Rather than seeing special abilities, powers, and skills gained by joining a faction, I would much prefer differing game experiences depending on your faction.

Freedom: a very popular faction, with many interesting and deep NPCs. Maybe they could barter or have auctions rather than a trader. They should be more chaotic, maybe a fight or two could even break out (you stole my weed Dima!). With that chaos in mind, maybe it would be a more slowly moving plot line, and you might have to do some convincing to get your fellow anarchists off their vodka soaked floor and back into the zone.

Duty: Another popular faction. Strict heirarchy leads to mostly stiff NPCs, with a few exceptions. Duty could be fast and efficient, but require more commitment from it's stalkers (standing watch, patrolling, etc).

Military: A truly different take on the game. Rather than hunt artifacts, you hunt stalkers. You would have access to the best equipment, and could get quick transportation to any part of the zone. You would face moral dilemmas, (Should I follow quarantine procedure and kill the rookie who is only here to cure his sick sister?). Joining the military would also limit your interaction with other NPCs, unless you went crooked .

the list goes on and on.... bandits are sneaky and liars... Monolith religious nuts... mercs are shameless money-lovers etc....

Upon re-reading my post, It seems more like a mod than an expansion, but I prefer subtle changes in theme to establishing the skill and feat system that plagues rpg gameplay. (Not a call to arms to flamers, just my opinion!)

I would join GSC. The Gay Stalker Clan.

Roaming the zone in leather pants, wielding rainbow flags... All these tough men around... Guns, sweat, chillin' round the campfire...

We would cut the stupid chatter on the loudspeaker in the Bar and play The Village People, Diana Ross and The Pet Shop Boys.

Imagine a rookie camp in cordon where young GSC members would be trained by Big Daddy Wolf... Sid, the chubby bear...

I'm sure the GSC would make the zone a happy place.

Now seriously... having the ability to steal, to carry one more weapon, to find items or to resist something by your natural endurance ARE REAL LIFE abilities, THAT REAL PEOPLE HAVE!!!!! I mean, just an example, who can carry more... a big, strong mercenary, or a small scientists? IT TOTALLY MAKES SENSE OK!?

maybe scientists can get 5% radiation resistance by some new type of rare antiradiation drug that takes time to slowy of a few week work up that is given to the scientists,Spetsnaz and Military Stalkers because thay are most likey to need to add the help agnist radiation but its not all up as mercs and bandits are hired to get your artifacts and dater from your experiments.
of couse the main ways for scientist to make money is to A) work on the tests that you came to done( set of missions i.e. get x artifacts and lab equipment to a set area then you get the dater(some artifacts mabe made or trun rocks or diffent artifacts.) that you can sead back then you get payed.
B) sell artifacts to uther scientist.
as a scientist more stalkers will try to sell you artifacts and body parts.
if you need x artifact you can pay bar keep to get you one.

the scientist have probley train for years so that can go to the zone so most of them do some test's for money after thay have done ther own.

Ugh, I would not be able to take walking into the only bar in the Zone bar and hearing "Macho macho maaaaan! I wanna be, a macho maaaan!"

I would flip out.

Also, most factions in the Zone are Russian stereotypes. Like the Bandits are your typical trash criminals that hang out in the city, Military are your gung-ho typical bored Russian army guys, Duty are the old Red Army style Soviet guys, Freedom are the "new" Russians a bit like the students just out of college that are hippy-ish but retain their toughness, and lastly, possibly my favorite faction, the Mercs. These guys are Ukrainian/Russian assassins/private contractors that do their job, and love good wine and women. Cultured, yet cutthroat.

Interesting, that does make sense. So who are the scientists? The nerdy students?

Also, I thought Freedom was your favorite? Or do you just favor them opposed to Duty?

Now you're talking!

If you do this, I'll make you vice president of the GSC!
And don't be shy, honey. We'll treat you like the princess you are.

No rough stuff.
