S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky FACTIONS

According to GSC's statement, players will be able to ally themselves with 8 factions.

Great feature if you ask me, specially compared to the "enemies trow grenades" thing, but I was thinking that adding a bit more depth to it would be great... things like:

Depending on what factions players ally themselves with they get certain benefits.... like...:

Unique skills: i.e: Players who join the Bandits faction get a "Steal" skill, a stealth skill like "run silent" or "hide in the shadows", and perhaps a skill to make their "weapons more silent or a "lock pick" skill. etc.

Other example could be joining the Scientists faction, where players get an "Inspection" skill, which allows them to find items other factions cannot (easily). They can also "mix artifacts" to make them more powerful, heal other players etc.

Merchants can buy items for less, also sell their stuff for more, and have skills that allow them to Repair weapons and armor etc.

Stalkers (players who decide not join any faction) get a "resistance bonus" for being more in touch with the wilderness, "temporally increased stamina" skill, and "anomaly detection" skill...

Military can call up an air strikes or perhaps helicopter support, they also get to upgrade their weapons and get them for free (from their base).

Mercenaries get a "increased weight resistance skill that allows them to carry more ammo and bigger weapons"... and so on...

New skills are unlocked and the current ones are increased as the players progresses in their faction's rank ladder...

That seems to me like a decent solution to the "lack of depth" problems and it will also make the game much more re playable and very different for each faction.

PS: THOSE SKILLS ARE JUST EXAMPLES, I could come up with many skills possibilities for the different factions but I would like to hear that the community and the devs think about it... and their ideas!

In a more simplified way, you could just get stats gains (like the ones from artifacts and armor) depending of which faction you join... but that just wouldn't be as fun as skills...

I don't think STALKER has RPG elements that are that extensive. Some of it sounds interesting, but some of it, to me, is pretty ludicrous.

Still, it is a good idea, but I doubt that it will be featured or implemented into the game.

EDIT: I would like to join the Mercs or the Military. Freedom I really like, but I've already joined them. Well, if they're in Clear Sky, I'm joining them on my second playthrough.

Well, Stalker is a hybrid between the two genres after all, and I think it is in the RPG aspect where stalker lacks the most. (in contrast to the FPS side of it).

Besides many FPShooters that don't have RPG elements contain that feature... enemy territory being one of them for example...

I also doubt that it will be featured or implemented into the game but it is a long way before 2008 and at this point anything, or almost anything can happen, specially those little things that will make the game more interesting.

I'd join freedom becasue I like what they represent. The only reason I didn't join them in SoC was becasue you lost access to the bar after with the duty being hostile towards you.

Don't be so sure Siro, I think a lot of it could work. Make each faction have skill/trait perks a la Fallout 2. With those perks for ranks come special abilities. Now, I'll give you like "artifact alchemy" like was a suggested scientist skill above doesn't make much sense, but maybe being able to squeeze more power out of an artifact, due to your knowledge of its inner workings as you advance. These make sense, can be easily implemented, and will make for a more enjoyable FP/RPG game. STALKER clear sky could be the start of a wonderful new RPG style franchise if they did something like this.

Just my 2 cents on the matter. I'm also a hardcore AD&Der, as well as a big time fan of World of Darkness and the Call of Cthulhu RPGs for PnP players. I'm a young guy with old school taste, so this is me bringing that knowledge to the table. Sometimes, mass market appeal makes a game less innovative, less fun, and more like work. Anyway. I totally agree with pureevil. For clear skies, add more RPG, keep the FPS side mostly the same (a better hud would be nice though).

I personally don't like the idea, albeit it has some good things in it, but in real life, would you magically gain a "Radiation Resistance" skill by not being a member of a group?

Or any other such skill for that matter with no actual teaching or special gear?

For that, there are the different faction's suits.

A Radiation resistance skill won't give stalkers 100% radiation resistance, only 5 to 10% additional resistance, depending on his rank. Stalker SoC ranks loners as well as faction members... so they can go up in the ladder as well... I thought about that since stalkers spend more time in the wilderness than faction members, therefore gaining some natural resistance due to their exposure to radiation... it is totally understandable I think... for most people...

You also forgot that those are just quick suggestions... of course it would require balance and not all of those suggestions really fit the whole theme... I am no game maker after all, but at least I am trying to help the devs get ideas to make the game better, rather than just complaining or being negative...

It is so funny when you say: "but in real life, would you magically gain a "Radiation Resistance" skill" like anomalies and artifacts or many other things from Stalker exist in real life.... come on, it is a fictional game, not a "real life simulator!".

Forgive me... I forgot that snorks, teleporters and genies for that matter exist in real life... so my suggestion is totally off... I am really sorry!

I guess that the "in game" radiation can affect real people as well.... hahahaha

Reality exists in the game to a point. Artifacts enhance your ability in the game world.

However, magically getting powers from being a member of a group would be totally out of place no matter how much you use the "lol, anomalies, snorks, mutants anomalies and u want reality???????rofl" argument.

I also haven't joined freedom, but I think they have their own merchant and quest like the ones you get from the Duty bar... can someone please confirm this?

Yes, it's true. And I think this is the wrong thread to be asking this.

Also, factions in the first STALKER game (the one currrently out) cannot (or with great difficulty) be joined. There are mods that allow you to join them, though. There's also a join mercs mod in addition to Join Freedom and Join Duty. The Mercs mod is pretty buggy, though and doesn't really give you anything beneficial.
