are the large pins, but I haven't been around another M16 since my discharge. My M&P has the 16" barrel.
Getting the M&P was actually a pretty big decision, as I already have an Arsenal AK-104 style rifle chambered for 7.62x39, with 12 magazines and 1000+ rounds. But I wanted something light (with light ammo ) that I could take on long-distance trips, and my philosophy is to always have two like weapons in case of the catastrophic failure of one of them. So I have two handguns and two rifles.
I already have some BUIS, so the only thing left on my list are a couple of optics and that's it. I'd love to have an ACOG, but they cost more than I paid for the rifle, so I'll probably go with something in the Aimpoint M2 family.
